ASSIGNMENT 9: VERB CHOICE GROUP PRACTICE

The choice of specific, appropriate verbs is an important use of diction in writing. Many students have not had much practice in using a variety of verbs, but it is important that you learn to use a variety of specific, descriptive verbs in your writing. The use of specific rather than broad words can influence the effectiveness of the work. Consider the following example:

I found my father sleeping at his desk and had to cover up my laugh. (no specific or colorful verbs)

An improved version of the same sentence might read:

I stumbled upon my father dozing at his desk, but I was able to muffle my giggles so that no one heard. (much better)

Notice how much more information the second sentence provides through its use of precise verbs. The following assignment is designed to help you recognize effective, vivid verbs and to help you use them in place of vague verbs in your own writing. Each person in your group will be assigned one or more verbs. Work together with the other members of your group to complete the following:

1. Using a thesaurus and/or a dictionary, find a minimum of four closely related verbs for each of your words.

2. Define each word. 3. Arrange the words in an intensity chart, ranging from least to most. Some verbs

with similar meanings may be about the same in intensity. 4. Then write five sentences, each incorporating one of these five words in a context

which uses the specific word appropriately. EXAMPLE: (intensity is measured on a 1 to 3 scale, with 3 being the most intense.) EXAMPLE DEFINITIONS: sleep - to rest in a suspension of consciousness during which the body is rejuvenated slumber – to sleep in a state of dormancy nap - to sleep briefly, especially in daytime snooze - to nap doze - to sleep lightly

Practice 4

Read the following passage from Chapter 22 of Adventures of

Huckleberry Finn and choose the best answer to each question.

1 They swarmed up towards Sherburn’s house, a-whooping and raging like

Injuns, and everything had to clear the way or get run over and tromped to

mush, and it was awful to see. Children was heeling it ahead of the mob,

screaming and trying to get out of the way; and every window along the road

was full of women’s heads, and there was nigger boys in every tree, and bucks

and wenches looking over every fence; and as soon as the mob would get nearly

to them they would break and skaddle back out of reach. Lots of the women and

girls was crying and taking on, scared most to death.

2 They swarmed up in front of Sherburn’s palings as thick as they could jam

together, and you couldn’t hear yourself think for the noise. It was a little

twenty-foot yard. Some sung out “Tear down the fence! tear down the fence!”

Then there was a racket of ripping and tearing and smashing, and down she goes

and the front wall of the crowd begins to roll in like a wave.

3 Just then Sherburn steps out onto the roof of his little front porch, with a

double-barrel gun in his hand, and takes his stand, perfectly ca’m and deliberate,

not saying a word. The racket stopped, and the wave sucked back.

4 Sherburn never said a word—just stood there, looking down. The stillness

was awful creepy and uncomfortable. Sherburn run his eye slow along the

crowd; and wherever it struck the people tried a little to outgaze him, but they

couldn’t; they dropped their eyes and looked sneaky. Then pretty soon Sherburn

sort of laughed; not the pleasant kind, but the kind that makes you feel like when

you are eating bread that’s got sand in it.

5 Then he says, slow and scornful:

6 “The idea of you lynching anybody! It’s amusing. The idea of you thinking

you had pluck enough to lynch a man! Because you’re brave enough to tar and

feather poor friendless cast-out women that come along here, did that make you

think you had grit enough to lay your hands on a man? Why, a man’s safe in the

hands of ten thousand of your kind—as long as it’s daytime and you’re not behind

him.

7 “Do I know you? I know you clear through. I was born and raised in the

South, and I’ve lived in the North; so I know the average all around. The

average man’s a coward. In the North he lets anybody walk over him that wants

to, and goes home and prays for a humble spirit to bear it. In the South one

man, all by himself, has stopped a stage full of men in the daytime, and robbed

the lot. Your newspapers call you a brave people so much that you think you are

braver than any other people—whereas you’re just as brave, and no braver. Why

don’t your juries hang murderers? Because they’re afraid the man’s friends will

shoot them in the back, in the dark—and it’s just what they would do.

