Prayer Focus

For Mothers………….

As Mother’s Day approaches many of us

will celebrate it personally as a mother and all of us will remember our own mother whether she is still with us or

not. Let us lift up mothers across the world in prayer! Also remember in pray-

er the women who are facing decisions in regards to health decisions of their

aging mothers. And for those of us, let’s

be thankful for the loving, Christian

Moms who raised us and are now enjoy-

ing their heavenly homes! “”Lord,

you have been our dwelling place

in all generations.

Before the mountains were brought forth,

or ever you had formed

the earth and the world,

from everlasting to everlasting

you are God”

Psalm 90:1,2

A mother is a person who seeing there are only four pieces of pie for five people, promptly an-nounces she never did care for pie. - Tenneva Jordan My mother's menu consisted of two choices: Take it or leave it. - Buddy Hackett My mother had to send me to the movies with my birth certificate, so that I wouldn't have to pay the extra fifty cents that the adults had to pay. - Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Working mothers are guinea pigs in a scientific experiment to show that sleep is not necessary to human life. - Author Unknown

POTLUCK PRAYER CONNECTION

Saturday

June 2 at 9:00 AM

Have you ever attended a Prayer Connec-

tion? Perhaps you aren’t sure what happens

at a Prayer Connection and would be a bit

more comfortable in knowing what it is all

about? Of course, there is prayer in-

volved…..and of course, there is food in-

volved!

Each Prayer Connection focuses on a minis-

try of the Blue Church. In June we will focus

on the ministry of the Vacation Bible School.

Did you know that the majority of children

that attend the VBS are unsaved and/or are

from homes that do not attend church?

What a great opportunity to share the Lord

with children through Bible stories, crafts,

activities and yes, even snacks!

There is also prayer for each other. There is

a sense of peace and wellbeing in knowing

that in this group of women prayers are

being lifted up for each other and for the

ministry of the Blue. It will not be required of you to pray outloud and/or to share a

prayer request. It is our prayer that you will feel welcomed and comfortable in being

a part of this special morning.

Linda Hiorth hosts this event so if you have

any questions, please email or give her a call: [email protected] or 610-558-0330..

Nursery will be provided upon request but please request the nursery by Sunday, May

27 so that we will have time to find nursery

volunteers.

BOOK CORNER

With

Gabrille Contion

Were you able to read the April blueprint

article about the books the BC ladies are

reading? Blue Church ladies at home

and abroad were contacted and you

could see from the article the wide varie-

ty of books that are on the nightstands

ready to be picked up read. Come with

me to my book stack and see what I am

reading. Recently I finished Fifth Chinese Daughter by Jade Snow Wong, a fascinat-

ing autobiographical account of a Chinese

girl growing up in California in the 30s

and 40s. Jade Snow was raised by very

traditional Chinese parents who had be-

come Christians. She knew Bible stories

but also grew up with Chinese cultural

traditions and folk lore. As Jade Snow

grows and matures she struggles to “find

her place” in the American society as she

overcomes many obstacles on her path to

being a scholar and accomplished art-

ist. Published in 1950 this book is still

available and well worth reading. The Prodigal God by well-known author Tim

Keller takes the parable of the prodigal

son and contends that both sons were at

fault: one outwardly rebellious and the

elder son unforgiving, angry and self-

righteous. What did it cost for the young-

er son to return “home? What does it

cost for us to return “home”? The cross

of Christ. Notable chapter titles Redefin-

ing Sin, Redefining Lostness and Redefin-

ing Hope give you a glimpse into this very

rich book. Adrienne Arieff wrote The Sacred Thread, the story of surrogate

motherhood in the country of In-

dia. Adrienne and her husband

chose surrogacy after suffering heart

breaking miscarriages. The American

couple had no moral or ethical difficulties

with such a decision and the journey they

took is very well documented as they

traveled to India, and experienced the

landscape and culture first hand. Ms.

Arieff is Jewish and while she was in India

she met born again Christians who im-

pacted her life. This is not written from a

Christian viewpoint, obviously, and while I

did enjoy reading it, I was put off by Ms.

Arieff’s viewpoint that medical care and

life in India is so peaceful. She saw the

strolling cows as charming; we see them

as a consequence of misguided religions/

beliefs. Kisses from Katie: A Story of Re-lentless Love and Redemption by Katie

Davis takes you on a journey to Uganda

with 18 year old Katie. After high school

graduation Katie left her comfortable

home to live in Uganda, ministering to the

sick and poor. She has adopted at least 12

young girls and provided them a loving

home in spite of great adversity. Stepping

out of your comfort zone as a Christian

and seeking to make a difference in the

lives of others is the theme. It was so

inspiring and warrants an “I couldn’t put

it down” status. After reading of Katie’s

normal day your work load won’t seem so

burdensome! Consider giving this book to

a graduating senior girl.

