The South West is the highest performing
region for apprentices, and the College - with
nearly 1,000 apprentices - is one of the highest
performing providers in the South West.
"Choosing an Apprenticeship was right for
me because it helped me get a lot more
out of my study. I'm not only learning about
painting and decorating, but also what it's
like to be in a working environment. It has
set me up for the future as I now have the
skills I need to carry on at a higher level.
I would recommend an Apprenticeship
to others as it is a great way to start your
working life, and has really improved my
confidence."
Jenny Sibley, Painting and Decorating

What is an Apprenticeship?
An Apprenticeship is a practical, recognised training programme that you undertake whilst being employed with a relevant business. Studying this way means you can earn a wage and get on-the-job training from your workplace - so Apprenticeships are a great way to gain a qualification and work experience at the same time.
Anyone aged 16 or over can start an
Apprenticeship

"An Apprenticeship was right for me as I find I
learn things a lot faster whilst working. I would
definitely recommend an Apprenticeship to
anyone that finds it difficult to work in a
classroom, as you get a lot more freedom
whilst learning, and if taken seriously - and
with a lot of hard work - you can gain all sorts
of qualifications at the end. An Apprenticeship
can set you up with a job that you enjoy, for life!"

"When I was made redundant, it made me think
about which direction my career was heading in.
After weighing up my options I settled on an
Apprenticeship, because it gave me the opportunity
to gain a new qualification and the work experience
that I would need at the same time. I've already
moved on into full-time employment, and now feel
I have a long term career."

How to Become an Apprentice
An essential step in becoming an apprentice is finding a job - one that you enjoy and that you feel would make a good career choice. If you’re already in employment - great, you’ve got a head start, but if you don’t have a job yet, don’t worry. There are several ways to go about finding an employer to take you on as an apprentice.
Speak to the Work-based Learning team at the College. They are
in contact with huge numbers of employers across Devon and
Cornwall, and may be able to match you to a job in your chosen
industry.

Search for a vacancy online. Our Apprenticeship vacancies are
advertised on the City College Plymouth website (www.cityplym.ac.uk),
Careers South West, (www.careerssw.org) and The National
Apprenticeship Service website (www.apprenticeships.org.uk).
2
Approach an employer directly. If you have a clear career goal in
mind, and know a business where you feel you have something to
offer, why not approach them yourself? The Work-based Learning
team has lots of hints and tips about speaking to employers. Have
a chat with them first.

Applying
College Staff will process your application
and initial checks will be made to ensure
you are eligible for an Apprenticeship.
We will invite you in for some assessments
to check that your numeracy, literacy and
ICT skills are at the level required for your
course, and to see if you are suitable for
your chosen vocational area. If you meet the
required standard and it is agreed that this is
the right programme for you, you are ready
for the next step.
Once the Apprenticeship offer is
confirmed by you, the employer
and the College, a date will be
agreed for you to start ‘earning
and learning'!

“The Apprenticeship was really
good because I have been able
to put the skills I learnt in the
classroom into practice in a
real working kitchen. It has
been a great way to begin my
career as a chef, and I have even
been promoted based on the
skills I learnt on the course!”
