“A Servant Leader”A leader can often shine brightest in the darkest of times.

Father Vince Conti, S.J., Socius of the Maryland Province and assistant to the Provincial, arrived at Scranton Prep on a terrible day, August 13, 2003. That afternoon, Prep sophomore Dan Gorczyk died during football practice. Father Conti remembered, “I hadn’t even unpacked my bags. I saw Father Keller at dinner and he was heading to the cafeteria to hold Mass for any students who wanted to attend. I asked if I could join him.” At the Mass, Father Conti saw something unexpected. “It was clear that Father Keller was their pastor. I had never conceived of a high school administrator as being a pastor, like a parish priest. It was a tragic day, but an important introduction to the role of president as pastor.”

Father Keller’s title was President. But he was much more – a pastor, a mentor, a leader, a cheerleader, a consoler, an

educator. Most importantly, he would prove to be a visionary and the most transformative President in Scranton Prep’s history.

The roots of Father Keller’s quiet yet powerful leadership style could be seen early in his career. Father Brendan Lally, S.J. first met Father Keller at the Novitiate of St. Isaac Jogues in 1969. “We both entered the Society of Jesus on the same day,” he recounted, “Even as a novice, he demonstrated leadership within the novice community.” Father Keller’s leadership was based in his faith in people, according to Father Lally, “I believe his leadership is so successful because he deeply cares for the students, faculty and staff of the institution. He is a leader who “cares” and does all he can to bring out the best in all members of the community. People trust a leader who cares, even if he has to make challenging decisions.”

That caring was evident in three separate tours of service to Prep, as a scholastic in the 1970’s, as principal in the 1980’s and as president from 1997-2015. Father’s Keller’s singular dedication to Prep

has had a profound influence on the future of the school. As a scholastic he instituted the first underclass retreat program which marked a significant step in introducing Ignatian spirituality into the school’s curriculum.

As principal Father Keller guided the school through a dramatic period of growth in enrollment, in curriculum, and in stature among the community. He also committed the school to a process of thorough evaluation by the United States Department of Education which earned Prep the designation of National Exemplary School.

During his tenure as president, Father Keller has overseen the expansion and transformation of Prep’s campus. In 2000, Prep’s Board of Trustees, following consultation with members of the Prep community, developed a strategic plan for the school. Realizing the need to secure the future and prepare new generations of students for the challenges of a changing world, Father Keller guided Prep on an ambitious, long-range plan to strengthen the school’s facilities in all areas: academics, athletics, and student life.• The St. Robert Bellarmine Theatre and Science wing• a new technology center and language center• the Loyola Athletic Complex • the renovation of every classroom in the school, as well as

the Chapel

• the Saint Francis Xavier Student Center and athletic complex.

“What Prep is physically today is a reflection of Father Keller’s priorities as a leader, “said Monsignor Joseph Quinn, former Chair of Prep’s Board of Trustees, “Athletics and athletes, science, theater, faith, community and gathering. Father Keller would say, ‘Encouragement is oxygen for the soul’ and that’s what he did for people and, ultimately, for Prep. He would encourage people to go beyond what they thought they could do.”

Of course, Father Keller is well known for his understated style. “The joke is that ‘humble Jesuit’ is an oxymoron,” said Monsignor Quinn, “but Father Keller is just that – a humble Jesuit and faithful servant leader.”

Father’s undying commitment to a higher standard has raised over thirty million dollars for these capital projects and the school’s endowment has more than quadrupled. Father Keller is a graduate of Fordham University and the Jesuit Novitiate in Wernersville, PA. He received a master of divinity degree with distinction from the Weston School of Theology. He has shared his educational and administrative strengths by serving on the board of trustees of St. Joseph’s Preparatory School, Gonzaga College High School, the University of Scranton, St. Joseph’s University, and Fairfield University. He has also been a member on search committees for the dean of the Weston School of Theology, for the Academic Vice-President and Provost of the University of Scranton, and for the President of the University of Scranton.

The newest Jesuit saint, Alberto Hurtado, said, “In order to teach it is enough to know something. But to educate one must be something. True education consists in giving oneself a living model, an authentic lesson.”

Father Herbert Keller has embraced these words throughout his priestly ministry by setting an example of a life lived for others through his steadfast faith, inspiring teaching, and vision-oriented leadership. In almost every year of his thirty-two

consecutive years of administration, he has taught an English class. Each summer he has led a group of young people on a service experience to West Virginia or Reading, PA. He has been a faculty leader on several Kairos retreats each year, and he is an avid, omni-present supporter of all student activities.

In 1991, Father Keller left Prep to assume the post of Principal of St. Joseph’s Prep. The Class of 1991’s yearbook contained the following tribute: “He was not just a principal; he was also a fan, a spectator, a teacher, a consoler – a true friend to all in every sense of the word.” Father Keller, through his faith and determination, has led the Prep community to heights that were almost unimaginable 20 years ago. Following the deepest Jesuit tradition, he has lived his life and encouraged countless others to live their lives Ad maiorem Dei gloriam.