What’s So Amazing About Grace? by Philip

Yancey has been read by many of you, no doubt, and I am almost finished with it. Mr.

Yancey beautifully integrates scripture with current stories of forgiveness and how we

are all experiencing God’s grace at every turn. Notable quote: “We can do nothing to

gain more of God’s love, we can do nothing

to make God love us less.” My short sen-

tences on this book do not do it jus-

tice. Please read it for yourself and be

blessed. This book has encouraged me to go back and re-read Romans. Hopefully, for

the next newsletter I will be exploring some parenting books. Until then I remain, your

book loving friend. Gabrielle Contino

MOM’S

AT THE BLUE

( F oc us ed o n m o ms o f yo un g c h i l d re n…

b u t a l l m o ms a re w e lc o me d ! )

In March the Mom’s Group discussed the topic “School Choices” which was probably one of my favorite meetings so far. Deb

Schaible, Denise Peters (Private Christian School), Lori Garrity, Marybeth Nobbs (Public School), Madelyn Land and Gabrielle Contino (Home Schooling) each opened up their hearts and talked about how they made their decision. They answered why they chose the school situation they did,

how it deepened their child’s walk with the Lord, challenges they faced with the schooling, if any, and reflected back on what they would do the same/different. They each spoke honestly and had many touching stories of their children’s journey through school. Although the school set-

tings were different, there were some simi-lar themes between them such as: 1) Seek God in your decision-abundant

prayer! 2) Know your child well. 3) Critical thinking is a vastly important

quality to develop in your child.

4) Who their friends are is critical in any school setting.

Thank you so much to the moms who cared to share! Rebecca Fiorentino

Let’s Get Acquainted with …

Kathy Fridy

“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: REJOICE!” …Phi.4:4

Hi Ladies,

I grew up in the Roxborough/Manayunk area with a loving family: Mom , who was

born in Italy, was Roman Catholic; my dad, from Georgia was a Southern Baptist; and

my big sister, GloriaJean, whom I love dearly, and most of you have met at several

retreats.

GloriaJean and I were sent to church on Sundays, and “made” our Communion and Confirmation in the Catholic

Church. My family left the Catholic Church and joined the Episcopal Church when I was eleven. As long as I went to

church…any church …mom was happy; and I did go to many different churches throughout my teenage years. At 19, I

became engaged to a young Jewish man; I studied Judaism and converted to his religion. After our divorce, I floun-

dered around from church-to-church until Jesus led me to The Blue Church where I accepted Him as my Lord and Savior

in 1996, and thankfully became a part of the Blue Church family. Today, I believe that God provided that path to get

me to actually read the Bible and begin my walk with Him. I must admit, I made many wrong choices before I came to

know the Lord, but He was faithful even before I knew Him and always showed me a way to correct my path, always

leading me closer to Him. When I look back, and see how many times I leaned on Jesus, I am surprised that it took me

so long to let go of my counterfeit Gods and just follow Him! My first women’s retreat with the ladies of the Blue

Church gave me Psalm 91…we were asked to “personalize” it - when I did, it became so real to me and became ‘my’

scripture for refuge and strength when I felt alone and lost.

On my first mission trip – to Ecuador in 2002 for the dedication of the Awa Pit translation of the New Testament, the

Lord opened my heart to missions. This experience gave me a fresh and overwhelming feeling of gratitude for all God

has provided for me, and a desire to share His Word and promises with others that they too might know Him. I serve

on the Missions Council at the Blue and enjoy getting to know our missionaries.

I’ve been an executive assistant to CEOs most of my working career. For the past 9 years I’ve been with Project Man-

agement Institute; 8 of those years as assistant to a dynamic CEO. I was able to travel internationally in that position

and met people from all over the world. I am now in the PR department providing speakers for various events. When

I’m not in the office, I spend most of my time with family & friends and Annie (my cat), and also serve as President, of

my Condo Association. I enjoy spending time with my grandchildren and close friends. I love flowers (although I’m not

a gardener), dark chocolate (yum), and trying new recipes – careful…I just might try one out on you if you come for a

meal J.

