The symposium programme offers multiple opportunities for professional contact and development. The APIBA Special Interest Groups Symposium 2005 seeks to create opportunities for the professional development of teachers of English (APIBA Statutes, Art. 2), to enable SIG members to meet colleagues with similar pedagogic and research interests, to provide SIG members with a forum to share with other colleagues the work they have been doing since 2000 and to encourage teachers of English and teacher trainees who are not members of a SIG to join one. Presenters will conduct workshops, make demonstrations, or present papers. Proposals from APIBA SIG members and members of SIGs of other FAAPI Associations are welcome. Presenter's Guidelines a) Type of presentation 15-Minute Demonstration: A demonstration shows a technique for teaching or testing. Normally the presenter’s statement of the theory underlying the technique takes no more than 5 minutes. The rest of the time is used for showing how that particular technique works in practice. 30-Minute Papers: A paper tells the participants something about what the presenter is doing or has done, in relation to theory and practice. We strongly recommend that presenters use audio-visual aids during this session. 60-Minute Workshops: A workshop is a session in which there is active audience participation via the experiencing and discussing of tasks suggested by the presenter.

The AAPPIIBBAA SSppeecciiaall IInntteerreesstt GGrroouuppss SSyymmppoossiiuumm 22000055 seeks to create opportunities for the professional development of teachers of English (APIBA Statutes, Art.

Presenter's Guidelines

a) Type of presentation

15-Minute Demonstration: A demonstration shows a technique for teaching or testing.

60-Minute Workshops: A workshop is a session in which there is active audience participation via the experiencing and discussing of tasks suggested by the presenter.

b) Important information to submit

A Presenter's Form, stating whether you are submitting a proposal for a 15-minute presentation, a 30-minute paper or a 60-minute workshop and listing the target audience, maximum numbers of participants, the presentation's title, author(s), author affiliations (including FAAPI Association membership if applicable), contact address, telephone number/s, FAX number/s, e-mail address/es, and a 50-word paragraph with the presenter's bio data.

c) The Summary

All potential presenters should submit a narrative summary of 500 words that provides a clear understanding of the presentation’s content. Presenters should outline exactly what they are going to talk about in the session and how it will be structured. The summary will not appear in the conference programme.

d) The Abstract

The abstract will appear in the conference programme. It should accurately reflect the content of what the presenter is going to talk about: it is on the basis of the abstract that participants will choose whether they wish to attend a particular session. The abstract should be clear and unambiguous. Presenters should submit an original and two copies of 75 words each. Please note: Abstracts which are over 75 words cannot be considered for inclusion in the programme.

e) Topics:

Related to the teaching of English, including but not limited to: Applied Linguistics and SLT (Second Language Teaching), Business / ESP, Computers, Cultural Studies, Language, Phonology, Literature.

f) The Content of your Session

Your proposal will be considered for inclusion in the programme if it fulfils the following criteria.

You have not given this session, or a version of this session, at a previous APIBA or FAAPI academic event.

It is clear from the summary that you have something new to say or that you plan to shed light on a topic which has not been dealt with at other conferences or in print. It should also be clear that you have respected the level of expertise of your audience.

Your session should be of practical use for the participants. If your talk is mainly theoretical, please ensure that you end with a consideration of practical issues and implications.

If your presentation relies heavily on a description of your teaching situation, make sure that you discuss either the implications for people working in similar contexts or its general relevance.

It should be clear from your summary what exactly you are going to talk about. Please make sure that you are as explicit as possible, as participants become frustrated when they attend a session and find that the abstract in the programme does not reflect what the speaker presents.
