A machine was purchased for $4,200 a year ago, it is depreciated over two years (Strait line method), and it has no trade-in or disposal value At the end of the first year the machine needs to be repaired orvalue. At the end of the first year, the machine needs to be repaired or replaced. Assume threat the purchase price of a new machine is $7,000 and it is expected to last for one year with no trade-in or disposal value. And Old machine repair cost $3,500. Data fordisposal value. Relevant Cost AnalysisRelevant Cost AnalysisSpecial Order decision
A special order decision occurs when a firm has a one-time opportunity to sell a specified quantity of its product or service. The order frequently comes directly from the customer rather than throughorder frequently comes directly from the customer rather than through normal sales or distribution channels. To make the special order decision, managers begin with a cost analysis of the relevant costs for the special order.pAnurak T-Shirts (ATS) , Inc. is a small manufacturer of specialty clothing, primarily T-shirts and sweatshirts with imprinted slogans and brand names. PAPA Inc. has been offered a contract by a local college fraternity for 1,000 T-shirts printed with artwork publicizing a fund-raising event, offers to pay $6.50 for each shirt. ATS normally charges $9.00 for shirts of this type for this size order.ATS has master budget based on expected production of 200,000 T-shirts from an available capacity of 250,000, that expected to be produced in 200 different batches of 1,000 units each. Relevant Cost AnalysisRelevant Cost AnalysisMake, Lease, or Buy Decision
The relevant cost information for the make-or-buy decision is developed in a manner similar to that of the special order decision. The relevant cost information for making the component consists of the short-term costs to g pmanufacture it, ordinarily the variable manufacturing costs, which would be saved if the part is purchased. These costs are compared to the purchase price for the part or component to determine the appropriate decision. Costs that will not change whether the firm makes the part or not are ignoredthat will not change whether the firm makes the part or not are ignored.

The optional to sell a product or service before an intermediate processing step or to add further processing and then sell the product or service for a higher price. The additional processing might add features of functionality to a g p p g g yproduct or add flexibility or quality to a service.ATS example, assume that a piece of equipment used to print its T-shirts has malfunctioned, and 400 shirt are not of acceptable quality because some colors are missing or faded ATS can sell the defective shirts to outlet stores at a greatly reducedmissing or faded. ATS can sell the defective shirts to outlet stores at a greatly reduced price (4.50) or can run them trough the printing machine again. A seconds run will produce a salable shirt in most cases. The cost to run them trough the printer a second time are for the ink, supplies, and labor totaling 1.80 per shirt, plus the setup, inspection and materials-handling costs for a batch of productinspection, and materials handling costs for a batch of product.
