Pastor News

This summer I dreamt that I died. I was walking along a snowbank with someone and before we knew it; the snowbank broke like shattering ice on a deep, frigid lake. Instantly I was plum-meting through freezing water. In one moment I was aware I was dying. In the next, I knew there was no need to struggle – no need to fight, as it only would make it all worse. All that was required was to let go. Then, I heard these words from within: “Thank you! Thank you! Thank you for such an amazing life!” On the heels of these words in the dream, I started listing all the people for whom I am incredibly grateful. (Ok, I admit: Rufus, my beloved toy poodle, made the list too!) I woke up in absolute awe. I was so excited about how holy and how in-credibly beautiful the experience of dying was. I like to think death will be like that – with an ultimate surprise after, when, in resurrection, God invites me again to rise. I want to live as one whose last words are: “Thank you! Thank you! Thank you for such an amazing life!’ More so, I want to live as one whose LIFE continually reflects that kind of gratitude – that kind of joy over the gift of each moment and over the in-credible family and friends who have made living worth it. November seems a good month to share this dream. The liturgical calendar begins with the Christian celebration of All Saints’ Day (1 November) when we name aloud the saints of the church who have died in the past twelve months. We will do so in worship on the first Sunday of November. We will hear the names of those of Hillwood Presbyterian Church who have fought the good fight in this life and now enjoy resurrected life in Christ. Then, all will be in-vited to name aloud those of our individual lives who have died in the past twelve months. In this way, we surround ourselves with their faithful witness. In this way, we remember how pre-cious every life is. In this way, we recall with great thanks. Mid-month we will begin to hear of ministry plans for 2018 and the kinds of faith commitments we are asking of each other in order for God to bring to fruition God’s work envisioned for this church. Stewardship Sunday is scheduled for Sunday, 19 November. We will be asking all of us to make a financial commitment by that day. It might be good to begin counting your bless-ings now so that when the pledge card arrives in the mail, you readily will be filled with grati-tude to God for the amazing life you have experienced through the ministry of Hillwood PC. Making a financial pledge to a congregation really is returning our thanks to God. It’s an op-portunity to invest in making a difference in each other’s’ lives. It is ensuring that those beyond this church’s membership (like the children, parents, and staff of Playcare, and others in the sur-rounding community too) also experience a positive difference in their lives because of the gifts we give. While we are at it, I invite us to consider the time and talents we also have for God’s work through this congregation. In our Pathway to Renewal study this summer, we were reminded that church renewal is about the spiritual renewal of every member of the church. It is about each of us re-committing to growing in our love of and response to God. We renew as we open our lives a little bit wider to God – to trusting in God’s grace, to living as those who are free through Christ, to re-aligning our days and nights according to the Spirit of God nudging us along. I invite you to join in the path of renewal – gratefully opening to God renewing you A full month lies ahead. I pray it will be a time when all voices join proclaiming: “Thank you! Thank you! Thank you, God, for such an amazing life!” Blessings for this month of gratitude!

PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN Our Study guide for the 2027-2028 is titled “Cloud of Witnesses’”. In nine lessons, author Melissa Bane Sevier invites us to explore major themes found in Hebrews, relate these themes to other parts of our faith tradition, and tie them together with the overarching motif of com-munity.

Lesson Three titled (In Community with the Living Word) points out that Hebrews describes God’s word as both living and active. God’s word challenges, supports, and

encourages us to look inward and live the most faithful lives we can. The scriptures for this lesson are Hebrews 1:1-3a; Genesis 1:1-5:1; Ezekiel 37:1-14; John 1:1-5, 14;Hebrews 4:12-13.

If anyone wants to join us this month; we are meeting on Tuesday November 14th in the Church library at 10:00 am. Mary Allen will host and Cynthia Palmer will lead the discussion.
