April 2015
Brothers,
After 9 wonderful months as Grand Knight, I can look back with satisfaction as many wonderful things that
have been done by the members of Our Council – yours and mine. Being involved in more activities has given me the
opportunity to get to know more of you, and that is a good thing. A big part of being a Knight for me is relationship,
just as it is for any church, community group, family, or friendship. And relationships are living things that need T.A.P.
– time, attention, and presence.
In a way those three things are all related. You can’t tend a garden without giving attention to the growing
plants, and that takes time, and it requires being present. This also applies to marriages, raising children, and every
other relationship. Through shared experiences, I have been enriched by stronger relationships with many of you, but
my wish is that you would all have that same satisfaction. The best way to gain that sense of reward is by getting
involved. With elections coming in May, you have the opportunity to deepen your involvement by running for, or ac-
cepting nomination for, an office.1
Speaking of service, many thanks to all the wonderful volunteers who fed the hungry during March.
We had a great breakfast followed by two terrific Lenten Fish Fries. It is so gratifying to see the willing hearts and
hands that pitch in, often without even being asked. Hundreds of our St. Patrick family were fed and given a chance
to socialize after Mass or before attending Stations of the Cross. It was also very nice to see those who attended and
shake hands, say hello. If I was too busy and missed you, I hope to do so next time around. I am still working at get-
ting to know as many Brother Knights as possible, and the senior moments are not a help in that regard.
Summer is soon upon us. Easter is followed by warmer days and we can shed our winter garments. But
don’t forget us – we are still involved during those summer months. It is a great time for some of our favorite outdoor
events. We already have picked our annual Sky Sox tailgate and ball game date – Tuesday, July 21st. So put that
date on the calendar and get ready for a lot of great food and friendship, as we grill and chill. It’s a great inexpensive
family outing, so bring the children. Bring a friend.
Another family event is our annual K of C Family Picnic. We have been holding it at the parish, and now we
have wonderful outdoor grills and a playground for the children. We also want to have some other fun activities, so
watch for that announcement, probably in June. We also plan to be involved in Parish summer fun, like the annual
Parish Picnic and Oktoberfest, so I hope to see you then too.
Of course, in order for you to know about all these doings, we need to be able to keep you informed. We work
very hard at being in touch. We have one of the best newsletters and K of C web pages of any council in Colorado.
We send frequent updates via email which should reach most of our members. Sometimes we call via telephone to
ask for help. A few send text messages. And we still use snail mail for those who ask for it instead of electronic news-
letters. So, My Brother, are we reaching you? Do we have a connection? If not, please tell me what we can do better!
Tell us if you’re not getting anything, and perhaps there’s a broken link we can fix. This is often the case when there’s
a relocation, change of address, new email, or different phone number. After all, it will be more fun to have you with
us!
Easter Blessings!

An Update on King Soopers Gift Cards Herman Jasper
Gift Card Coordinator
The monthly Statement for King Soopers Gift Cards was just received.
From February 22 to March 21 a total of $12,940 was loaded into our King
Soopers Gift Cards. This results in $647 income for our Council and puts
us over $6000.00 from this fundraiser since July 1, 2014.
One thing I noticed in reviewing the report is that some cardholders
“found” their cards after several months of inactivity.
Many thanks for your active participation and making this a success. Should you not be an active
user of a King Soopers Gift Card for purchasing groceries or fuel, take another look at this easy way of
helping your Council in its good works. It is sooo easy! And there is no additional cost for purchases.
Certainly this program with Council 9993 is not for every Knight. But if you can participate, please join in.
By increasing the number of members that are active users of a gift card, we will see our income grow
significantly.
Again, many thanks. If you need a card (or two) give me a call (590-9303) or send an e-mail.

CHARITY – FINAL RESULTS OF OUR INTELLECTUALLY DISABLED
(AKA TOOTSIE ROLL) CAMPAIGN Photos and article by Ron Krom
October is long gone, but the work we did
then was climaxed at the March social meeting.
Thanks to all those folks who gave away those
chocolaty goodies in front of Walmart and King
Soopers, we collected almost $3700 which sent to
State Charities. They in turn returned to us 3 checks
for $696.46 to give to each of our 3 selected
charities.
Thanks to the success of the King Soopers
reward card program, and also thanks to the Monte
Carlo Night and other programs, we were able to add
an additional $303.64 for each recipient. Thus each
local charity received a total of $1000.
So on March 25th, Representatives from
Zach’s Place – Special Kids, Special Families;
Colorado Springs Therapeutic Riding Academy, and Roundup Fellowship attended our social meeting.
Each explained what their organization does to support youth, families, and the community. It was
plainly evident that our donations were going to very worthy causes in our area. Thanks to all of you who
help us make a difference right here in Colorado Springs!

