Changing healthcare for

the betterAt Runnymede Healthcare Centre, our story starts with you. It begins the moment you come through our doors as a new patient, arriving with a unique set of needs and challenges on your path to rehabilitation and wellness.

Each new patient represents a fresh opportunity for us to shine as a community Rehab Hospital. Our goal is to provide a quality of care as unique as the patients we treat – whether for rehabilitation or medically complex care. And we look to excel in every relationship – by addressing the needs of patients and their families, and supporting our staff and key healthcare partners.

We’re part of a bigger story too. This is a transformative time for our entire hospital as we help build the foundation for the next generation of healthcare in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). We know change is inevitable but one thing will always remain the same: People come first at Runnymede, and at the core of our commitment is you.

Although we’ve earned our reputation as a leading hospital for rehabilitation and medically complex care, we continue to watch for emerging trends that may drive future needs. The healthcare system is changing at an unprecedented rate as wait times in acute care hospitals continue to spiral. Through all this, we see an accelerating demand for the kind of services Runnymede offers.

We also see the potential to do much more. This year, we are exploring a fresh mandate to launch outpatient services along with plans to construct an all-important new infrastructure for long-term care.

In a time of major change, we stand ready to prove that Runnymede is more than up to the challenge. Not only can we positively impact the lives of our patients, we can also meaningfully serve the changing needs of our community and ultimately benefit the greater healthcare system itself.

Delivering change at every

touchpoint

processes and planning at Runnymede. We will continue to play an enhanced leadership role in system integration and community-based care as we evolve into a community health hub.

Unwavering commitment to clinical excellence, workforce empowerment and fiscal accountability through our balanced budgets has enabled us to continue to stand out from the crowd and showcase our leading practices and achievements.

We are mindful that our achievements would not be possible without the support, hard work and dedication of many exceptional individuals. Our Board of Directors, chaired by John O’Dwyer, have provided our hospital with their remarkable expertise over the years and have helped us sustain our track record for strong governance principles and fiscal responsibility.

Our Chief of Medical Staff, Dr. Stephen Ng and his equally dedicated team of physicians should be acknowledged for their exceptional medical care. I would also like to recognize the efforts of our Senior Leadership Team, our devoted staff and volunteers, as well as our healthcare partners. Finally, let me sincerely thank our ICARE Gala Co-Chairs John Aquino and Sam Ciccolini for their commitment to philanthropy and support of our hospital and of course, our invaluable donors who make it all possible.

It’s a time of major change, not only for Runnymede, but for the system as a whole. We are here to stand as a leader in our field, providing our patients with the highest quality of care. We’re excited and ready for what comes next, because healthcare is changing and so are we.

Runnymede Healthcare Centre has earned a reputation for providing excellent, innovative patient-centred rehabilitation to those with complex medical needs. Through partnerships with acute care hospitals we are an important member of the healthcare system, providing our patients with the right care in the right place at the right time.

Runnymede has entered into various collaborative agreements with acute care partners to improve access to rehabilitation programs and services for patients. Since these partnerships were formed, our hospital has helped patients to regain the skills, mobility and independence they need to return home. This year alone we have discharged approximately 600 patients back into the community.

One example is our Innovative Journey for Stroke Recovery program that seeks to optimize the rehabilitation potential of patients who have suffered a severe stroke. We admit patients from our acute care partner into our Low Tolerance Long Duration Rehabilitation (LTLD Rehab) program. This provides a slower-paced rehabilitation environment as patients increase their tolerance, working towards the higher intensity rehabilitation offered in acute care.

Our reputation for providing rehabilitation has led to our new designation as a Rehab Hospital from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and the Toronto Central Local Health Integration Network. This designation enables us to categorize 70 of our beds as active rehab beds and it is a major turning point for Runnymede. Through this, we will further intensify our focus on rehabilitation, medically complex and short stay programs.

