Laughter is our theme this month.Perhaps the one “spiritual disci-pline” that we share across ourvaried theological perspectives asUnitarian is the capacity to liveconnected to our ability to laugh.

Laugh at ourselves; find the irony;when “we can laugh or we cancry”, choose to salvage somelaughter. Never to harm, but atool of discovery and a tool to cre-ate.

After the Service: An all KUFpotluck – yes – a REAL pot-luck. Easter Sunday is a “familytime” and for many, KUF IS ourfamily in Kingston. Another moment of celebration is upon us!It’s hard to imagine, but we managed to move toour new building in early December and turned topainting and settling in mode. Everyone at KUFhas contributed to the journey of growth and expec-tation that has followed KUF in our many stoppingpoints in Kingston for 58 years. April 15th at 2 pmwe will welcome the community to tour our newhome and at 3pm we will gather in the Main Hall fora Celebration of our new building. We’ll continuewith cake and refreshments. Please take a post-card invitation and invite someone to join you atthe celebration.

If you are on Facebook, please “like’ theKUF Facebook page and “share” the invitation tothe Open House with your Facebook “friends”.There is also a discussion group for KUF membersand we have a presence on Google+. What is your favorite place in our new building? What do you enjoy in our expanded space? Liketables for coffee hour! What creativity has beeninspired by the possibilities? The elevator brokeand it took about four days to fix. What we realizedwas how many people enjoy the whole buildingbecause of our accessibility (they simply couldn’tgo to the downstairs at 214 or upstairs). Parkingis available for programs at any time and eldersand toddlers don’t have to risk running acrossConcession Street. We have yoga, Soul Matterssmall groups, drop-in Tech mentoring (a few morein April) and drop-in office hours Thursday noon –1:30 – or call for an appointment. Are you finding a place for your interests and

“Unitarian curiosity” at KUF? Coffee house eve-nings are in the planning; a social action e-newslet-ter is underway; we’re exploring our Facebook andsocial media presence; monthly soup lunches afterservices are in place. Each one of these initiativesis a part of the creativity, involvement energy, and

“settling in to our new home” that feels right in syncwith the spring planting and growing season!

Ideas link individuals, KUF Committees, and theBoard in a very dynamic community of engagedvolunteers. Shared Ministry = sharing yourtalents and taking an active role. A Shared

Ministry bulletin board is in the works – tasksneeded and skills offered. Each spring and fall I offer an Adult Religiousexploration class. Watch the weekly Mini-links forthe class description. We’ve had a good responseto the five Wednesday 5-7 pm time – April 4-May9. I love the opportunity to use one of the manyUU curriculums with a group of KUFers who “godeeper”, use our sharp minds to explore importantquestions – and equally explore our vulnerableheart questions of human longing. Hard to explain

– but you’ll know if you want to enter into such aUnitarian learning community of engaged explora-tion. Please contact me to register. I read a description of “inquiry-based – or activelearning”. The student identifies their own ques-tion or challenge and explores with others whoexpand the possibilities of inquiry through diversecommunity. Creative engagement generates moreinquiry and exploration and action follows, as thelearner is ready. What caught my attention wasnot the novelty of the idea, but how closely itresembles what I understand to be the “gestalt” ofall that we are as KUF. Whether from the ServiceWeavers, general conversation, or community re-sponse – ideas for Sunday Services come from thequestions and hopes in our lives. Likewise oursocial issues arise from our concerns and ourvision for the common good. Yes, some peoplelean more toward social action or spirituality orintellect. And some prefer to attend to those inter-ests in a closed defined sphere. What we havealways been as Unitarians is an inquiry basedactive lifelong learning community – interdisciplin-ary and interspersed with fun and fellowship. Or,as our banner says, “where minds and friendsmeet”. I’m pondering how to “ask the questions”in a new way that will make this wonderful activelearning community of all ages develop in a moretransparent way. If you lean toward “inquiry-basedactive Unitarian” style and want to help gather thequestions – please let me know. For mother’s andfather’s day we again invite such involvement.See you at KUF this month!

President’s Board ReportBy Cindy Harvey

During the Board and Leader Retreat inFebruary, Liz James used a phrase that I havebeen continually thinking of in many parts of mylife: “Walls that speak.”

``Walls that speak`` refers to what our wallshave to say about us without people around. Doour KUF walls say what we want them to say aboutus and about Unitarianism? Do we reflect ourprincipals in our walls? Are our walls inclusive ofall? Do they actually talk for us? I am not sure Ihave the answers.

I have since looked at the walls of my class-room at school where my grade 7 and 8 studentsand I live so much of our days together. They arecovered with art and student work, with little of me.I think this is what I want my school walls to say –that the students are more important than theteacher and whatever work they complete is wor-thy of a wall space. One poster that I do keep upfrom year to year says, “What is popular is notalways right. What is right is not always popular.” Ihope that this message will lead them to stand upagainst the pressures of growing up to live betterlives.

Then I felt I needed to have a look at thewalls in my home. Do they speak of my family andwhat we would say? This was actually fun and a biteye opening. I am not sure I have truly looked atmy walls in a long time. I saw lots of colour, which

seems to speak for me, and some great memories. Then I saw some cobwebs…. and walls that mayhave said something about 10 years ago. I thinkthat my spring cleaning may include my walls thisyear. I wonder what they will say?