March 2015 Knight of the Month
Paul Emerson Miller, Jr.
Sir Paul, a Knight of Columbus since August, 2001, is likely the best known by members of Council 9993 and Assembly 3049. He is
truly a WORTHY Financial Secretary, serving members in this role for the 10th year (continuously since the 2005-2006). Paul is a 4th
Degree Sir Knight, and also serves as Faithful Comptroller of Assembly 3049, of which he is a Char-
ter Member.
In these roles Paul is responsible for all member information at the Council and Assembly. He
handles billing and collection of dues, and issuing of membership cards—all in a timely manner. He
communicates and coordinates this information with the Supreme Council insuring that all member
information is accurate. All receipts and disbursements go to and through the Financial Secretary.
He and the Treasurer are the team that insures funds are carefully and accurately managed.
In addition, Paul serves the State Council as Financial Secretary Chair. In this role he mentors
and trains Financial Secretaries throughout the state. He is highly regarded for his expertise in
Council matters!
Paul has performed these roles professionally and competently. Many thanks, Paul!
He previously served as Program Chairman for the Council. Paul was co-manager of fundraising
activities at INVESCO field, our first significant fundraising activity several years ago. He continues
to be involved in other council activities such as pancake breakfasts, dividing his time between K of
C activities and volunteering at St. Mary’s High School.
Paul and his wife Bridget are the parents of Allie and Ashley, both very good and active students at St. Mary’s High School. As a fam-
ily, they are very active, both at St. Patrick Parish and at the school.
We also recognize and thank Paul for 12 years of active duty service with the United States Air Force.
Thank you and congratulations, Sir Knight Paul Miller, March 2015 Knight of the Month!
The Culture of Life
First Baby Brady – Now Baby Aurora By Ron Krom, Culture of Life Program
A couple weeks ago, we were shocked to hear of a brutal attack in Longmont, CO. Michelle Wilkins, who responded to an ad for baby
clothes, was stabbed and her 7 or 8 month-old baby Aurora was cut from her womb. Michelle was left bleeding and beaten; the baby died.
The suspect Dynel Lane was arrested at the hospital where she and her husband had brought the baby. Ms. Wilkins managed to call for
help and survive.
Now the challenge for the District Attorney and the courts is to determine what crimes have been committed and what kinds of convic-
tions are possible. Remember that in a recent election, the “Brady Bill” would have made it a crime to kill a child in the womb during a crime
or due to negligence. Baby Brady was killed by a drunk driver, who could not be charged with killing a child under current law. That bill was
defeated because it was feared it would grant “personhood” to the fetus and make abortion illegal. In essence, Colorado voters decided
that it was better to protect the Roe v. Wade decision than to protect babies killed by crime or negligence.
Where does this leave us now? Watch this case with interest, as politicians on both sides are pointing fingers and making claims. The
coroner determined that the baby showed no signs of life outside the womb, and he doesn’t feel there is evidence to prove otherwise. There-
fore, by current Colorado law, the District Attorney can’t charge Ms. Lane with murdering the baby. Initial charges against her were at-
tempted murder, assault, and child abuse. The child abuse charge was later changed to unlawful termination of a pregnancy. The unlawful
termination of a pregnancy law was enacted to afford some protection to the unborn without giving personhood and some say that is
enough. Other legislators are saying we need a new law to better protect babies in such cases. What do you think? Is “unlawful termination
of a pregnancy” equivalent to “murder” or “manslaughter?” Is it good enough?
One thing seems very clear in all of this. If our society would just acknowledge the simple truth – that a child is a child is a child –
whether it is fully developed or not, and whether it has taken a breath or not – then it wouldn’t take a herd of lawyers to decide what kind of
crime has been committed. So watch and pray that our lawmakers will show enough concern to finally protect mothers and their pre-born
children.