Prep’s new 61,000 square foot “Gymnasium and Student Commons” is dedicated. It includes a state-of-the-art gymnasium with a suspended running track, a spacious cafeteria, and a large weight training room.


Over seventy-five artisans and local retailers participated in this year’s annual Galleria, providing much shopping diversi-ty. Everything from holiday decorations to jewelry, specialty baskets, flower arrangements, clothing, accessories, specialty foods, arts and crafts, and also a basket raffle with nearly one hundred enticing entries - all found under one roof.

On Sunday morning nearly 300 parents and children attend-ed Breakfast with Santa. The Scranton Prep a capella group provided a repertoire of Christmas songs that contributed to the holiday ambiance.

In addition to the merchants, the school had its own “Mar-ketplace” showcasing the delectable homemade baking skills of its parents. Everything is made fresh, delivered to the school, and then wrapped and priced by Parents’ Club volunteers. The goods were continually replenished during the weekend as they sold out. Shoppers were also invited to relax and catch their breath while enjoying lunch in the student dining hall for a nominal charge.


Deputy District Attorney Frank P. Castellano Receives Prep Alumni Honor

Frank P. Castellano, Esq.’89 was honored by the Scranton Prep Alumni Board of Governors as the 2014 recipient of the prestigious Rev. T. Donald Rinfret, S.J. Distinguished Alumnus Award. The Rinfret Award is presented annually to a Prep graduate who has brought distinction to the school through service of others, particularly in ways that reflect Prep’s motto: Ad Altiora Natus – born to higher things.

Atty. Castellano obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in History from The University of Scranton in 1993, where he was a cum laude graduate. In 1996, he graduated from Saint Louis University School of Law where in addition to a Juris Doctorate degree he earned a certificate in International Law, studying at the University of Brussels, Belgium as the Dean and Virginia Rusk Fellow of International Law.

Atty. Castellano joined the Lackawanna County District Attorney’s Office in 1996, and currently serves as Chief Pros-ecutor of the Juvenile Division overseeing a staff of attorneys and support personnel specializing in the prosecution of hundreds of juvenile delinquency cases each year. He has held that position since September of 2002, and during that time has handled thousands of cases involving delinquent and dependent children. As one of the founding members of the Lackawanna County Juvenile Treatment Court, he has a broad based knowledge of the effects of drug and alcohol use and abuse by young people and their families. Prior to 2002, he was an Assistant District Attorney in the D.U.I. Unit, specializing in the prosecution of alcohol related crimes, in-cluding homicide by motor vehicle.

He serves as head of the Safe Schools Program overseeing the assignment of Assistant District Attorneys to each school district in Lackawanna County and is assigned as the liaison to Scranton Preparatory School for that program. He also served as supervisor of the District Attorney’s Internship Program, which provides internship opportunities to local college and high school students. Atty. Castellano currently serves as the program director for the Lackawanna County District Attor-ney’s Office Tobacco Compliance Initiative.

Atty. Castellano is an Eagle Scout (1985) and a 1999 graduate of Leadership Lackawanna. He is a member of the Pennsylvania District Attorney’s Association, the Juvenile Prosecutors Net-work, and a past president of the Lackawanna Bar Association Young Lawyers Division. He has also served as an adjunct professor at Keystone College teaching the Federal Rules of Evidence and Constitutional/Criminal Law and currently serves as an adjunct professor at The University of Scranton

teaching Business Law and business related courses in both the undergraduate and graduate programs. Since the fall of 2012 he has specialized in teaching American Business Law to visiting students from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. He is also a certified instructor in the Pennsylvania Act 120 program, teaching at the Lackawanna College Police Academy.

Atty. Castellano’s work with the Juvenile Justice System of Pennsylvania has led him to present on both a state and national level on issues relating to the care, treatment and supervision of children and their families. He has spoken at meetings and conferences in Harrisburg, PA; Las Vegas, NV; San Diego, CA; and Austin, TX; as well as many times in school districts and at community events throughout Lackawanna County. He currently co-chairs the Juvenile Rules Committee and the Criminal Rules Committee for the Lackawanna Bar Association.

Atty. Castellano’s service and commitment to his commu-nity has merited him numerous awards. In May of 2008, Atty. Castellano was honored by the Northeast Pennsylvania Business Journal as one of the outstanding leaders of the year for his volunteer work throughout Lackawanna County. Also that year, he was the recipient of the Child Advocate of the Year Award presented by the Children’s Advocacy Center in Scranton. In 2009, he received the Lackawanna County Dis-trict Attorney’s Office Humanitarian Award for his work with juveniles and their families. In May of 2011, he was awarded the President’s Volunteer Service Award for his work with the American Cancer Society.

In June of 2011, Atty. Castellano was invited to speak at Marywood University for their first Legal Seminar Program to a group of visiting students from the Fatih University in Istanbul, Turkey regarding the American legal system. In April of 2013, he was once again awarded the Child Advocate of the Year Award by the Children’s Advocacy Center in Scranton.

Each year, Atty. Castellano obtains twelve continuing legal education credits to maintain his law license as required by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.

He is married to Cammie Gillette Castellano; they have a daughter, Grace, and reside in Moscow, Pennsylvania.
