IE • THE DAILY PLANT-IT February 2012 5

Greetings everyone! I hope you all are staying warm and dry despite the long overdue

rain we’ve been receiving. Rainy days offer the perfect opportunity to get you in the office, behind your computer, and working on developing your business in ways you otherwise wouldn’t have the time to do. One such way is through social media. There’s no secret to what social media is, however, do you know the secret to

using it to build your business?

The days of shying away from social media are over. You must embrace it and we at CLCA are here to share the secret of how to use it to make your business grow. If you attended LIS earlier this month, hopefully you had a chance to stop by the Technology Café. The café featured Green Industry peers and professionals demonstrating their apps and offering the opportunity to ask even the simplest of questions in a stress free, painless, technology learning environment. We learned how to manage projects, calculate sprinkler times, track our fleet, access a plant care guide and more, all quickly and easily from the field using the smart phone. Even more importantly, we learned about networking on LinkedIn and

Facebook and heard from “real” CLCA LinkedIn Group members who shared how they are using this technology in their own businesses.

If you were unable to visit the Technology Café, or did but still want more help, the IE Chapter has something planned to help you too. On Tuesday, Feb. 21, we are offering a social media meeting where you can learn to use social media as a strategy in your business and not just another tactic. We have Co-Author of Killer Business Plan Peter Mehit as our keynote speaker who will help you get started with using social media. COO of Custom Business Planning and Solutions, a company that brings the power of entrepreneurship to start ups and small business owners, Peter is the perfect candidate to speak to our group and help you to get your feet wet in social media.

2012 is the year to embrace social media and we’re here to help. Don’t be left behind in the dark ages…grow with us. I look forward to seeing you on Feb. 21!

Warm regards, Richard Daigle

Netafim USA announces the opening of a new California recycling center that repurposes used polyethylene tubing into a variety of plastic products,

including Netafim landscape dripline.

PHX Recycling Inc, located in Fowler, CA, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Netafim, which oversees the entire recycling process.

Used landscape dripline from all manufacturers is accepted, if the tubing meets Netafim’s stringent product testing and quality control standards. The company monitors the entire recycling process – from testing and evaluating used tubing in the field to washing, grinding and re-pelletizing.

“Because Netafim oversees the operation, we can ensure that our high manufacturing standards are met, and that new Netafim dripline products made from recycled materials

continue to be among the most reliable in the world,” said Michael Dowgert, director of marketing for Netafim USA.

“The Netafim recycling program lessens the impact of used tubing on the environment and helps create a true cycle of sustainability,” he said.

Before tubing is accepted by PHX, a sample must be submitted to Netafim to determine material content and age. The dripline must also be debris- and contaminate-free and, if accepted, must be bundled or coiled prior to delivery or pick-up.

PHX Recycling is located near Netafim’s Fresno, CA, headquarters. Pick up service is available in California from Mendocino, Glenn and Butte counties in the north to San Diego and Imperial counties in the south.

Pick ups can be scheduled by filling out a “Pick Up Request” form available on the PHX website: www.phxrecycling.com/pickup.

Netafim is a global leader in low volume irrigation and has manufactured landscape dripline for more than 20 years. The company features an extensive range of irrigation products, including 17mm Techline® CV and 12mm Techline® EZ, both made from recycled materials, and a complete line of drip accessories, including filters, point-source drippers, controllers, valves and hydrometers.

For more information about Netafim recycling or low volume products, contact the company at 888.638.2346 or online at www.netafimusa.com.

Netafim USA Opens New Dripline Recycling Center• Accepts All Approved Landscape Tubing

Netafim Techline CV and Techline EZ driplines are now manufactured with recycled polyethylene tubing to minimize the impact of used tubing on the environment. Netafim oversees the entire recycling operation, ensuring the process and products meet the company’s stringent quality control standards.

The Green Industry and marathon running have at least one thing in common—Ewing Irrigation.