Report of the 4th Degree
March was pretty busy for our Sir Knights in Assembly 3049. There was the Saint Patrick Day Parade, which
was very well attended, according to SK Mark Elio. There were several funerals with Honor Guards re-
quested. Council 9993 held Corporate Communion on March 29th. And the Bishop Sheridan celebrated the
Chrism Mass with Honor Guard on March 31st. So there were many different opportunities for Sir Knights to
demonstrate patriotism, support for the Bishop, and to honor our departed Brother Knights. When Sir Knights
participate in funerals, it is a great sign of respect and is greatly appreciated by the families.
So if you are a 4th Degree Knight without regalia and would like to actually participate in these worthy activi-
ties, see Jaime Santos and he can place the order for you. We have an easy, no-interest payment plan, so it is
almost painless. And think how sharp you will look in your tux!
For all of you who see those awesome Sir Knights in regalia and want to be one, there are two things you must
do. First, you must progress to being a 3rd Degree Knight in your council. That is easy enough, since there
are several opportunities through the year. Finally you must attend a 4th Degree Exemplification, held less
often. However, there will be a local 4th Degree Exemplification this coming May in Security.
If you want to attend the May 17th Exemplification, it is necessary to get your application signed by the Fi-
nancial Secretary of the Council and have it submitted to the 4th Degree Assembly which meets on April 15th.
The Assembly will forward your application and $70 payment to the Registration Chairman in time to process
it by the May 17th exemplification. This is short notice, so if you’re interested, put ‘er in gear and get going!
Vivat Jesus!

Council 9993 “Legacy” Fund
Do you know of a brother or are you a brother in need of financial assistance?
The council wants to help! The Legacy Fund of Council #9993 was created by a Resolution approved by members of the Council in May, 2012 and funded by
investing the $31,000 of the then existing Building Fund with Knights of Columbus
Colorado State Charities. In May, 2014, the brothers of Council 9993 approved a Resolution of Intent and
Understanding that the annual earnings of that investment will be available exclusively for charitable causes with a preference to
assisting brother Knights and their families with special needs.
Since the establishment of the Legacy Fund, we have:
Assisted Brother Grant Wick with approximately $1,600 to build a power lift ramp at his home for his wheel chair.
Assisted Brother Joseph Marjan with approximately $800 to fund a concrete sidewalk as secondary exit in their home’s back-
yard to transport his son, Andrew, who is wheelchair and ventilator dependent. This sidewalk was necessary for them to be
Medicaid compliant.
In December 2014, the council provided $500 each to two Knights’ families that were experiencing
significant financial hardships. They were not identified to respect their privacy.
So, $3,400 over the past three years has been used to help our Brothers and their families - pretty awesome and what we are all
about!
If you know of a brother in need or are in need yourself, please let the Grand Knight, D/Grand Knight or one of the trustees know.
Your privacy is of utmost concern and will be respected – please let us help where we can!
Ladies Auxiliary Korner By Fran Krom
Recently in Rome, Pope Francis created a small area of respite for homeless people in the vicinity of the Vatican. There are showers
and restrooms available during certain hours for use by the needy of the area. The Pope also approved an organized tour of the Vati-
can and a special dinner for a group of homeless citizens. In such gestures, our Holy Father urges us to remember and assist our
own poor citizens.
The Ladies Auxiliary will be participating in a special Ministry Weekend April 18-19 with a Bake Sale. The proceeds from the
weekend will be given to two organizations: Sweet Dreams of Colorado, and El Centro de Los Pobres of Pueblo. Sweet Dreams
was started by two women who saw a need in our community and took action. Sweet Dreams provides new pajamas and books
twice a year to children in foster care or protective housing. El Centro de Los Pobres provides assistance to families in Southern
Colorado from a simple building in Avon, Colorado. Volunteers support the organization, which is managed by Sister Nancy Craf-
ton SC. Los Pobres gives clothing, food, items for daily living, and assistance with housing and utilities. Many of the people who
come to Los Pobres are from the agriculture worker population.
With each cookie or cake that we bake this month, we will be answering the call from our Holy Father to embrace the poor of our
own community. Please support us through your contributions of baked goods to our sale or purchase of baked goods from our ta-
ble. Please bring your baked goods to the sale table prior to the 5 p.m. Mass on Saturday, April 18, or prior to the morning Masses
on Sunday, April 19.
In May, the Ladies Auxiliary will be hosting the Spring Luncheon on May 16 at Holy Apostles Church. Tickets will be available
prior to the event and the cost is $20. The program will be a look at fashions from the frontier days of the late 1800’s. Two charac-
ter actors will perform the program and the luncheon will feature a sandwich, salad, and dessert buffet.
Our next meeting will be April 22 at 6:30 p.m. in the Bonzel Hall. We will serve drinks and refreshments at the social hour follow-
ing the meeting. We welcome ladies who are interested in learning more about the Auxiliary to attend the meeting and visit with
other women of faith.

