    Anthropology

    Anthropology comes from two Greek words,anthropos meaning humankind and logosmeaning the study of.

    Anthropology is the study of the humans in theenvironment.

    Four branches of anthropology are physicalanthropology, archeology, linguistics, and culturalanthropology.

    Anthropology is one of the three behavioralsciences.

    What are the other two behavioral sciences?

    Psychology and Sociology

    What is Physical Anthropology?

    Physical Anthropology is a branch of

    anthropology; the study of human biological

    nature, heredity, and evolution.

    Physical Anthropology is based on theory.

    Fun Fact:

    Charles Darwin, a naturalist

    who came up with the theory

    of evolution.

    Two Theories of Human

    DevelopmentCREATIONISM:

    A theory holding that the

    various forms of life and

    the world were created by

    God.

    EVOLUTION:

    The idea that different

    species developed, one

    from another, over

    long periods of time.

    Physical Anthropology studies the theory of evolution.

    There are 100s of creation theories, stories, and explanations.

    What is Archeology?

    Archeology is a branch of anthropology that

    attempts to find out what life was like in the

    past by examining things left behind by the

    people of a culture.

    An archeologist is a scientist who uses

    research methods, grid systems, excavation,

    and technology.Note:

    We will learn more about archeology later in this unit!

    What is Linguistics?

    Linguistics is a branch of anthropology that

    studies language and the importance of a

    language within a culture.Note:

    We will learn more about linguistics and language later in this unit!

    What is Cultural Anthropology?

    Cultural Anthropology is the study of how

    people in other societies live; and the effects

    that environments have on their life styles.

    In other words, cultural anthropology studies

    the main components of CULTURE (the entire

    way a society lives).

    Components of CULTURE

    Cultural components include the following:

    Customs: the usual way of acting. Example knocking

    before entering a room.

    Values: ideals that people feel are important (eitherpositive or negative). Example I value education.

    Social Institutions: parts of society that work to socialize

    people. Examples in education, government, families,

    economics, and religion. Attitudes: way a group feels about a topic. Example

    Most cultures feel that they do things is the right way and others

    are weird.

    Components of CULTURE

    Art includes music, sculpture, paintings,

    architecture, literature, etc.

    Language signs and symbols used for

    communications.

    Tradition long-established way of thinking or

    acting. Example fireworks on the 4th of July.

    For Monday, bring in an object from home.

    We will use your object and others to discuss

    components of American culture.
