CORE VALUES

To share the Singapore Story and inspire a desire to contribute to Singapore’s future

Compassion

It is commonly used interchangeably with empathy, altruism, kindnessand love. However, compassion must not be confined to just managing clients and visitors, it is also about treating our own employees compassionately.

Customer Service

We are merely providing basic customer service if we are simply meeting expectations. It is when we go beyond being personable, prompt, efficient, courteous, and reliable, that we are able to delight guests and visitors.

Pride in Work

This is seen as a positive attitude as it celebrates one’s achievements and promotes self-worth or self-esteem. When you have pride in what you organise, plan, write, train and guide, then you will be able to perform exceedingly well and with a lot more passion.

Professionalism

Being professional is also about wanting to excel in whatever we undertake to do. When we do things right and well the first time, every time and all the time, then we are indeed displaying the highest level of professionalism.

Honesty & Integrity

When we take personal responsibility for our actions, we are indeed displaying honesty and integrity. It is only when we have strong ethical behaviour that we can stay true to the spirit of corporate governance and we can all sleep well at night, knowing that our conscience is crystal clear.

Teamwork

Understanding teamwork is essential in order to achieve the goals and successes that every business hopes to see. Working together as a team means that several individual people have to come together and function as one solid unit. It involves taking the various talents and skills that each team member contributes and combining them into one successful effort.

FY13 Achievements

FY13 had been a fruitful year for SDC. The programmes and new initiatives carried out during the workyear had helped to sustain high engagement numbers and open new channels for SDC to reach out to different target audiences; in particular the students and youths. Overall customer satisfaction and NE Experience amongst SDC’s visitors continued to remain high at 85% and above.

SDC introduced free admission for Singapore citizens and permanent residents on 18 May 2013. This was in support of the Ministry of Culture, Community & Youth’s (MCCY) initiative to make museums and heritage institutions more accessible. Being a part of this whole-of-government initiative has furthered SDC’s mission and allowed more Singaporeans to gain a deeper understanding of the Singapore Story and develop a stronger sense of national identity. With this initiative, our walk-in visitorship in FY13 doubled from the previous year.

SDC has worked hard to strengthen our presence in the public domain. Our “Shiok to be Singaporean” special exhibition for National Day 2013 appealed to a broad spectrum of society. On request, parts of the exhibition were replicated and loaned to NTUC’s Downtown East and to Punggol North Constituency for their National Day Observance Ceremony. These efforts have enhanced SDC’s presence and enabled us to extend our reach to residents in the eastern part of Singapore.

Looking Ahead

SDC is constantly reviewing our strategies and programmes to stay relevant and appeal to a new generation of Singaporeans. We place customers at the heart of what we do. SDC has taken the feedback collected from our Customer Satisfaction survey seriously and implemented initiatives to improve visitor

experience. By embracing change and innovation, we will continue to be the leading organisation for National Education in Singapore.

With the new emphasis on Character and Citizenship Education (CCE) by the Ministry of Education (MOE) and to nurture our children to be active citizens in the community, SDC will continue to work closely with MOE’s CCE branch to organise relevant programmes for schools. SDC’s signature event YOUTHphoria continues to gain traction with our youth. Since the inception of YOUTHphoria in 2010, more educational institutions have come on board as they see YOUTHphoria as a good platform to showcase and celebrate the youthful energy and creative talent of their students, practise the life skills which they have acquired in their course of study and also as an opportunity to demonstrate Values-In-Action.

SDC has developed strong partnerships with national and diplomatic agencies, as well as educational institutions and corporations. SDC will continue to pursue a wider range of collaborative engagements to bring together like-minded organisations to further our common objectives in National Education.

Appreciation

I have been impressed with the professionalism and commitment of the staff in SDC, and touched by their passion and zeal in sharing the Singapore Story. I would like to thank the Board members for their counsel and support, and commend the management and staff for their dedication and hard work.

Key Achievements in 2013

FY13 was a busy year for all of us as several educational initiatives and special exhibitions were rolled out.

The first was Total Defence Day’s ‘Triumph over our Trials’ Special Exhibition officiated by Mr Chan Chun Sing (Minister for Social and Family Development and Second Minister for Defence) in February. This thought-provoking exhibition was very well received with its immersive re-creation of the 2004 Nicoll Highway Collapse and its portrayal of how Singapore overcame crises through the Total Defence framework.

In April, we had the ‘The World in Singapore’ Special Exhibition as we shared with visitors how friendships are forged and why they are so crucial for a tiny red dot like ours. Launched by Ms Indranee Rajah (Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Law and Ministry of Education), this exhibition also featured the Embassy Showcase. Into its third year, this Showcase was a further testament of the good working relationships we have with the various Embassies and High Commissions in Singapore.

SDC celebrated our nation’s 48th birthday with the ‘Shiok to be Singaporean’ Special Exhibition. This exhibition was warmly received as many could relate to the fun and cool facts shared about our nation and her people.

