THE SANSTHA
Konkan Education Society’s Alibag, Raigad is a leading and one of the oldest
education institution is Konkan region and in Maharashtra, which has been received Adarsha
Shikshan Sanstha Award by Government of Maharashtra for remarkable work in education
and social field in the Year 2002-2003
Colaba Students Association established on 1st January 1917 with the objective to
avail the facility of education, The Association started the first school at Roha on 14th
November 1917. This association was named as Konkan Education Society on 26th May
1718. The Society lighted the lamp of education at the places like Panvel, Alibag, Poynad,
Revdanda, etc.
In continuation of the march of the spreading the education, the society celebrated
“Silver Jubilee” Year on 18th December 1944 in the auspicious presence of the great
educationist Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan.
In 1977, Advocate Datta Patil became the Chairman of Konkan Education Society.
Keeping in the mind the objectives of society to spread the light of education in three
Districts in the Konkan region, i. e. Raigad, Sindhudurg and Thane has established 2 Primary
School, 21 aided Secondary School, 12 unaided Secondary, 10 Secondary School with Junior
College, 3 Senior College, 2 Medical College, 1 Engineering and D.Ed. College each and 5
institutes with minimum competency vocational courses.
THE COLLEGE
‘Roha’ was a small town with a population of 7,000 to 8,000 having M.I.D.C. Area in
1982. Our Society’s Junior college was already working since 1975 but there was no
opportunity to students for higher education after passing 12th Std. around 50k.m. areas. It
was not possible for economically weaker and poor students to take higher Education.
Principal S.R. Mehendale of Mehendale High School and Junior College realized this need of
higher education and so he along with Shri. Madhuanna Gangal forward a proposal of
establishing senior college before honourable chairman of Konkan Education Society . He
immediately accepted & implemented the proposal.
In July 1983, the college was started on non-grant basis in the premises of Mehendale
High School with Commerce faculty with just 40 students.
Konkan Education Society has taken whole hearted initiative and keen interest in
making available the basic infrastructure facility in the form of independent building in good
and fresh environment by investing approximately Rs. 16.00 Lakhs. So, we were in a position
to shift the college in it’s own building in June 1991. In 1993 which was 10th anniversary
year of the college, we have taken one step ahead by adding Arts faculty on no grant basis.
Which was the need and demand of students & parents.
In December 1996, the Arts faculty was named “Sau. Kusumtai Govind Tamhane
Arts College. In the 2002-2003, we construct and extended building with big Conference

Hall on ground floor and Library with Reading Room on the 1st floor. We also provided
separate Gymkhana and Common Rooms for Boys and Girls.
We have strong and effective teaching, learning and evaluation system. In the new
education process, there is a shift of the system of education from teacher centered to student
centered . Our Teachers are using modern teaching aids with number of innovative ideas for
enhancing and challenging the learning potential of the student.
We give equal importance to overall personality development of student by promoting
cultural, sports and social aspects of the students. We provide excellent infrastructural and
positive support for improving various skills of students.
During February, 2012 we completed college’s NAAC Re-accreditation process and
National Assessment and Accreditation Council ( NAAC ), the autonomous body of
University Grant Commission (UGC) has awarded us ‘B’ Grade with CGPA 2.62 .
In the Academic Year 2012-13, the college has been honoured with “Best College
Award 2011-12” by University of Mumbai. This encouraged our journey towards the
excellence in higher education.