The hospital’s Strategic Plan: Vision 2020 has placed patients and their families at the forefront. Patient-centred care and the patient experience are now the driving force behind decision-making

Runnymede continues to integrate a patient-centred approach throughout the hospital in keeping with the you first pillar of our Strategic Plan: Vision 2020/Redefining Possible. We strive to maintain the highest levels of quality and safety by ensuring service excellence in every department and at every touchpoint. We also make sure our staff has all the support they need to deliver an exceptional patient experience.

Our you first strategic direction is now being demonstrated in real-time with our Quality Counts Survey – a way for us to get a quicker read on patient satisfaction. We introduced this survey in 2016 as an initial check-in with patients timed two weeks after admission. It gives us the opportunity to make changes to their care right from the get-go, as we use the survey results to more closely identify the individual needs of our patients.

This holistic approach forms the basis of our Quality Improvement Plan, a guiding document that outlines our commitment to quality, safety and the patient experience. The plan sets out a series of key improvement initiatives for each year, and in 2016-17, many of our targets were either met or exceeded. There are some impressive highlights to share: For example, Runnymede successfully recorded the highest vaccination rate for staff in any Toronto hospital during the flu season with 89% of staff rolling up their sleeves for an inoculation. This type of precaution is especially important considering hospital patients with existing health conditions face a greater risk of being seriously affected by the flu than otherwise healthy individuals.

A model of care revolving around our patients

Runnymede is on the frontier of testing innovative technologies, such as virtual reality (VR) to support patient therapy.

We’re constantly expanding and diversifying our programs and services to enhance the patient experience with everything from live entertainment, events and intergenerational programming to patient therapy offered six days a week.

This past year has featured a number of other notable program highlights:

We introduced boundary-free visiting with no restrictions on visiting hours so loved ones can visit the hospital whenever they wish. For families living far away, we can put them in touch with patients through video calls.

In response to patient feedback, we have introduced both specialized and expanded patient meal options, with opportunities to dine with patients and cater special events for patients during their stay at the hospital.

In-depthstaff training is an integral part of our system of care.

The inside story at Runnymede starts with our dedication to staff and their experience – providing them with the professional development and support they need to develop and perform at their best.

Education plays a key part in our commitment to our staff and we are actively rolling out an award-winning online education tool to further their professional development. This has hospital-wide application in everything from nursing to corporate training and plays a vital role in keeping staff on the leading edge of their professional practice.

On a parallel front, we also support staff through formal and informal mentorship. Our senior executive team has introduced a series of regular touchpoints in response to staff feedback to discuss opportunities for growth, development and the personal goals for each member of their team. The aim is to enhance the staff experience by listening closely to their feedback and encouraging a culture of quality improvement, excellence and empowerment.

Committed to deliver a higher standard of care

The Ontario healthcare system faces a series of ongoing major challenges as it deals with an aging population of medically complex patients. Hospitals are now often filled to capacity due to a rising population of patients designated as Alternate Level of Care (ALC). These patients no longer require the intensive resources of acute care, but due to a shortfall of long-term care and rehabilitation beds in other facilities, cannot be discharged. Unfortunately, this creates a bottleneck with less acute care hospital beds available for the patients who really need them.

This is where Runnymede can seriously make a difference. By admitting ALC patients requiring rehabilitation from our partner hospitals, we help to address urgent patient needs. All while reducing system wait times and freeing up hospital beds for more acute care patients.

Overall, we have proven ourselves to be one of the most cost-efficient hospitals in the Toronto Central Local

Health Integration Network (TC LHIN) despite having one of the highest levels of patient complexity.

Our new designation as a Rehab Hospital is a game-changer – enabling us to now model our programs to better serve ALC patients in particular and the community as a whole.

This past year, we redesigned our model of care to better meet the specific needs of our patients. We started by introducing the new role of advanced practice nurses (APNs) to the interprofessional team with a goal to elevate the overall efficiency of our nurses.

In tandem, we are also helping our registered practical nurses (RPNs) work to their full scope of practice through a combination of education and professional development. Another benefit is that the APNs are also mentoring front line nursing staff so that together they can deliver an enhanced level of care.