8 “So they always acquit; and then a man goes in the night, with a hundred

masked cowards at his back, and lynches the rascal. Your mistake is, that you

3 Sherburn’s criticism of northerners is that they are too —

A lazy

B religious C passive

D generous

4 In Sherburn’s words, “the man’s friends” he mentions in paragraph 7 are

most comparable to — A “your kind” (paragraph 6) B “a stage full of men” (paragraph 7) C “a brave people” (paragraph 7) D “murderers” (paragraph 7)

5 In paragraph 8, “the rascal” refers to —A a jury member

B one of the man’s friends C a “man” D a murderer

6 When Sherburn says, “you’d a taken it out in blowing,” he means that

without Buck Harkness, the crowd would have —

A realized their mistake B taken no action C come in the dark D been braver

ANSWER EXPLANATIONS

PASSAGE 4

31. (D) “a world” (line 5). In line 5, the author says that he “went through a world” of

ladles. He illustrates what he means by giving examples of the different kinds of ladles

he considered: “ladles with gilded bowls, with embossed handles, with chased

arabesques.” He found none of these ladles to his liking because they were too ornate.

32. (B) the creators of the “world of soup ladles” (lines 5-6). Throughout the essay,

the author contrasts modern artists, particularly writers, and earlier artists, who wrote and

created with simplicity. He laments that “We of this latter day” have lost the art of

simplicity and tend to add unnecessary, distracting ornamentation, much like the creators

of the gilded, embossed ladles.

33. (A) qualify. The author imagines a scenario in which modern writers were called

upon to tell the story of the Nativity. He says the writers would feel that such a powerful

story was “beyond words.” He then confirms that this is “very true—words of ours.”

With this qualification, the author agrees that telling the story of the birth of Christ is

beyond the words of modern writers (“ours”), but it clearly was not beyond the words of

the gospel writers, who wrote the simple account the author repeats in lines 41-43.

34. (C) mirror the principle contrast the author is making. In discussing the

writing of Milton and Shakespeare (lines 47-50), the author uses multi-syllabic, inflated

language to reflect the elaborate writing of these two authors (“the wealth of their

vocabularies . . . the resources of their genius . . . their pomp of eloquence or their royal

pageantry of hexameters”). In lines 50-51, he uses very simple language to describe the

power of the biblical account quoted in lines 41-43: “the effect contained in these two

simple declarative sentences.”

35. (C) “this moment of drama” (line 66). This phrase refers to the climax or

catastrophe in a narrative, not to elaborate language. All the other phrases are figurative

ways of referring to ornamental rhetorical flourishes.

36. (E) ornamental distractions. While the author concedes that in parts of a narrative

where the interest is “languid” we might be willing to “watch the author’s ingenuity” as

he or she adds rhetorical flourishes to the writing, he makes it clear that when there is

important “matter” being presented, “we want to forget the author.” In this case,

elaborate rhetoric would not be “forgivable”; it would be as unforgivable as trying to

dress up Niagara with “coloured fire and calcium lights.”

Passage 4, Questions 31-40. Frank Norris (1870-1902) was an American novelist and essayist during the

Progressive Era. Read the following essay, “Simplicity in Art” (1903), carefully before you choose your answers.

Once upon a time I had occasion to buy so uninteresting a thing as a silver

soup-ladle. The salesman at the silversmith’s was obliging and for my inspection

brought forth quite an array of ladles. But my purse was flaccid, anemic, and I must

pick and choose with all the discrimination in the world. I wanted to make a brave

(5) showing with my gift—to get a great deal for my money. I went through a world of

soup-ladles—ladles with gilded bowls, with embossed handles, with chased

arabesques, but there were none to my taste. “Or perhaps,” says the salesman, “you

would care to look at something like this,” and he brought out a ladle that was as

plain and as unadorned as the unclouded sky—and about as beautiful. Of all the

(10) others this was the most to my liking. But the price! ah, that anemic purse; and I

must put it from me! It was nearly double the cost of any of the rest. And when I

asked why, the salesman said: “You see, in this highly ornamental ware the flaws of the material don’t show,

and you can cover up a blow-hole or the like by wreaths and beading. But this plain

(15) ware has got to be the very best. Every defect is apparent.”

