E-bikes on Campus

RideKC Bike dropped off the first group of 5 e-bikes in the UMKC Health Sciences District campus. The bikes were left at 2413 Charlotte St, Kansas City, MO 64108 near the UMKC Clinical Training Facility. We have hubs in the UMKC Health Sciences District campus which means riders can now pick up an e-bike downtown and return it to any one of those hubs that shows on the map. Once they get to a hub they just lock to the bike rack and submit an end photo through the app. UMKC Health Sciences District faculty, staff and students can get started by downloading the Drop Mobility app and creating an account. The first e-bike ride is free!

The thing is, suicide is preventable. Today, the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) released the 2019 Application and Program Guidance for the NHSC Scholarship Program.

The NHSC Scholarship Program provides scholarships to health profession students pursuing careers as primary care providers in exchange for their commitment to serve in high-need, underserved communities. The scholarship includes tax-free payment of tuition,

required fees, other reasonable educational costs, and a taxable monthly living stipend.

After completion of graduation/training, recipients fulfill their service commitment at one of more than 16,000 NHSC-approved sites throughout the nation and its territories. Each scholar serves for a minimum of two years and receives one year of financial support (up to four years) for each year of service at an NHSC-approved site found on the Health Workforce Connector.

Eligibility

Eligibility includes:

1. U.S. Citizen (either U.S. born or naturalized) or U.S. National

2. Enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a full-time student

TMC Volunteer Opportunity

The TMC Social Determinants of Health project is seeking interested student volunteers to participate in this quality improvement project. The project plans to positively impact our patients and community by providing helpful resources regarding transportation, food and housing. Volunteers would interact with patients to provide resource education and follow

up with patients by phone. It is estimated that it would require 3-5 hours per week for volunteers, however the volunteer time is flexible. Interested students should contact Dr.

Opportunity Johns Hopkins Adult Reconstruction Research Fellowship

The Division of Adult Reconstruction of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at

Johns Hopkins University invites all qualified, interested, and motivated individuals

to apply for a clinical research assistant position.

This will be a 1 or 2 year salaried position that will begin on July 1, 2019. This research

assistant position provides a great opportunity to work with distinguished faculty in the field

of adult reconstructive surgery. The short term goal is to improve the chances of the

applicant matching into an Orthopedic residency and getting the fundamental knowledge of

latest research techniques while the long-term goal is to develop skill sets to become a

clinician-scientist. At completion of this position, the researcher is expected to have the

knowledge of all aspects of conducting a clinical study from formulating a hypothesis,

collecting and analyzing data to writing manuscripts and presenting their research.

The experience involves assisting in the study design, gathering and analyzing data,

preparing reports, posters, and oral presentations, as well as preparing manuscripts for

publication in peer-reviewed journals. There is an opportunity of attending and participating

in oral and posters presentations at regional, and national meetings. Previous researchers

have published multiple articles in peer-reviewed journals and have presented at Regional

(Maryland Orthopedics Association Meeting) and National conferences (AAOS

meeting). The researcher will also have the opportunity to attend regular research

meetings, and gain exposure to Hopkins and visiting faculty members during Grand

Rounds.

This position may provide the opportunity to participate in a one-week surgical mission trip.

Several members of the Orthopaedic Surgery Department at Johns Hopkins are involved

with Operation Walk Maryland. This is an organization that provides hip and knee

replacements to patients in developing countries. Previous research assistants have

participated in these missions by conducting research projects and assisting in the

operating room.

Applicant’s requirements:

Third year medical students, medical school graduates, and foreign medical graduates

seeking knowledge of the fundamental aspects of research are welcome to apply.

Job Responsibilities:

· Assist in the development and conduct of research protocols regarding retrospective and prospective studies with respect to total joint arthroplasty.

· Prepare and submit projects to IRBs for necessary approval

· Prepare manuscripts, textbook chapters, posters, presentations, and educational videos.

· Participate in research meetings, seminars, journal clubs, symposia, and professional society meetings.

· Assist in informed consent process and/or complete informed consent process as necessary for assigned studies.