This is a pivotal moment in the history of Runnymede, as we rise to meet the healthcare challenges of the future. In 2016, we took a major step forward: Runnymede is now officially reclassified as a Rehab Hospital. This new designation from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care enables us to build on our strengths to significantly expand the level of services and care we can provide.

This is an outstanding opportunity for our entire organization to redefine how we can better serve our community and the greater healthcare system. It opens up all kinds of possibilities for the immediate future – starting with the expansion of our current infrastructure, facilities and services.

Runnymede will now fulfill an enhanced dual role as we continue to provide comprehensive rehabilitation and medically complex care. Given our new focus as a Rehab Hospital, we have dedicated 70 beds in our 206-bed facility as rehabilitation beds.

We’re more than ready to assume this new role. It’s our way to actively help our patients, acute care hospital partners and the community by relieving overflow and rising wait times within the healthcare system.

For Runnymede, this shift enables us to realize our full potential – epitomizing our commitment to deliver the right care, in the right place at the right time. We are determined to come up with bigger solutions to help answer the evolving needs of our patients, partners and community.

Our next chapter begins with our new designation as a

Runnymede is proud to enjoy a strong connection with many local community partners including neighbourhood community centres, schools and seniors groups. We are especially appreciative of the many local volunteers who tirelessly give their time and energy to not only help our patients but the hospital as a whole.

We are always open to new ways to bring the hospital and the community together. An ideal opportunity to do just that is presented by our intergenerational program that we developed in-house through a partnership with a local elementary school. Each month, we bring in a kindergarten class from Humbercrest Public School to engage with our patients and collaborate on special creative projects.

It’s a chance for patients who may not have regular contact with children to participate in a session filled with fun, laughter, enthusiasm and learning. For the kindergarten class, it’s the opportunity to look up and learn from a whole other generation.

The intergenerational program has proven to be a great success. It’s a meaningful way to fill the gap for patients and children alike – an opportunity for sharing that Runnymede is privileged to provide in partnership with our community.

6th ICARE GalaA night of giving

Plans are in the works for our 6th ICARE Gala. We are delighted to share that John Aquino of Bondfield Construction Company Ltd. and Sam Ciccolini of SJC Investments Inc. have signed on again for another year as Co-Chairs and event sponsors. These two gentlemen have now chaired six galas and we are indebted to their heartfelt commitment of time and energy. Without a doubt, our gala is the crowning event of our annual fundraising calendar. The proceeds raised will help us to continue to provide excellent care for our patients, while also supporting our community and valued system partners.

When it comes to giving, our donors are truly the lifeblood of Runnymede. Their generosity helps us at every turn – from the everyday running of the hospital to realizing our ambitious dreams for the future. As we start into an exciting new chapter in our history with our designation as a Rehab Hospital, we must first profoundly thank each and every donor who made this achievement possible.

We accomplish far more by working together with our system partners than could ever be possible alone. Our long-standing partnerships with acute care providers like Trillium Health Partners (THP) are a case in point. We can open up beds for their patients and free up much-needed room in their hospitals for patients requiring acute care. The cumulative effect helps to relieve excessive wait times for patients across the entire healthcare system.

At Runnymede, partnerships can take many forms. Through our hip fracture initiative, we’re seeking to accelerate access to

Low Tolerance Long Duration Rehabilitation (LTLD Rehab) for hip fracture patients post surgery. Working with our system partners, we’re actively reducing the length of stay in acute care with a goal to restore patients’ strength so they can safely return to the community.

We also partner with THP for a unique pilot program called Innovative Journey for Stroke Recovery. This program was created with the goal of enabling patients who have suffered a severe stroke to be admitted into the LTLD Rehab program at Runnymede until they are able to tolerate higher intensity and faster rehabilitation back at THP.

Many partners, one common goal

Virtual reality and the power to heal

Partnerships not only connect us to colleges and universities, they help us leap to the forefront of innovation with leading-edge technologies like virtual reality (VR). Runnymede is currently partnering with OpenLab at the University Health Network in a groundbreaking study to evaluate the positive psychological benefits of VR for people living with dementia.