And there, if you please, is a conclusive comment upon the whole business—a

final basis of comparison of all things whether commercial or artistic; the bare

dignity of the unadorned that may stand before the world all unashamed, panoplied

rather than clothed in the consciousness of perfection. We of this latter day, we

(20) painters and poets and writers—artists—must labour with all the wits of us, all the

strength of us, and with all that we have of ingenuity and perserverance to attain

simplicity. But it has not always been so. At the very earliest, men—forgotten,

ordinary men—were born with an easy, unblurred vision that to-day we would hail

as marvelous genius. Suppose, for instance, the New Testament was all unwritten

(25) and one of us were called upon to tell the world that Christ was born, to tell of how

we had seen Him, that this was the Messiah. How the adjectives would marshal

upon the page, how the exclamatory phrases would cry out, how we would

elaborate and elaborate, and how our rhetoric would flare and blazen till—so we

should imagine—the ear would ring and the very eye would be dazzled; and even

(30) then we would believe that our words were all so few and feeble. It is beyond

words, we would vociferate. So it would be. That is very true—words of ours. Can

you not see how we should dramatize it? We would make a point of the

transcendent stillness of the hour, of the deep blue of the Judean midnight, of the

liplapping of Galilee, the murmur of Jordan, the peacefulness of sleeping Jerusalem.

(35) Then the stars, the descent of the angel, the shepherds—all the accessories. And our

narrative would be as commensurate with the subject as the flippant smartness of a

“bright” reporter in the Sistine chapel. We would be striving to cover up our innate

incompetence, our impotence to do justice to the mighty theme by elaborateness of

design and arabesque intricacy of rhetoric.

(40) But on the other hand—listen: “The days were accomplished that she should be delivered, and she brought

forth her first born son and wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a

manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.”

Simplicity could go no further. Absolutely not one word unessential, not a

(45) single adjective that is not merely descriptive. The whole matter stated with the

terseness of a military report, and yet—there is the epic, the world epic, beautiful,

majestic, incomparably dignified, and no ready writer, no Milton nor Shakespeare,

with all the wealth of their vocabularies, with all the resources of their genius, with

all their power of simile or metaphor, their pomp of eloquence or their royal

(50) pageantry of hexameters, could produce the effect contained in these two simple

declarative sentences.

Reading Selection 2

Read the following selection from Book VIII of The Odyssey and choose the best answer to each question.

1 Supper was then served, and the wine was mixed for drinking. A servant led in the favorite bard Demodocus, and set him in the midst of the company, near one of the bearing-posts supporting the cloister, that he might lean against it. Then Odysseus cut off a piece of roast pork with plenty of fat (for there was abundance left on the joint) and said to a servant, “Take this piece of pork over to Demodocus and tell him to eat it; for all the pain his lays may cause me I will salute him none the less; bards are honored and respected throughout the world, for the muse teaches them their songs and loves them.”

2 The servant carried the pork in his fingers over to Demodocus, who took it and was very much pleased. They then laid their hands on the good things that were before them, and as soon as they had had enough to eat and drink, Odysseus said to Demodocus: “Demodocus, there is no one in the world whom I admire more than I do you. You must have studied under the Muse, Zeus’ daughter, and under Apollo, so accurately do you sing the return of the Achaeans with all their sufferings and adventures. If you were not there yourself, you must have heard it all from someone who was. Now, however, change your song and tell of the wooden horse which Epeus made with the assistance of Athene, and which Odysseus got by stratagem into the fort of Troy after freighting it with the men who afterwards sacked the city. If you will sing this tale aright, I will tell all the world how magnificently heaven has endowed you.”

3 The bard inspired of heaven took up the story at the point where some of the Argives set fire to their tents and sailed away while others, hidden within the horse, were waiting with Odysseus in the Trojan place of assembly. For the Trojans themselves had drawn the horse into their fortress, and it stood there while they sat in council round it, and were in three minds as to what they should do. Some were for breaking it up then and there; others would have it dragged to the top of the rock on which the fortress stood, and then thrown down the precipice; while yet others were for letting it remain as an offering and propitiation for the gods, and this was how they settled it in the end, for the city was doomed when it took in the Argives waiting to bring death and destruction on the Trojans. Anon he sang how the sons of the Achaeans issued from the horse, and sacked the town, breaking out from their ambuscade. He sang how they overran the city hither and thither and ravaged it, and how Odysseus went raging like Ares along with Menelaus to the house of Deiphobus. It was there that the fight raged most furiously, nevertheless by Athene’s help he was victorious.

