Marina, is a Primary Care Develop-ment Manager based at Stockport Primary Care. She has been a mentee on the scheme for 7 months.

What was your experience of mentoring before you joined the scheme?

I had been assigned to a Mentor whist studying for my Degree; this was not a posi-tive experience. My Mentor was not accessible and strug-gled to construct a sentence without the words ‘if I were you.’

When did you first become aware of the North West Mentoring Scheme and what were your expectations?

A friend from work who had recently Graduated from the North West General Management Scheme suggested it to me.

How would you describe your first session with your mentor?

We set up an agreement which was a means by which I got what I needed out of the sessions and I could see progression. We both agreed on a structure to the meetings and agreed places to meet. Before the meeting she asked me to draw a time line of my career to date which was to include both high points as well as low points, she also asked me to pull together an up to date CV. We worked through

these pieces of work whilst she asked me what had constituted to my career and also direction within the NHS.

How has being in a mentoring relationship helped you develop further?

It has enabled to see a more rounded view of the world (well the NHS largely).

What piece of advice would you give to individuals who were uncertain about joining the scheme?

This is a fantastic scheme to be part of. It opens your eyes to the real challenges out there and enables you to real-ise your potential. The

Scheme also allows you to explore ave-nues you would probably never even have dreamed of exploring.

What was your most enjoyable experience? The diagnostic tools used by my mentor, it was quite scary the way I was almost personality/trait tested, 100% accurate. It helped me to understand my own behaviour and other colleagues behaviour and techniques by which to ensure I got what I needed out of discussions and they also got what they needed, It has definitely allowed me to look at they way I handle situations and relationships within my work environment.

European Mentoring and Coaching Council UK Conference, 25th – 26th March 2008, Ashridge Business School

The team had an excellent fact finding visit to this years conference and had the opportunity to hear from key Mentoring and Coaching figures on a range of interesting subjects including: Yvonne Coghill, National Programme Lead for the Breaking Through Project, and her experience of being mentored, which she described as one of the most productive relationships of her life.

Members of the EMCC gave an update on the quality standards journey and a national picture on where coaching and mentoring standards are heading. DCI Jacqueline Keddy, Organisational Development Manager, Metropolitan Police, gave her account of the development of a cross-organisational coaching scheme within the Metropolitan Police Force Leadership Academy and provided us with a really useful quote

“Simplexity - The art of making complex things simple identifying what works and doing more of it.”

David Clutterbuck ran a session looking at virtual mentoring and explored opportunities for multi media mentoring which the scheme will be focussing efforts on over the coming months. Alex Linley, author of Average to A+ closed the event with an inspirational presentation on positive psychology. He advised that people are more perceptive, engaged and learn better when receiving positivity and experiencing positive emotion.

Quote of the Month “For every minute you are angry, you lose 60 seconds of happiness”

What is your life motto?

Per Ardua Ad Astra (I’ll be honest I didn’t have one, well not until today, I am going to name drop and say my colleagues Ben and Joan have suggested this to me, google tells me it means to the stars without avail!). The full interview will be available online soon.