The VR technology presents the opportunity for patients to experience a virtual world beyond their hospital room with the power to trigger positive memories and emotions. We’re excited to be an active partner in such a landmark research project to enhance the quality of life for patients now and in the future.

Local knowledge

Each year, we partner with local schools by offering co-op placements for students. It’s an opportunity for young people to gain valuable experience working at Runnymede and to acquire skills they can use in the workforce. We’re proud to participate in partnerships that benefit students, our hospital and the community as a whole.

Runnymede continues to be deeply involved in local community life by partnering with community groups and participating in special events.

We are reaching out on many fronts – we’ve recently added a blog to our website to highlight initiatives and achievements and spread awareness of the work we do. And in response to community feedback, we are also developing an in-house newspaper to tell people more about Runnymede and what we have to offer.

In touch with the future

Making a statement

In 2016–17, Runnymede won a number of prestigious industry awards for outstanding marketing and communications:

Power moves

Simply by changing all our lighting to an 80% more energy-efficient alternative, we are now saving 87,000 kilowatts a year: That’s enough to power eight average Canadian households for an entire year. Moving forward, this electrical switch will help us save tens of thousands of dollars while lightening up the energy footprint on our entire community.

Joining the 5% Club

Runnymede once again succeeded in conserving an additional 5% in energy and 5% in gas usage overall. 2016 marks the fourth year that we have qualified for the Greening Health Care 5% Club award, placing us in the upper percentile of sustainable healthcare providers. Better yet, it means that we’re managing to consistently reduce our energy use by at least 5% year after year.

Cleaning our plates

Up until recently, all our solid food waste from patient meals went into landfills. Seeing the opportunity for a more ecological solution, in April 2016 we installed a liquid food composter that turns organic food waste into water that is safe for disposal. It’s a leading-edge waste reduction solution that enables us to fill a gap in our sustainability practices and empty our plates all at the same time.

Bathtub donations

In the summer of 2016, Runnymede teamed up with Partners in Project Green to help relocate six like-new bathtubs that were no longer needed at the hospital. We gave the tubs a new lease on life in two long-term care homes in the GTA. The repurposing enabled us to improve the health of the community and reduce our environmental impact by diverting 900 kg of waste from landfills.

Annual cleanup

Runnymede was proud to participate in an annual neighbourhood cleanup in April 2017. This cleanup is part of the City of Toronto’s Clean Toronto Together campaign. It’s a great way to show our commitment to the community and fulfill our mandate as good corporate citizens.

Taking action on sustainability

Runnymede is involved on a number of fronts with strategic partnerships and initiatives to further our goals as a sustainable healthcare facility.

The past year at Runnymede Healthcare Centre has been a period of tremendous growth as the hospital continues to deliver on its strategic priorities. The objective of the Board of Directors is to provide oversight and ensure accountability. As a Board, improving upon our governance practices is fundamental to our growth and continued success as an organization. Our commitment to financial oversight remains incredibly important and has resulted in Runnymede’s excellent financial standing.

A significant milestone achieved in the past year was our new classification as a Rehab Hospital. This achievement recognizes our commitment to enhancing the types of care we provide to our patients and fosters greater opportunities to cultivate new partnerships and expand upon existing ones.

In recognition of this tremendous year of progress, I would personally like to thank the Board of Directors for their continuous dedication to Runnymede and for offering their valuable time and expertise in supporting the hospital. Without this ongoing support and engagement we would not be where we are today.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to recognize and thank Connie Dejak, our President and Chief Executive Officer, for her exemplary achievements. Connie possesses that rare ability to see the big picture and connect the key pieces that currently shape our organization. Her vision and leadership help us to continually raise the bar on quality and patient care.

We would also like to offer our thanks and sincere appreciation to Dr. Stephen Ng, our Chief of Medical Staff, whose leadership of our physicians consistently ensures the best possible outcomes for our patients.

As we continue to execute on our Strategic Plan: Vision 2020, we are excited for our bigger future.
