STUDENT PLANNER DESIGN COMPETITIONA big thank-you to everyone who took part and submitted a planner design. It was a tough decision but the School Council picked a winner! Well done to May Osborne 7AS and runner-up Abbie Gardner 8MR, their designs will feature on the front and back cover of next years planner. They and the other finalists will receive a Head Teachers’ Award from Mr. Jones.

RED NOSE DAY 2011This year we raised over

£400, well done everyone!

School NurseWe have a new school nurse, Sarah Fenwick who will be starting after half term. Sarah will be coming into school on a weekly basis running a ‘drop-in’ session for students.

Janice Hackett

On Friday 1st of April nearly 70 year 5 and 6 students visited us here at Heathfield for a hands on workshop investigating electrical circuits. The students investigated the question "What difference does the number of cells and lamps in a circuit make to the brightness of the lamps?" Using a mixture of experiments and computer generated simulations the students collected results and made their conclusions. Light relief came from a demonstration of a Van der Graaf generator, students enjoyed seeing the sparks flying, aluminum dishes floating upwards, and most were especially appreciative of seeing Heathfield's Miss Key getting charged up!

Attendance

• If your child is absent from school, please phone us on the first day of absence before 9.30 am, and then write a note in the student planner for when they return.

• We would encourage parents not to take their children out of school for holidays in term time. It is very difficult for students to catch up on the work they miss and could affect their achievement. If unavoidable please let us know at least two weeks in advance, by filling in a Holiday Application Form.

• If your child has to visit the Doctors, Dentist or Opticians, please try to arrange these after school hours or during the holidays. Sometimes it can’t be helped but please ensure that you let the Attendance Manager or Form Tutor know in advance.

YOUR SCHOOL NEEDS YOU......TO BE A PARENT GOVERNOR!

We now have a number of parent governor vacancies at Heathfield and it is very important for the school, that parents’ views are heard at governors meetings. There are 4 governor meetings a year in school, they are in the evening and usually last about 2 hours. You can be a governor if your child is at this school already or in year 6 and will be coming here in September. Anyone can be a governor - you do not have to have any special qualifications. So if you would like to be a governor or would like to chat about the possibility, please call Diane Buckingham (Clerk) or Graham Jones (Head) on 01455 842149

Heathfield were very honoured to hold the first English Network Challenge last month. Two teams of year 9 pupils participated in a fun filled afternoon of English quizzes, challenges and puzzles. All those involved thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon

There were 5 schools, including Heathfield, involved in the afternoon. The visiting schools were: Mount Grace - Hinckley, Leysland - Countesthorpe, Anstey and Stonehill - Birstall

Unfortunately, Heathfield did not win the cup that was won by Stonehill!

Year 5 Make Muffins!

It is hoped that this will be the first of many Challenge Afternoons.

Mrs E. Coley

The Design Technology department played host to four groups of primary school pupils, who came to work with Mrs Bakewell in Food Technology. They made muffins with a variety of flavours and the finished products were certainly good enough to eat! Everyone had a most enjoyable time, even doing the washing up.

YEARBOOK DESIGN COMPETITIONThis year we are holding a competition open to all year 9’s that would like to have a go at designing the front cover of the 2011 yearbook. The design must be your own work, but can be any medium, cartoon or illustration, done on the computer - it’s your choice. The only restrictions are that the final design must be A4 (or in the ratio of A4). Closing date for entries is Monday 6th June. Please hand in your entries to Ms. Prime, Miss Menzfeld or Mrs Macfarlane (Repro).
