AP US History course content is organized into units of study that comprise the content and skills that colleges and universities typically expect students to master to qualify for college credit and/or placement. The nine units in AP US History, their approximate weighting on the AP Exam, and currently scheduled unit test dates are listed in the table below:

Textbook: Kennedy, David M., Lizabeth Cohen, and Thomas A. Bailey. The Ameri-can Pageant: A History of the Republic. 16th ed. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 2016. (ISBN # 978-1305075917)

You will check out a copy of the course text through the BHS Library. This book should remain at home to use for all homework assignments. There will be textbooks available in the classroom to use during class. If the book is lost or severely damaged the approximate replacement cost is $200

Technology: Google Classroom: Videos, links, handouts, and all other relevant course materials will be posted in our Google Classroom. Join Code: ________________

Computers & Phones: Chromebooks will be used as needed to complete some assignments, and to enhance learning in the classroom. If we are not using computers for a specific assignment, your computer must be closed and put away. Unless Ms. Justice specifically say that you may have your cell phones out, you must keep them away at all times.

Semester Grades will be calculated based on the following percentages:

Unit Tests 40%

At the end of each unit there will be a test that includes AP-style

stimulus-based multiple choice questions and short answer questions.

Test scores can be improved with test corrections (due1week after receiving

the graded exam). Test re-takes are available only after completing corrections

(following the assigned format) and having a conference with Ms. Justice.

Writing 25%

Throughout the course there will be numerous summative writing assignments, as well as essays that will

be written in response to both AP-style Document-Based Questions (DBQs) and Long-Essay Questions

(LEQs). Some assignments/essays will be written as homework, while others will be written during class in

a timed-write environment. Essay re-writes may be submitted within 5 days of receiving the graded es-

say and only after having a conference with Ms. Justice.

AP US History adheres to the Bremerton School District Standards-Based Grading and Reporting Policy. All grades will be

determined based on evidence from assessments that measure achievement on course, state, and national standards.

Quizzes 15% Periodic, scheduled quizzes will be given to check for understanding during each unit.

You can miss up to 3 quizzes due to absence each semester without penalty. Quiz

scores can be improved with quiz corrections (due on the current unit test day). Quiz

re-takes are available only after having a conference with Ms. Justice and submitting cor-

rections (following the assigned format) within 3 days of receiving the corrected quiz.

Summative Assignments 10%

During each unit there will be assignments given both in class and as

homework that assess your learning of historical concepts and ideas.

Skills for Success 10%Skills necessary for success

in high school and beyond,

such as arriving on time with

required supplies, being

self-directed, appropriately

managing technology us-

age, using class time ap-

propriately, giving your

best effort, etc.

In accordance with district policy, NO EXTRA CREDIT will be given.

Late Work

You may submit late assignments up to 5 school days from the original due

date with a 10% late work penalty. You MUST attach a completed Late

Work Ticket to the assignment in order to receive credit.

If there is an extenuating circumstance that makes it difficult or impossible to

complete the assessment within 5 school days you should see Ms. Justice

about the possibility of an extension before the end of the 5 day late-work

window.

Due to the rigor and pacing of this course, late work is strongly discouraged!

The AP Exam

Missed Quizzes:

You can miss up to 3 quizzes per semester due to absence without penalty.

Due to the rigorous pacing of the course, any additional missed Quizzes must be made up within 2

school days.

Missed Tests: It is your responsibility to reschedule any unit test missed because of an absence. Due to the rigorous

pacing of the course, Unit Tests must be made up within 3 school days.

Make-up times must be arranged in advance with Ms. Justice. Due to the amount of material that must

be covered during class, quizzes and tests must be made up outside of class time.

Class Attendance: Attendance is crucial to your success in this AP class. A majority of this class is based on lecture, discussion, and in-class activities. All assignments will be posted in the Google Classroom, but discussions and many other activities cannot be replicated if you miss class. It is your responsibility to find out what you need to make up after an absence! After checking Google

Classroom, if you have additional questions please check with a classmate, or ask Ms. Justice for help.

The national AP US History Exam is on Friday, May 8, 2020.

Every student enrolled in AP US History at BHS is expected to take the exam. The exam is 3 hours, 15 minutes long and consists of 55 multiple choice questions, 3 short-answer questions, and two essay questions. There is a fee of approximately $90 to take the exam (financial assis-tance is available for students who qualify for free/reduced lunch). Students who pass the exam can earn college credit. Exam registration will take place in October and due dates for the fees,

as well as fee waiver qualifications, will be announced later in the year.

Page 6: AP US History 2019-2020 · 2019. 10. 10. · Unit 2 Period 2: 1607-1754 6-8% October 11, 2019 Unit 3 Period 3: 1754-1800 10-17% October 31, 2019 Unit 4 Period 4: 1800-1848 10-17%

AP US History is a rigorous academic class and it is, therefore, expected that an academic environment will be maintained from bell to bell. Your contribution to

an academic environment will be to:

• Be present in class every day, and arrive on time. Arriving after the bell will result in a tardy ticket.

• Follow the BHS Knight Creed and Be Kind, Have Honor, and Show Pride in your interactions with peers and

adults at all times.

• Bring all materials, as required, and be prepared for class with all homework and assignments.

• Work to your best potential every day, ask questions, and actively participate in class activities and discussions.

• Practice academic honesty, which includes both honestly answering questions in class and on assignments, and only signing one's own name to one's own work. Students found copying, cheating, or plagiarizing will be subject to the

consequences detailed in the BHS Student Handbook.

• Follow all policies and procedures in the BHS Student Handbook including the Electronics Policy, which states:

Course Rules & Procedures

A P U S H I S T O R Y * M S . J U S T I C E * B R E M E R T O N H I G H S C H O O L * R O O M 3 3 1

Electronics may not be used in classroom/lab areas during scheduled instructional time unless teacher directed. Disciplinary consequences apply for a student who fails to comply with rules and/or a teacher/staff member’s request for a device.

Unless Ms. Justice specifically says that you may have your cell phone out, you must keep it put away at all times during class. If your phone is out during a non-teacher-directed time, you will be asked to place it in “cell phone jail” for the remainder of the period. If that is not effective, a disciplinary referral will be written and disciplinary

action will be assigned in accordance with the Bremerton High School discipline code.

Remember, AP students are serious students, and serious students are not on their phones during class :-)

The Most Important Information in the Entire Syllabus

You, the student - as a whole person - are my top priority as a teacher.

Due to the rigor of the course, and the fact that many of you are taking multiple rigorous courses on top of other school and

community activities, a high degree of stress can develop. While some stress is normal, it should never be suffocating. First and

foremost, I want you to know that your well-being matters more to me than any test score ever could. My door is always open

and I am here to listen and provide as much support to students as I can. If the workload of the course becomes overwhelming,

please reach out and talk to me individually so that we can strategize about how to make things work, while also accomplishing

the objectives of the course.

With that being said, AP courses are not for everyone and there is no shame in electing to take a

different level of the course. AP courses do not define who you are as a person. Sometimes, at

absolutely no fault of our own, the weight of the stress and emotions in our lives becomes over-

whelming. You should know that myself and every adult in our school, including our Guidance

Counselors, are always willing to listen. Please reach out if you need help!

However, if you do not feel comfortable talking with one of us, a few important numbers that

you can utilize 24/7/365 are: Crisis Text Line: Text HOME to 741741
