Higher Education System in India

• India is set to become one of the youngest nations in the world by 2030, with around 140 million people expected to be in the college-age group.

• India has the third largest higher education system in the world in terms of size and its diversity and largest in the world in terms of number of educational institutions*.

• Framework of higher education in India is complex. It includes various type of institutions like universities, colleges, institutes of national importance, polytechnics etc.

• Universities are also of different types like Central universities, State universities, Deemed universities (aided and unaided) and Private universities.

Education Sector in India

• Number of colleges in India reached 39,931in FY19.

• Number of universities in India reached 967in FY21 (as of December 2020).

• India had 37.4 million students enrolled inhigher education in FY19.

• Gross Enrolment Ratio in higher educationreached 26.3% in FY19.

• In 2020-21, there were 9,700 total AICTEapproved institutes.

Online Education in India

• The country has become the second largest market for E-learning after the US.

• The sector is expected to reach US$ 1.96 billion by 2021 with around 9.5 million users.

• In India, the online education market is forecast to reach ~US$ 8.6 billion by 2026.

ChallengeAre Students Job Ready?

• Statistics show that almost 60 % of allengineering graduates do not get jobs inindustry right after their graduation*.

• According to NASSCOM, only 10%graduates with non-specialized degreesare considered employable by leadingcompanies.

• This implicates skill gaps and thatstudents are not readily employable forthe industries.

• Placement outcomes in India also dropsignificantly as we move away from thetop institutes.

• Students miss methodological, professional, social and personal competencies related to self-reliant problem-solving and interdisciplinary, out-of-the-box thinking.

• The methodological competencies, which mainly refer to the transfer of theoretical knowledge into real application-based problems, is generally seen more important than other competencies.

Challenges: University Analysis

• Lack of Industry orientation – the essence of the system still follows examination based evaluation processes and not project based assessments

• Rigidity – Since all educational institutions are under the ambit of UGC regulations the process of re-evaluation of course content becomes non-flexible

• Lack of industry experience of the teachers themselves

• Lack of attention towards pure sciences

Majority of students seek Internship Opportunities

• The survey reports that about 88% of students are willing to take up internship opportunities.

• This gives a clear impression that students are keen to upgrade their skills as per the industry demands and want to fill in the knowledge gap that might have been created due to the college’s dated curriculum.

Internships-Academia-industry Interface

• Internships are significant for Academia-Industry interface in educational institutes.

• Internships give students the opportunity to go beyond books to get experience in the actual work sphere.

• They are able to experience industry-based projects, case studies and research work.

• Students also benefit through internships by getting good placements.

• ANUBHAV-The Psychology Internship Cell was

established on 28th Aug 2018 in the Department of

Psychology, Keshav Mahavidyalaya, Delhi.

• The purpose of this cell is to help students gain

experience across various disciplines through

internships and placements.

• It aims to bridge the academia industry gap by forming

a liaison between students and various organizations.

• The launch of the Cell saw the attendance of 20 organizations who interacted with the students.

• The Internship Cell operates round the year to facilitate contacts between companies

and graduates.

• On invitation, many reputed industries visit the institute to conduct workshops,

seminars and training programs.

• The Internship Cell organizes career guidance programs for all students starting from

first year to final year in order to enhance the skill set of students and prepare them

for the corporate world.

SOME OF THE WORKSHOPS HELD

• However, The Internship Cell recognizes that all students graduating from

the department are not going to be placed .

• Hence, a day-long workshop was organized, titled LEVEL 1 BASIC

COURSE: STARTUP LAUNCHPAD “THE NEXT THING” on 7th

September 2018.

• Students of Psychology from various colleges of University of Delhi

participated in the workshop and learnt about how to build their own start-

ups.

• The important aspect of the workshop was that the resource person was

an alumni of the department who was running his own start-up.6/26/2021 21

• The aim of this workshop was for the participants to:

1. Understand how to generate, identify and select business ideas.

2. Acquire relevant knowledge and skills to start and successfully manage an

enterprise or a business venture.

3. Understand the preparation of a specific, comprehensive business plan tailored to

each individual’s entrepreneurial needs.

4. Understand the linkages between the entrepreneur and all the resources and

services needed to successfully launch and sustain an enterprise.

5. Understand saving as a life skill for individual livelihood and business

improvement.

• An extensive 3-Day Counselling Skills Training Program was also organized on 17th, 21st and 28th January 2019.

• The certified program comprising of 12 workshops of 90 minutes each was meant to provide opportunities to students to explore themselves as psychology professionals as well as develop skills through situational exercises, role plays, and introspection guided by the training team of practising counsellors and psychologists.

• The workshop not only imparted skills, a time gap between the workshops was designed for the students to practice what they had learnt during the workshops.

• The aim of this extensive experiential course was to bridge the gap between the theoretical learning of counseling psychology as a subject and its application in real world settings.

• The course offered a hands-on training on various tools required in a professional counseling setup.

• The program provided an opportunity to students to explore themselves as psychology professionals and harness their skills through the firsthand experience of the team of practicing counselors and psychologists.

• On 22nd-23rd August 2019, the Internship Cell hosted a workshop on “TRANSACTIONAL ANALYSIS WITH GESTALT WORK” .

• The workshop was well attended by the students from Keshav Mahavidyalaya as well as from other colleges.

• The aim of these workshops was to give an opportunity to the students to learn these skills hands-on.

ART & MOVEMENT THERAPY

The participants learned about Art therapy and Movement therapy in a fun way. The entire workshop was experiential with everyone participating in all the activities. Very little focus was on theory per se, but on the application of the concepts associated with these two important forms of therapy.

PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTS

• The workshops on Tools to Assess Intelligence and Rorschach Inkblot Test were conducted on 13th and 14th of Feb 2020.

• The resource persons were very eminent professionals from the field of mental health and have spent a lifetime in psychological assessment.

• The participants got an exposure to the way in which the tools they learn as part of their curriculum are used in the clinical field.

• They also got a window into the various tools for assessing intellectual abilities of children and adults.

• On 14th, the participants also got an intensive understanding of the conduction and evaluation of the very well known projective

technique – The Rorschach Inkblot Test.

OBJECTIVES OF THE INTERNSHIP CELL

● To imbibe technical, behavioral and career-related skills to the students.

● To provide them with better platforms for internships and placements by

connecting them to reputed firms and industrial establishments.

the classroom.

● Create conditions conducive to the quest for knowledge and its applicability on