The Bottom Line
"$upporting Our Good Works "
What follows is a brief summary of the financial activities associated with our 3rd Degree Council [9993] and 4th Degree Assembly [3049].
Let’s start with ongoing activities within the Council. Thanks to your quick response, the Council has already received $4,313 of the ex-
pected ~5,000 in annual dues. Remember, your dues go to pay for the daily operation of the Council, including postage, per capita for
State and Supreme, advertising, and name badges. With your dues payment comes the ability to donate 100% of our fundraising efforts
to charity. The March breakfast was a big success, grossing $693.00 in income at an expense of $363.38. Thank you very much to the
great crew of guys who make that happen every month, it is a wonderful service to our Parish community. The dedication of King Soopers
and Shop with Scrip shoppers has led to $4,849.92 in fundraising via our Neighborhood gift card and Scrip programs so far this Fraternal
Year (since Jul). See the website or Brother Herman for more information regarding this NO COST fundraising effort which goes directly to
helping charities all along the Front Range. Lastly, the Council paid $100 to both Life Network and St. Patrick’s for our 2 monthly dona-
tions.
The big news this month was Fish Fry! Most importantly, thank you to Condor Plastering Corp. for their generous donation of $2888 to
pay for the fish fry. The total cost of the supplies this year was $1450.92, allowing 100% of the money donated during the fish fry to go to
Catholic Charities and for an additional $1400 to go to the Council’s charitable distribution fund. Looking forward to July, the annual Sky
Sox $2 Tuesday baseball game has been planned. With a down payment for tickets made, please look to the rest of the newsletter for
more information. Thank you to Brother Vince Lardinois for his ongoing care of the Lighthouse Media display in the gathering space. The
display was restocked at a cost of $264.60 with deposits of $277. Lastly, Council 9993 hosted the annual State Audit at a cost of
$185.47.
If anyone would like more information on the financial status of the Council or the Assembly, please stop by any regular business meeting
or feel free to contact me directly.
Faithfully yours,
Taylor Lilly

Faithful Friar Mike’s Reflection
Jesus has risen, and his personal victory over death and evil is also his
promise of everlasting justice still to come.
This promise should fill us with spiritual relief and joy - the joy of
Easter.
It should give all Christians great confidence.
It is worth it to follow Christ, even if the Christian path is narrow and
steep.
But this central truth also has one very practical application that we must
never forget.
Since God has promised to take care of judging our neighbors, justly and mercifully, we don't have
to.
We are called to love our neighbors as ourselves, not set ourselves above them by condemning
them.
This doesn't mean we should be Pollyanna's, imprudent, or naive.
Jesus doesn't mean we should hire violent criminals to be our baby-sitters.
But he does mean that we should refuse to believe bad things we hear about other people, unless
we see the evidence ourselves.
And he means that we should always avoid speaking badly of other people, just as we hope they
will not spread evil news about ourselves.
Even when we know they have done wrong, we do not know the whole story - only God does. It is
not our job to gossip.
We should think well of everyone, even making excuses for them: "Forgive them, Father," Jesus
said from the cross, "for they do not know what they are doing."
The joy and peace of Easter, of Christ's resurrection and his promise to guide history to a fair and glorious
conclusion, should fill our hearts as we receive our Lord in Holy Communion.
And if we promise, with his help, to leave judging our neighbors up to Christ, that joy and peace will have
a much better chance of staying in our hearts.
Everyone can easily find the darkness in another. But who is the brave one to find the gold.
Have a wonder Easter season.
Fr. Mike
