IS APRIL 21 9:00 A.M.

Come help us celebrate Commitment Sunday on

April 5th. Celebrate Palm Sunday, the reception of our Confirmation class and the

opportunity to commit to the life of our church through

prayers, presence, gifts and service.

March 5, 2009 The Harmony Circle met at the lounge. Jean Blackburn was hostess and served coffee cake, coffee and juice to nine ladies. Ilene Parkhill (new chairman) opened the meeting with a reading from Betty Graham. Pauline Hog-zett had devotions from “Everyday I Live”. Gloria Gleaves will be the new secretary of our group to replace Junellyn Pierce. Mark Campbell gave $5,000 to the U.M.W. in memory of Mildred Dobbs. Discussion was held on how we were going to use it. It was designated for U.M.W. to use for church projects. Ideas were tabled until April. A committee was selected of Nancy Young, Pauline Hogzett and Gloria Gleaves. The treasurer reported on our treasury fund. The motion was made and approved that we give $10.00 to the After Prom. Our prayer list was for Lois McConeghey, Joretta Johnson, Hilda Beedle, Wayne Hopping. Ilene Parkhill led us in prayer. A shared program was held.* Our collection was $2.75. *The program shares lots of laughter as well as religious readings for inspiration. We closed by joining hands and praying the Lord’s Prayer.

HAITIAN MISSION PROJECT $445 was collected to go to the Haitian Mission Project for Reta Diggs.

PERGOLA PROJECT

The cost of the Pergola in the Memory Garden is $2,339. Needed to finish the

project is $119. It is our hope to have the project done by Dedication Sunday in May.

Thank you to those of you who have donated and any contribution is welcome.

CHURCH BUILDING AND OFFICE CLOSED ON MONDAYS

LAY SPEAKING CLASSES! Lay Speaking Classes are going to be held May 1 & 2, 2009 at Harlan UMC, 1202 9th Street, Harlan, IA.

MISSION COMMITTEE The Mission Committee decided to sponsor a Missionary Family; Wilckly and Deana Dorce and their children, Ashley 9, Kelsey 4, and Wilckly 3 months. They work in Carries, Haiti. I went to school and church with Deana’s mother, Reta. Reta has been going over to Haiti the last two years and is known as the “fix it Gramma”. They know she can fix anything with some thread, duct tape, barb wire, hammer, saw or drill. She took a drill back with her this time. They left for Haiti March 7. They had quite a group. What with 6 of them, and 10 people from Missouri going over to help for a couple weeks, they were quite an entourage. Deana cooks for about 30 people every day so they were taking some cookware with them. Lots of things rust from the salty ocean air. Reta said Deana is really excited about coming to visit with us and show pictures of how they live over there. Reta said she could share some of the things she helps out with also. They are coming to our church to visit and share June 14. We are looking forward to their visit.

REVIEW OF 2008 APPORTIONMENTS The finance team met after worship Sunday, March 8. Those present were chair Barb Schorsch, Bernie Bolton, Gloria Gleaves, Jean Blackburn, Marty Rieken, Skip Applegate, and Pastor Shirley Textor. At the end of 2008 our church still owed $6,143 in apportionments. The team consensus is that as members of the United Methodist Church we should strive to meet our apportionment obligations in full. Our treasurer Dick Merkle confirmed that we are currently able to meet our other monthly expenses with funds we have on hand. The team decided to pay our remaining 2008 apportionment obligations before paying our 2009 apportionments. RSVP – YES OR NO When notified of a church meeting please let the chairperson or church office know whether or not you plan to attend. If there is a problem with the chosen meeting date the chairperson might be able reschedule the meeting. FOR PASTORAL CARE When your or a member of your family are hospitalized or have a crises in which pastoral care is needed, please communicate that need directly to Rev. Textor weekday mornings at the church (482-5530) or direct your call to her home phone (482-5539). If she is not available to her home phone, please leave your message on her answering machine.

RADICAL HOSPITALITY We need your ideas and experiences! How can we become a more welcoming church for our members and especially for our guests and visitors? This is an area of church life that our Administrative Council is presently addressing. You can help them in their search by sharing stories about times you have felt warmly welcomed by a group, organization, institution or business. Please share your stories, verbally or in writing, with any member of the Administrative Council before their next regular meeting April 16. These are members of our Administrative Council—Bernie and Norma Bolton, Merlin Jones, Peggy Bentley, Dick Merkle, Jean Blackburn, Robin Jefferson, Mark and Mischa Martens, Barb Schorsch, Addie Mae Smith, Bud Beedle, Gloria Gleaves, and Skip Applegate. THE RIVERSIDE FOOD PANTRY is open every Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The entrance is on the south side of the Oakland Christian Church across from the high school at 108 S. Kearney in Oakland. There are no income requirements for food pantry use. YOUTH MATTERS Rev. Textor is presently teaching confirmation lessons to six 8th graders. Those who choose to will be admitted to church membership on Palm Sunday, April 5th. The 7th and 8th grade junior high group averages 13 in attendance. Counselors are Rev. Textor and Debbie Rollins. Carla Barber and Rita Henningson assisted Rev. Textor in Debbie’s absence this month. Debbie and Shirley are looking for an assistant to help them with small group discussions. Contact either one of them if you can help out. Thanks are due to Suzanne Johnk and Penny Anderson for serving as senior high youth leaders during March. On the 18th the youth took decorations they had made to Oakland Manor and then spent time playing Bingo with the residents. Thanks to those who have and will serve food for youth group meetings this season.

MEMORY GARDEN IN MAY The Memorial Committee would like to tell you what is happening in May. We are having a special service to dedicate the Memory Garden. We will also dedicate the gifts of those that have given in memory of loved ones. If the weather is cooperative we will have part of the service outside. We will have a potluck dinner afterward. Those that we are honoring will not need to bring food, for you will be our guests. We welcome everyone. There will be more written in next months letter. We will tell you about other projects we have. - Addie Mae

CHURCH OFFICERS STILL NEEDED In our January newsletter, pp. 6 and 7, we printed a list of our church leaders.