Our year-end Special Exhibition ‘Hope. Heart. Home’, launched by Mr Inderjit Singh (CEO of Infiniti Solutions Pte Ltd and MP for Ang Mo Kio GRC), was a culmination of the efforts between SDC and over 30 companies, agencies and individuals. This photo-journalistic exhibition explored our future, our state of happiness, giving back to the community and what home means to us. The finals of the Youth Entrepreneurs Competition (YEC) was also held together with this special exhibition and a total of S$12,835 was raised for charity. This year, we also organised an inaugural YEC Seminar for YEC semi-finalists to gain first hand entrepreneurship insights from successful entrepreneurs. YEC is a demonstration of SDC’s Corporate Social Responsibility and we hope to create the awareness for social care as well as encourage active citizenry in our youths.

Partnership

To maintain our lead as a key National Education (NE) Centre, we will need to cement SDC’s position as “The Preferred NE Partner”, continue to collaborate and work

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’SMESSAGE closely with like-minded partners and create platforms to

make SDC “Hip and Happening” for our youths.

The road ahead is indeed challenging. SDC has realigned our efforts and channelled resources to also engage Post-Secondary students. We have already made some inroads in our efforts to reach out to this segment, through the first Travelling Exhibition series. Since July 2013, our ‘Design Think Tank’, ‘Shiok to be Singaporean!’, ‘SG Tidbits 365’ and ‘Hope. Heart. Home’ travelling exhibitions have travelled to NTU, NUS University Town and UniSIM and will continue to travel to ITEs and Polytechnics in 2014.

Other partnerships with the Post-Secondary Educational Institutes include Singapore Polytechnic, whose students are helping to develop Paintball games, while Temasek Polytechnic students will be working on and producing short films for our iWERKS Theatre.

Strengthening our Commitment

The success of what we do lies very much with our people. Their dedication and commitment are our true competitive edge.

14 of our staff received the Excellent Service Award (EXSA) presented by the Association of Singapore Attractions and SPRING Singapore this year. The EXSA Award recognises individuals who have delivered quality service in the industry.

SDC also achieved another milestone in the organisational excellence front. We were awarded the Minister for Defence Award (MiDAS) of the Total Defence Awards 2013. As a recipient of MiDAS, it is commendable that our organisation has taken an advocate role on national defence for other employers to emulate.

We will continue to invest in our staff through training and developmental programmes and provide them with advancement opportunities.

I would like to thank our staff who have contributed to the strong progress we have made over the past 12 months. Our staff are indeed the bedrock of SDC’s success. With their professionalism, dedication, energy and commitment to our goals, I am confident that we can soar to greater heights.

SPECIAL EVENTS & EXHIBITIONSSpecial Exhibition – Commemorating 30 years of Total Defence

ON GUARD

This SDC exhibition was created in commemoration of 30 years of Total Defence. It featured Total Defence as a national defence strategy as well as shared its role in helping Singapore overcome national challenges. One of the key highlights of the exhibition was a media piece which featured what youth are doing to support Total Defence. The exhibition also included messages on how Total Defence is part of our life and how we can all play a part to support it, adding to the current conversation of what Total Defence means, and how the youth can play a more active role in Total Defence.

The exhibition adopted experiential and thought-provoking visuals by employing a range of textures, light, sounds and multimedia with a strong presentation of messages to create an emotional connection with the visitors.

HOPE HEART HOME

This photo-journalistic exhibition featured three distinct parts that explored Singaporeans’ “Hope” for our future, “Heart” which touched on our state of happiness and giving back to the community, and what a “Home” meant to us.

The intent of this exhibition was to give Singaporeans, particularly our youth, opportunities to actively think and discuss issues they currently face, and the future that they would like Singapore to be. It shared raw feelings, insightful thoughts, anxieties, hopes, fears and challenges, as well as our youth’s aspirations and inspirations for Singapore’s future.

This exhibition also provided a platform for Singaporeans to consider a collective need to play a meaningful role in shaping the future of Singapore, our HOME.

“Hope Heart Home” was launched on 26 October 2013 by Mr Inderjit Singh, CEO of Infiniti Solutions Pte Ltd and MP for Ang Mo Kio GRC, in SDC.

School Engagement20 I 32

SCHOOLENGAGEMENTThis year, SDC embarked on a timely review of her education and outreach programmes, in order to improve her offerings so as to stay competitive. A two-pronged approach was adopted to help consolidate her role as “The Preferred NE Partner”, being the only Learning Journey venue which covers all the five pillars of Total Defence. It also hopes to create an authentic learning environment through key strategies such as strengthening SDC’s core programmes and marketing them as “Uniquely SDC” programmes. These strategies would help to differentiate SDC from her competitors, in order to give schools a compelling reason to choose SDC as their preferred partner.

Outreach Programme: Travelling Exhibitions

1 July 2013 - OngoingA new Travelling Exhibition Series, “Design Think Tank” (DTT) Exhibition was launched in July 2013 as part of SDC’s outreach efforts to Post-Secondary Educational Institutes. Since then, the exhibition has travelled to tertiary institutions such as NTU’s Lee Wee Nam Library and their school of Art, Design and Media Libraries, UniSIM library and NUS UTown. At each venue, SDC worked closely with relevant partners on student engagement activities such as displaying students’ projects, training student guides and organising activities.