4 All this he told, but Odysseus was overcome as he heard him, and his cheeks were wet with tears. He wept as a woman weeps when she throws herself on the body of her husband who has fallen before his own city and people, fighting bravely in defense of his home and children. She screams aloud and flings her arms about him as he lies gasping for breath and dying, but her enemies beat her from behind about the back and shoulders, and

WRITING SELECTION 5

Veronica has written a science report about scorpions in order to help others better understand and protect themselves from these creatures. She has asked you to look over her paper before she turns it in. As you read it, look for revisions she should make. Then answer the questions that follow.

Understanding Deadly Scorpions

(1) Bark scorpions are the most common variety of scorpion found in Baja

California Sur. (2) La Paz, where John Steinbeck’s The Pearl is set, is located in this

region. (3) This type of scorpions is also considered the most dangerous to humans.

(4) Without proper treatment, the sting of a bark scorpion can be deadly.

(5) These scorpions are straw or tan colored, and the adults can range from

two to three inches in length. (6) They are in the same family as spiders and have

eight legs. (7) They also have eight eyes, but they have poor vision and can see only

light or dark. (8) Known to climb trees and crawl across walls and ceilings, they are

very quick and agile. (9) The bark scorpion is the only scorpion known to be an avid

climber. (10) Instead of burrowing into the ground like most scorpions, wood piles

and trees are where the bark scorpions live. (11) The scorpions’ preference for

climbing trees over burrowing gave rise to the name “bark” scorpions.

(12) The bark scorpion is a nocturnal predator. (13) It has two small pinchers

and a long, thin tail with a stinger on the tip. (14) Small prey such as insects and

spiders are torn apart with the pinchers. (15) The scorpion’s venom is held in a small

gland at the tip of the tail. (16) The stinger injects the venom, and the central

nervous system of the prey is effected.

(17) The bark scorpion is probably the variety of scorpion Steinbeck referred

to in his novel. (18) In the novel, a scorpion enters a brush house through a

crevasse and descends down a rope into a wooden crib. (19) The scorpion then

Glossary of terms

Questions 34-37 refer to the following experiment.

Two cell lines that have a mutation which does not allow them to respond normally to a hormone that binds to, and acts through, a plasma membrane receptor, have been isolated from human tumors and are being grown in tissue culture. Normal cells, cultured under identical conditions, respond to the exogenous application of the hormone by turning a tumor suppressor gene on as pictured above. In an attempt to narrow down where, in the signal transduction cascade for activation of this gene, each mutant cell line is blocked, each culture was subjected to a number of treatments. The hormone was applied to the culture media, but IP3 and Ca+2 were injected directly into the cytoplasm of the cells. The results of the following treatments on the gene’s activity are presented in the following chart.

34. If the hormone were injected directly into the cells, instead of being applied exogenously, what result would be expected? The gene would

(A) be expressed in all three cell lines (B) not be expressed in any of the cell lines (C) be expressed in the both mutants, but not in the normal cells (D) be expressed in the normal cells, but not in the mutants

Questions 39-40 refer to the graph below, which resulted from the following experiment.

The DNA of a group of mammalian cells was labeled with a fluorescent dye, and then the cells were divided into two groups and plated out on culture media. At the time point indicated by “A” in the figure, platelet derived growth factor (PDGF) was added to culture 1, but not to culture 2. The average intensity of fluorescence per cell for both cultures was plotted against time in the graph below.

39. During the portion of the curve labeled B, the cells of culture 1

(A) exited the cell cycle (B) were in the G1 phase of the cell cycle (C) were undergoing DNA replication (D) were dividing in two

40. The first mitosis of the cells in culture 1 occurred between

(A) 3 and 4 hours (B) 4 and 12 hours (C) 12 and 16 hours (D) 16 and 18 hours

WRITING LESSONS from GREAT AUTHORS MASTER CLASSES Series

The Master Classes Series is based on the premise that teachers and students can find no better examples of excellence in writing than those provided by the literature they are studying. In each lesson, “master examples” drawn from literary masterpieces are used to guide students in developing writing skills. The names of the four levels were inspired by the guild system of medieval times, emphasizing that writing is indeed a craft.