Ewing employees finished the 2012 P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Marathon and Half Marathon on Jan. 15. Team Ewing had 169 participants from 17 states - earning the team first place in the GET FIT Challenge - a friendly competition that encourages companies and groups to train and run in the half or full marathon.

The race tests our bodies, and is a testament to Ewing employees, said Ewing president Doug York.

Some employees ran the race for the eighth time this year. In 2005, Ewing started sponsoring employees in the race to encourage greater health and wellness throughout the company.

At Team Ewing’s pre-race dinner on Jan. 14, Ewing employees shared why they participated in the 13.1- or 26.2-mile race.

Bill Snider, manager of Ewing’s Santa Barbara location, decided to run his first half marathon with the team in 2005 because he hadn’t been exercising. At first he was only able to run for a few minutes, but after months of building up his endurance, he finished his first half marathon.

“It was the longest 2 hours, 21 minutes and 3 seconds of my life, but I’d done something I never thought I’d be able to do.” Snider has continued to run the race each year with Team Ewing, and has completed a total of 20 half marathons. “I’ve learned about nutrition and health, fitness, hydration and pacing…I’m now a runner and will always be a runner,” he said.

Warren Gorowitz, Ewing’s vice president of sustainability and conservation, ran his first half marathon with Ewing in 2006 and discovered his love for running as well.

“It’s an individual sport. You get to challenge yourself every time you’re out there,” Gorowitz said. He now has 16 half marathons and five full marathons under his belt, and a new

goal to complete a race abroad every year, including a race on the Great Wall of China in 2013.

Ewing’s regional manager for Central California, Phil Chan, also ran the half marathon this year. He was encouraged by Ewing’s emphasis on wellness and goal setting to start making changes to his health last year.

He started eating small meals throughout the day, drinking more water, and walking 30 minutes a day. After nine months he had lost 110 pounds, and is now saving $700 a year on medications he no longer needs. “I achieved these goals because I wrote a plan down, and looked at it on a regular basis,” Chan said.

Team Ewing also reached its goal this year of raising $25,000 for Autism Speaks. Team Ewing runners collected more than $7,500; Phillips Hadco made a $10,000 donation to the cause; and $8,000 was donated by Ewing.

Team Ewing has been committed to the cause of Autism Speaks and has raised a total of $125,000 since 2008. With these funds, Autism Speaks is finding more treatments and offering more resources and education to families and communities affected by autism, said Amy Hummell, the Arizona director for Autism Speaks. Today, one in every 110 children is diagnosed with autism. By raising funds and awareness “we’re making a better life for those adults and children,” she said.

In addition to participating in the marathon, Ewing’s wellness programs this past year included the Just Walk 10,000 Steps-a-Day, Biggest Loser and Active for Life programs, and sponsoring employees for the Tempe International Triathlon.

About Ewing: Ewing is the largest family-owned supplier of landscape and water management products in the country. They offer commercial and residential irrigation supplies, water management solutions, landscape and turf products, hardscape, landscape lighting, water features, erosion control, industry-leading seminars and more to professionals serving the landscaping, sports turf, golf, agricultural and industrial industries.

Letter tO the editOr

We have received many calls and emails based on the relationship change between LCIS and CLCA. We want to take this opportunity to both thank you for