God’s blessings in my life are nothing short of amazing. He has brought me through divorce, a violent marriage, and He

sustained me after losing all my material possessions in a fire. He has given me the opportunity to travel, both on busi-

ness trips and on mission trips, to places I never would have dreamed I’d see - giving me the privilege to enjoy His crea-

tion beyond my backyard. He gave me two beautiful children – a son and a daughter – who bring such joy to my life,

and grandchildren who hold a special place in my heart (that’s my little Gigi in the photo with me). But most amazing

is that He has forgiven all my sins and has called me His child! What peace this has brought into my life. A peace that

truly transcends all understanding ….[Phi.4:4-7]

2012 WOMEN’S RETREAT

It was a very special weekend this year for the women who attended the Wom-en’s Retreat in March in Ocean City, NJ. Paula Harris brought a challenging se-ries of sessions on faith. Using the sto-

ry of the woman who touched the hem of Jesus’s garment, she shared with us how we are all ‘given a measure of

faith’ and how our faith grows as we exercise it on a daily basis. Although the woman was considered an out-cast to others, she was determined to get near to Jesus

because she had faith that she need only to touch his

garment and he would heal her of the disease that she had had for so many years. Paula shared a very clear gospel message on Saturday night which touched the hearts of three women who ac-cepted Christ as their Savior. Praise the Lord! Let’s keep them in prayer as they continue on their faith jour-

ney!

2013

WOMEN’S RETREAT

April 5—7

Looking toward 2013, …... The location (Port-O-Call in Ocean

City, NJ) and prices are remaining the same! We are looking forward to having Sheryl Vasso and Cammy Tidwell join us again. Sheryl and Cammy spoke at the One Day Retreat in October 2011 at the Blue.

In April the topic will be “The Power of Words”. Sheryl & Cammy describe this weekend topic: “Words matter. With over 500,000 words in the English lan-guage, great is the potential to utter sayings that could wound another. Proverbs 10:19 says, "Where words are many, sin is not absent" Gossip, slander, malice, grumbling and complaining, these are examples of ways we can wound others with what we say. So too, ample opportunity exists for us to utter sayings that woo the heart of another. Another Proverb tells us the "right word at the right time is like a custom made piece of jewelry". (25;11) Words of love, words that are kind, words that offer patience and affirmation reflect a humble and understanding heart. In this retreat, we will look at biblical ways to transform our speech so we build up with our speech instead of tearing down with our tongues.” Once again we are offering the opportunity of spreading your payments over the year so that it is not so overwhelm-

ing at the time of the retreat. It is your choice on how much you want to pay and how often. Checks should be payable to The Blue Church but mailed to Jean Rines, 287 Stanton Count, Glen Mills PA 19342. If you would like to register, please either email Jean ([email protected]) with your name, address, roommate re-quest and contact info or you may

pick up a registration form from the back lobby. Join us in 2013!!

13 People were bringing little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but the disciples rebuked them. 14 When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said

to them, Let the little children come to me, and do not

hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 15 Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.

Mark 10:13-15 NIV

Children are a wonderful blessing from God and this is true whether you’re a mom, a sister, a friend or even a teacher. God continuously calls us (yes us adults) to become like children in order to see what our years of experience have tried to cover. Are you willing to open your eyes and see; see what God is doing in the lives of

His children? And most importantly are you ready to be

a part of it?

Every summer, we hold a Vacation Bible School here at the Blue. Our goal during this one week, 3 hour a day summer opportunity is simple: share the gospel of Je-

sus. Through the use of music, crafts, games and our Bible stories, children learn valuable lessons about Je-sus in reference to our theme for the summer. This year

we will be heading to the National Park!

How can you be involved?

1.) Pray- Pray for the children and families coming to our VBS. Pray for our staff and their commitment to be

here. Pray for this ministry in general!

2.) Contribute- Craft and Snack donations will be coming soon! Would you be willing to purchase or provide these

items?

HOME MISSIONS

AT THE BLUE ..

Vacation Bible School

3.) Serve- VBS is a 3 hour ministry for one week. You can serve in any of our areas-music, games, crafts, Bi-

ble teaching or guides. Can’t make it the whole week?

Don’t worry! We’d love to have you any time you are

available!

As we see in Mark Chapter 10, Jesus wants the little children to come to Him. He wants them to run into His open arms. Will you be like the disciples or are you run-

ning just as fast as the children to get there?

16 And he took the children in his arms, placed his hands

on them and blessed them.
