Oprah Winfrey show (in a mathematical context)

By Anusha Ramji

• Welcome to the Oprah Winfrey Show! Today our mysterious guest is…(whispers loudly) Who is the mysterious guest? Oh, ok well today’s guest is…

• Me ! The one and only , fruit of a kind , Orange the Orange ! • So tell us O , can I call you O ? Yeah , so tell us O how did your career

in the fruit industry start ?• Well it started out just like all those buds ready to bloom. I , a dainty

little seed fell into the soil , my back broke but yes that’s what happened ! One day it rained cats and dogs , dudes watch where you do your thing !! I got lots of water and grew into a sapling . I grew until my knuckles cracked which is even worse if you are a flower! As I grew I realized I wasn’t gonna be a leafanaire and instead a plain , round , orange orange. There must be some way to be fruitus sorry famous I thought ! Then I had a great idea !

• What was it ??• Umm… Something about…well it was definitely…I think it was…

er………..• You can’t remember why you became famous . Ok that is something

new! So what amazing talent of your’s are you going to display today?

• Um(says to self)I have to be talented ?I know! I’ll teach you about circles !!!!

• Well , that sounds great…• Hey you sit down ! No talking in the class ! Have I made myself

clear?• But you…• No buts. Now sit down you , you , um , vegetable !!Now Circles are…• (Snoring)• Well I can see that people enjoy sleeping but (yells)its not the right

time for it !Ok class time for a little education my style !

• As I was saying ! Now Oranges like myself are shaped like circles . Does anybody know what a circle is ? Wow this crowd is brainless, except for the lovely Math teacher in the back , not you ma’am.

• Anways a Circle is a simple closed curve all of whose points are at the same distance from a given point O in the same plane . The given point O is called the centre of the circle.

• In English please !• Basically this:

The distance around a circle is called its circumference. The circumference of a circle is its perimeter . To measure a circle’s circumference put a string around the edge of the entire circle and mark on the string where it ends. You can measure a sphere’s circumference with a string and a ruler. Wrap the string around the circular object and mark the string where it ends. Measure this string with a ruler .

Fact fileChristopher Columbus brought the first orange seeds and seedlings to the New World on his second voyage in 1493.

• Circles have an interior and exterior and I don’t mean designers ! • Then what ?• You are a dunce ! The interior of a circle contains all the points in the plane whose distance

from the centre is less than the radius . The exterior of a circle contains all the points in a plane whose distance from the centre is greater than the radius .

• I repeat I don’t speak Greek or any other language other than English !• Listen up its basically like a dart board. The x’s mark where the darts have hit.

The darts in the inside of the orange are interior points and the darts outside the circle are exterior points.

A line segment joining any 2 points on the circle is called a chord. The diameter of the circle is it’s longest chord and has to pass through the centre point.

Fact FileAfter chocolate and vanilla, orange is the world's favorite flavor.

• Math is my enemy !• No its not ! There

are much worse enemies like the one and only ….

It’s him !Mwahahahaha! No body can stop me !

Oh yeah ?

Watch this !

Aaaaaaaaaah!

See you later cause you’re next!

Hey everybody! I’m okay except that I’m a semi-circle! What happened to my beautiful round figure well head at least…

A diameter which divides a circle into 2 equal parts Is called a semi-circle. A continuous part of a circle is called an arc and arcs are generally named by two end points and one point lying between them. Sort of like this…

Look at the time let’s rush to the next slide!

Page 6: Anusha Math Orange

The black and red lines one the orange are continuous parts of the circle.

Now let’s look at this…

Major arc

Minor arc

A chord AB of a circle divides the area enclosed by it into two parts which are called segments. The smaller part is called the minor segment and the larger part a major segment. The chord also divides the circumference into two parts. The smaller part is called minor arc because it is less than a semi-circle and the larger part is a major arc because it is greater than a semi-circle.

The part of a circle enclosed by any two radii of the circle is called a sector of the circle .

If two radii are at right angles it’s known as a quadrant. A quadrant is 1/4 of a circle.

<- quadrant of orange/circle

-> sector

I got a cut after that fall. Hay wait maybe my head can help!

A line which intersects or meets the circle at two distinct points is called a secant.

A line which touches the circle at only one point is called a tangent and where the line touches is called the point of contact(poc)

Hey my head seems to have a centre point with lots of circles around it !

Circles which have the same centre are called concentric circles!

When is an orange green? When it's a Valencia! Sometimes warm weather causes the skin to regreen, or reabsorb chlorophyll, giving it a greenish color. But it will still taste great.

Moro oranges are also called blood oranges! But don't worry. That's just because the pulp is bright red. They're really a sweet treat.

Eat oranges and stay young!Oranges are high in antioxidants, which neutralize the effects of free radicals, unstable oxygen molecules in your body, believed to cause aging and some diseases.

I would like to thank - http://www.sunkist.com/kids/facts/oranges.asp , cyberpro-systems.com/images/lightning.gif the bobblehead dudes for lending their circular heads and the knife for coming as a special appearance!

It’s him again!

Gotta Go! Thank you for watching!

Hey come back here! I want my paycheck!!!