all the calls and emails supporting LCIS and the services we provide, and dispel any misinformation that appears to be growing by the day.As of January 01, 2012, you no longer have to be a CLCA member to take advantage of the LCIS insurance programs. While we still value our relationship with the CLCA and support the traditional vision/focus of the organization, you are no longer required to be a member of the CLCA to obtain or remain a valued client of LCIS. Simply stated and with regards to LCIS, this is the only change that impacts you, the landscape contractor.LCIS will continue to be financial sponsors of CLCA at the ELITE level, remain supporters of local CLCA chapters, stay very active in local CLCA chapter meetings/functions and continue to hold local CLCA chapter board positions. We remain and are still advocates of the organization and good stewards of the green industry. LCIS remains committed to all landscape contractors and will continue to provide the best coverages with very competitive rates while supporting and providing specialized value and services to our LCIS landscape contractor policyholders. What really happened? The recent decision to end the exclusive contract between our organizations was a business decision driven primarily by the very same economic pressures that many of you are likely feeling within your own business. Our recently expired contract did not allow us to retain the business of any landscape contractor who did not wish to continue their membership with CLCA. This desire by our policyholders was increasing rapidly in recent years and was beginning to have an impact on LCIS financially.Golden Oak/LCIS made a request to amend the existing contract and was seeking flexibility within our exclusive contract with CLCA regarding maintaining coverage (insurance policies) on businesses that either could no longer afford, or did not want to be, CLCA members. CLCA denied the request. Golden Oak/LCIS then sent a contract termination letter (per contract guidelines) and a follow up letter requesting our desire to negotiate a new contract. In addition, we presented CLCA with several options on this subject and we were open to their thoughts and expected some form of interactive response from the CLCA. After our formal presentation, CLCA opted not to negotiate with Golden Oak/LCIS on a new contract, but instead decided to

honor the contract expiration and pursue other options. This was done without any member input or consensus. For the past 20+ years, Golden Oak, Birch and LCIS have played a substantial role in supporting the CLCA as an organization, as well as playing a primary role in membership growth of the CLCA for many years. In addition to supporting the CLCA organization, our exclusive program supports the members in terms of competitive rates, annual rebates and equity, not to mention world class service and accounting flexibilities. In other words, we offer the best value for your insurance premium. We will continue to be the landscape contractor insurance program that was specifically developed for you by LCIS, Inc. over 22 years ago, and that you have all come to know, trust, depend on and support over the years. All of us at LCIS look forward to working with you during the year and at policy renewal time. We can assure you LCIS will be as we have always been, very competitive. Thank you again for your calls and emails in support of the LCIS landscape insurance program - they are greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Kim Ayala, CIC, CISR, CPSR, CPIW, President/CEO

Despite budget reductions, the Legislative Committee will be organizing a 2012 Legislation Conference this coming May 22-23. In order to facilitate

this great event for the most members possible, the Committee asked the Board of Directors to disassociate with CILC and their event, and allow us to create our own CLCA Legislative Conference. Those funds will now be redirected to a CLCA hosted Legislative Day in Sacramento.

As time and funds are short, we will have to have a smaller event compared to the CILC event of past years. We will work within our industry and the construction trade to expand this conference in future years. It typically takes larger crowds to draw speakers to these events, however, our lobbyist Park Terry and Assistant Executive Director Larry Rohlfes have done a great job in the past securing legislators who speak at CLCA’s smaller events.

We are planning a two-day event starting on Tuesday, May 22 with a grassroots lobbying training session, followed by a dinner and speaker. The next morning will begin with a focus on bills that CLCA will be supporting, which typically are promoting water conservation, strengthening our trade, license, and legislation related to construction. For lunch we will be inviting an author of legislation that we support to help us speak to their bill in our afternoon lobbying at the State Capitol. This is a new, more focused

format. We will also be presenting CLCA’s Legislator of the Year Award at the event.

Protocols have been established for who has priority to attend this event with our current budget limit of 30 CLCA members. It will be the first to register, with reserve given to active Legislation Committee members, followed by active chapter Legislation Directors. We also have always encouraged those members who have a passion for politics to join us in supporting the efforts of CLCA’s legislative team and we will have limited space for those individuals as well. All of the attendees are expected to build and maintain relationships with their local legislators and participate in all CLCA letter writing campaigns as a condition of accepting this invitation to the Legislative Conference.

The cost will be the same as in the past – $150 per person and you will need to book your own flights. This will be reimbursed after you participate in the event and send a copy of your follow up letter with your legislator or who you visited in the Capitol. We are also looking for industry sponsors and we will have specific opportunities for sponsorship at our dinner and lunch to present their companies to CLCA and the legislators.

