Stan Hyland wins Sol Tax Dis�nguished Service Award.
Dr. Hyland will be honored with the 2016 SfAA Sol Tax
Award for excep�onal contribu�ons in: 1) leadership in
SfAA organiza�onal structure and policy; 2) central roles in
communica�on with other disciplines or sub-disciplines;
3) edi�ng and publishing; 4) developing applied anthropol-
ogy curricula; 5) formula�ng ethical standards of prac�ce;
and 6) innova�ve ac�vi�es that promote the goals of the
SfAA and the field of applied anthropology . Dr. Hyland will
offer brief reflec�ons on his career of exemplary service at
the Society for Applied Anthropology Annual Mee�ng
Awards Ceremony in Vancouver, Canada on April 1, 2016.
Ruthbeth Finerman elected to SfAA Board of Directors.
Congratula�ons to Dr. Finerman on her elec�on. Her 3-
year term of office will begin at the SfAA Mee�ng in Van-
couver, Canada, March 29-April 3, 2016.
Congratula�ons to Dr. Micah Trapp, who won an Engaged
Learning Fellowship for 2015-16 to incorporate engaged
scholarship projects into ethnographic methods training.

instructor Dr. Barton earned his
Ph.D. at Temple in 2014 and
joined the faculty in Fall 2015.

Dr. Stan Hyland Re�res. The department honored Stan’s
official re�rement in Fall 2015. Stan joined the faculty in
1977 aDer earning his Ph.D. at U Illinois, Urbana.
In almost 40 years at UofM
Stan taught nearly every MA
candidate and mentored
dozens of students; virtually
all have gone on to success-
ful prac��oner careers. Stan
shaped broad recogni�on
for applied anthropology in
the Mid-South by “seeding”
numerous governmental
en��es, medical centers,
businesses, grassroots agen-
cies and non-profits with
students and alumni, and fostering genera�ons of graduates
who transi�on into professionals who train and mentor.
Stan strengthened the department’s na�onal reputa�on as
Chair of Anthropology, and then as Director of the School of
Urban Affairs and Public Policy, where he spurred interdisci-
plinary collabora�ons in both teaching and engaged scholar-
ship, and mentored genera�ons of faculty.
Among his many achievements, Stan led a seminar at the
School of American Research and edited a follow-up 2005
book on Community Building in the Twenty-First Century. He
published almost 3 dozen ar�cles, secured over $1 million in
research funding, and served on the Editorial Board of Hu-
man Organiza�on. Stan won the 2016 Sol Tax Dis�nguished
Service Award, and he’s been honored with the AAA Solon T.
Kimball Award for Public & Applied Anthropology, SfAA Prax-
is Award, and two dozen other pres�gious community and
university awards. These include the Unsung Neighborhood
Hero, Harold Love Outstanding Community Involvement,
Meritorious Faculty, Excellence in Engaged Scholarship,
Faudree Profes-
sorship, Dis�n-
guished Teach-
ing, and Superi-
or Performance
in University
Research
Awards.

Congratula�ons to Dr. Robert Connolly for co-edi�ng an
August 2015 volume of Advances in Archaeological Prac�ce
on “Co-crea�on and Public Archaeology.” View the content

Engaged Scholarship Research Grant to support his work.
Congratula�ons to Dr. Keri Brondo, who secured funding
from ALSAC/St. Jude for graduate students interested in
business and design anthropology. Dr. Brondo also re-
ceived engaged scholarship research and travel awards.