· Complete data entry of compiled data and extract abstracts data from medical records.

· Facilitate patient interaction to assist in the conduct of research protocols.

· Administer various research surveys in accordance with research study requirements.

· Provide research study education to participants as part of a study protocol.

Program Description

This research opportunity is with the Department of Orthopedics Surgery in the Division of

Adult Reconstruction, at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. According to US

News and World Report, the Johns Hopkins Medical School is ranked #2 and the

Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Johns Hopkins is ranked #10 nationally. The Adult

Reconstruction Division is growing its research infrastructure, and this position will provide

an excellent opportunity for a motivated individual. Research will be primarily clinical in hip

and knee replacement surgery as well as with systematic program development. There will

be opportunities to collaborate with the Johns Hopkins Biomedical Engineering department

and work with our biomechanics lab.

Visa requirements:

The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine does not sponsor working visas.

Opportunity Wenner Scholar Infectious Diseases Summer Program

We are pleased to announce that applications are open for the 10th year of the H.E. Wenner Scholar Program in Infectious Diseases. There is a single position each summer (8-10 weeks laboratory-based research) through the Division of Infectious Disease at Children's Mercy Hospital. The position is partially funded via an endowment from the family of the late Dr. Herbert A. Wenner, a seminal researcher in polio epidemiology and vaccine development and former Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Children's Mercy Hospital. The program is overseen by Rangaraj Selvarangan BVSc., Ph.D., D(ABMM) and Dr. Christopher Harrison, Professor of Pediatrics and Director of Infectious Diseases Research; with assistance from Douglas Swanson MD, Jennifer Schuster MD, and other ID faculty depending on the project for any given summer. Selected members of this mentor group oversee the summer project and assist the student in the development of a project which to

be completed in the 8-10 week time frame. There are also two PhDs in the laboratory who provide day-to-day guidance and support for the student while performing the chosen lab-based project. In addition, the student can be paired with an ID faculty clinician (a clinical mentor during the rotation) potentially shadowing this mentor on clinical rounds for several half days during the summer. The start and finish date are flexible and can be arranged with the student's schedule in mind. All students who have completed at least their first year of medical school are invited to apply. The student would work in Infectious Diseases Research Laboratory, have specific didactic assignments relative to the research project, be invited to attend presentations at monthly research rounds, and attend the weekly ID clinical case conference. Ultimately authorship on an abstract for local, regional or national presentation is a goal as a final scholarly product of the student’s experience. Further, the student will craft a report on the summer experience which is sent to the Wenner family. Dr. Harrison will work with the student on the family report. Simulation Interest Group and Surgical Society

If you're looking for a fun way to compete against your friends and learn about laparoscopic surgery then mark your calendars for April 10th! Simulation Interest Group and Surgical Society are having a laparoscopic surgery simulator event to see who has what it takes to be a skilled laparoscopic surgeon! We will also have other surgical fundamentals like suturing and knot tying at the event. There will be free food as usual AND prizes to the winners of the simulator.

Policy for In the Know Announcement Submissions

1) All flyer/image submissions must be in JPG format (if the announcement is a

flyer). PDF and Word documents must be converted to JPG before being emailed

to shahmohammadin@umkc.edu. A TEXT summary of the information in the

flyer must also be included along with the flyer. This is to ensure that our In

the Know emails are ADA compliant and readable by the visually impaired.

2) If the announcement is a text only announcement, please include it in the body

of your email. Please use black font only and include a title for your

announcement such as “Emergency Medicine Interest Group”. Make sure to

include a contact person and email.

3) If an announcement includes incorrect information (such as an incorrect date or

time), and that week’s In the Know has already been sent out, a revision for your

specific announcement will not be sent out to the school. The only time a

correction email will be sent out is if the error is on the part of Student Affairs

(mistyped or forgot to include an announcement). Submissions which do not meet

the requirements will be returned to sender requesting the appropriate edits. The

announcement may then be resubmitted to shahmohammadin@umkc.edu for

inclusion in the In the Know.