Contact Larry Rohlfes for details at [email protected]. Registration and sponsor forms will be available at www.clca.org. ~ Pete Dufau, CLCA Dir. of Legislation

Introducing the FIRST EVER Landscape Architect and Specifier Expo (LA Expo) to be held March 30th, 2012 at the Long Beach Convention Center. The LA Expo was

created specifically for Landscape Architects, Designers and Commercial Specifiers in the western United States. This show is an offshoot of The Landscape Expo - Long Beach (TLE/LB), which serves the Installation and Maintenance Contractor, Head Groundskeeper, Landscape and Golf Course Superintendent and Lawn Care Professional.

“As the design segment of the industry is very different from the installation and management elements, opening a new venue will allow us to focus on targeted attendees for each conference,” said George Schmok, expo producer and LASN publisher. “LA Expo will be a regional venue in which Landscape Architects, Specifiers and those who

provide goods and services to the profession can get together to exchange ideas, introduce new products and technologies, establish and renew business relationships, and talk projects.”

The 2012 Landscape Architect Expo is also geared for City and Land Planners, Park & Recreation Professionals, Resort and Facility Managers, Architects, Developers and Landscape Designers. Discounted Early Bird pricing is currently available.

The California Landscape Contractors Association (CLCA) is pleased to announce

the documentary Rock the Boat is the recipient of the People’s Choice Award at the Wild and Scenic Film Festival, January 15, 2012 in Nevada City, California. CLCA is a sponsor and co-producer for the documentary Rock the Boat, the controversial tale of a group’s 51- mile boating expedition down the cemented canals known as the Los Angeles River in 2008.

The cement lined walls of the river were originally built by the Army Corps of Engineers to move water away from Los Angeles to prevent flooding. Defying the local authorities and the Army Corps of Engineers, the group went down the river despite opposition, hoping to have the EPA declare it a navigable river so that it could gain protection under the Clean Water Act.

On July 7, 2010 the EPA declared the Los Angeles River a navigable river, making it eligible for federal protection and funding under the Clean Water Act. According to the Los Angeles Times article, U.S. EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson is quoted as saying, “This is a watershed as important as any other. So we are going to build a federal partnership to empower communities like yours. We want the L.A. River to demonstrate how urban waterways

across the country can serve as assets in building stronger neighborhoods, attracting new businesses and creating new jobs.”

Since that time, Los Angeles has also become one of seven cities chosen for a pilot project to revitalize polluted urban waterways. The program is called the Urban Waters Federal Partnership and it works with President Barack Obama’s America’s Great Outdoors initiative. This partnership aims to create local jobs, improve quality of life and improve health by revitalizing waterways.

“When we met with the Director Thea Mercouffer of Rock the Boat, we were very excited about the possibilities of what the Los Angeles River could become, not only from a recreational and flood prevention perspective, but also as a significant water source for the area,” said Chuck Carr, Director of Communications for CLCA. “We think this movie brings attention to what the river is now and what it could be in the future. With California’s water issues, rather than see all the water pushed out to sea, there are lots of ways to harness some of that water for Los Angeles to use,” Carr added.

Chuck went on to say that everyone at CLCA was excited to see that Rock the Boat was chosen to receive the award. He praised the group’s

organizer George Wolf, Director Thea and their team of volunteers who commandeered the Los Angeles River. “The Rock the Boat team should be congratulated on the success of their efforts to improve our environment and make the most use of our natural resources,” he proclaimed.

With its strong support of the Rock the Boat project, CLCA demonstrates its belief that river restoration is a great step to help Green LA and a positive step in helping to solve California’s water crisis. “It is very exciting, not only from a water source and conservation perspective, but imagine what it could do for the citizens of Los Angeles,” remarked Carr. “Trees and other plants positively alter the environment, reduce carbon emissions, improve the air quality, protect the land, create oxygen and sustain life. Restoring the Los Angeles River will enhance the lives of all who live in California and be a great example for the rest of the United States,” he concluded.
