8th March, 2017 to 14th March, 2017 : CSI WEEKDJ-CSI conducted a series of technical workshops over the span of a week in March2017 at the 2nd floor Advanced Computing Lab. Commencing from 8th March, 2017and ending on 14th March, 2017, this series of workshops was collectively named“CSI WEEK” and saw packed classrooms throughout. With special discounts for itsmembers and enticing offers for non-members, the workshops conducted were asfollows:

8th March, 2017 - Databases using SQL:CSI week started off on 8th March, 2017 to a packed house. This introductoryworkshop on “Databases using SQL” was taught by Zaid Merchant, the chairpersonof DJ-CSI.Every application, irrespective of it being mobile based or web based, requires adatabase. SQL is an open source database management language that can be usedwith programming languages like Java, Python and PHP to create and managedatabases. Starting with basics of data definition language (DDL) and datamanipulation language (DML), the attendees of this workshop learnt how to create adatabase, insert data in the tables and also learnt how to update and alter a tablecontained in a database. Reaching higher levels of complexity, the participants alsolearnt about SQL joins and integrity constraints such as primary key, foreign key, nulland unique. With volunteers solving errors on the go, the participants received athorough learning experience. The students acknowledged the efforts of theinstructor to provide a good knowledge base of SQL keeping in mind the timeconstraints for the workshop.

The importance and necessity of data structures including stacks, queues and binarysearch trees was also well explained. At the end of the workshop, applications ofthese data structures were discussed so that students could understand thesignificance of data structures. By the end of this two day workshop, students notonly learnt a new, simple yet powerful language but also discovered how toimplement it to solve real life problems.

14th March, 2017 - Web development using Bootstrap:After many house-full workshops, it was finally time for our last event of CSI WEEK,the “Web development using Bootstrap” workshop, which aimed to lay thefoundation for web development for the student attendees. The workshopintroduced the concepts of HTML, CSS and Bootstrap and took place on 14th March,2017. The lead speaker and instructor for the event was Akshen Kadakia, thevice-chairperson (technical) of DJ-CSI. The workshop started with a basic explanationof HTML and a description of its features. The students followed Akshen as he tookthem through the basics of HTML including the header, para and div tags amongothers. Next, the workshop moved towards styling with Cascading Style Sheets orCSS. Firstly, Akshen explained styling within the HTML tags and then proceeded toseparate out the CSS rules into their own CSS file. Lastly, Bootstrap was introducedto the students and a pre-built example is used to explain how Bootstrap themes canbe quickly edited and modified for personal use instead of creating a web page fromscratch. This would be very crucial in situations such as a time based hackathon andstudents were informed of the widespread advantages of Bootstrap.