Some of the highlights from the March Boardmeeting are as follows:

· A new social media policy was developedby the communication committee

· A New Terms of Reference for the buildingcommittee was passed

· A new Fundraising Coordinator role wascreated with Valerie Colgan agreeing to fillthis role

· Congratulations to Brian Hetherington, whobecame a new member

· The social action committee will be publish-ing a newsletter for all those interested

With the AGM fast approaching in May, thenominating committee will be busy looking forcandidates to fill the necessary positions for nextyear. This is an amazing way to be involved in KUFand to know how complex, but exciting, our opera-tions have become. If you are approached or wishto nominate yourself, please consider becomingpart of the Board.

Have a wonderful month and let me knowabout speaking walls.

Greetings from REShawn Cox

On April 1, the younger children will be takinga look at Arthur Lismer,“The boy with the restlesspencil.” The older children will be discussing rightand wrong and examining the grey area betweenright and wrong. On April 8, to celebrate Easter, we will bemove outside for an activity for all ages. Let’shope for nice weather on that day! On April 15, we will hear the story “Tiamet’sTears”, which we’ll be performing at the end ofthe month. We’ll be casting the roles and startingrehearsal. On April 22, we will continue rehearsing andsort out the final details for our performance. On April 29, KUF will hold an inter-generation-al service where “Tiamet’s Tears” will be per-formed. Thank you and see you on Sunday.

A Message to My Mother

Every May, we celebrate Mother’s Day atKUF. This year, through words and music, we planto weave together a service that pays tribute to theimportant role that our mothers have played in ourlives. We invite all girls and women who would liketo do so to write a letter to their mother. The bond between mother and daughter is asunique as the two females that form it. A womancan learn many lessons from her mother as shegoes through life – how to apply make up, how to

deal with the challenges that life can throw at you,how to sew, how to grow old gracefully, how notto behave under pressure, how to let go. Whether your mother will be attending the

Mother’s Day service at KUF, lives ata great distance or has passed on,

there may be a message that you would send her,if you had the chance. What questions would youask? What words of gratitude would you express? What frustrations or recriminations would you hurlat her? How has your life been marked by thewoman who gave you birth? All responses willremain entirely confidential. They will be woventogether to create a tapestry of the many faces ofmotherhood, that unique institution that has beenso reviled and so revered. Please send all submissions to Anne [email protected] or put them in the boxmarked “A Message to My Mother” at the back ofthe Main Hall. Father’s Day request in nextmonth’s KUFLinks.

KUF Paddle the Rideau August 10 – 18 2012 –The Excitement Is Building!by Rick Hatton

We are all very proud of the impressive workundertaken so far in our new Fellowship building. But there is still much to do to complete ourplanned renovations and improvements. You canhelp us to take another step toward achieving thisgoal by supporting our KUF “Paddle the Rideau”project, dedicated to raising funds specifically fortwo washrooms upstairs and a handicapped acces-sible washroom and a child nursery on the mainfloor. There are still spots available to participateas a paddler (we need more!) or as a member ofour Logistics Support Team. The interest list isavailable next to the "Paddle the Rideau" infoboard at the back of the Worship Space.

This is the year of the 180th Anniversary ofthe completion of the Rideau Canal system, ateam of determined and hearty participants fromKUF will paddle canoes and kayaks along thelength of the Rideau Canal from Kingston to Otta-wa, from 10-18 August 2012, camping along theway.  The Rideau Waterway, located in our ownbackyard, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site thatis both rich in natural beauty and steeped in histo-ry.

We got our project off to an excellent start byholding our first very successful group meeting onSunday, January 29. We currently have 12 dedi-cated paddlers signed up and 10 members who

will join our amazing Logistics Support Team.Much of the planning has already been complet-ed, and our nine-day trip itinerary has beenpronounced excellent by two noted Rideau ex-

perts. You can check out the informa-

tion poster at the back of the Worship Space and, hopefully soon, on the KUF website.

The excitement and enthusiasm are build-ing, and several KUF paddlers have started exer-cising regularly to get in shape for our expedition –perhaps you have already noticed? Our LogisticsSupport Team met on Sunday, March 11 to start toplan and coordinate the support for our intrepidpaddlers. Commencing in May, our paddlers willundertake some canoe and kayak skills training.

Our paddlers and supporters are planningto raise money through a Pledge Campaign, nowbeing coordinated by Bob Hotrum. The money willbe used to complete one or more priority KUFrenovation projects. One of our primary goals inour paddle fundraising is to create interest beyondKUF – we think paddling from Kingston to Ottawais a bold undertaking!

Would you help us to get the word out?Would there be people at your workplace, school, gymnasium, clubs and other locations who wouldlikely make a donation if they knew more about ouramazing project? If you check with Rick, you canborrow the large display poster to help explain thetrip to others. We also need the support of our ownKUF Members. Please give generously to ourpaddlers and supporters, who will have pledgeforms on hand and can accept cash or cheques(payable to Kingston Unitarian Fellowship Attn:Paddle the Rideau). We will issue tax receipts fordonations of $20 or over.  For further information about how you can par-ticipate, contact Rick Hatton [email protected] or by phone. For infor-mation about the Financial Campaign or how todonate, contact Bob Hotrum [email protected] or by phone. We needand welcome your support.

As members of KUF we are a liberal religiousfellowship that seeks to promote Unitarian valuesthrough social action. Our members are deeply in-volved in social justice issues at the local, national, and international levels, for the relief of:

· poverty and economic injustice· environmental degradation· breaches of peace, security and the democrat-

ic processand many other issues.

In order to further develop opportunities formembers of KUF to express their Unitarian religious, humanistic, and spiritual values, we are planning toproduce a monthly KUF Social Justice Newsletter tobe distributed monthly by email.
