Throughout the many colorful pages of this year’s Annual Report, we celebrate our students’ commitment to scholar-ship, character, and service – the three pillars of Rocky Mount Academy’s mis-sion since our doors opened in 1968. In this close-knit community where students, faculty, and families support and care for one another, our students continue to be challenged to find and pursue their passions, maintain a firm commitment to scholarship, serve others with enthusiasm and determi-nation, and lead by example. As we approach our 50th year, we are more energized by the possibilities before us than ever before, and we are extraordi-narily grateful for the generosity and volunteerism of the RMA community that make a daily and lasting difference in the lives of our students.

This year’s Annual Report is a testa-ment to the abundant generosity of the Rocky Mount Academy community as well as the spirit of collaboration and

imagination that are integral to its suc-cess. Our students are growing and thriving in a community that values the traditions that have made us strong while embracing the power of innova-tion that will prepare them for success in the world they live in today and the one they will inherit tomorrow.

We thank and celebrate our teachers, past and present, for their dedication to these students; our alumni for dem-onstrating the value of an RMA educa-tion; and our parents and families for the many ways they support the Rocky Mount Academy community and the extraordinary difference it makes.

Sincerely,Bill and Beth

OUR MISSION:

ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

Rocky Mount Academy students receive an education that is on the cutting EDGE of technology. Engaging the Digital Generation in Education means that students are active participants in their own learning. Each 6th-12th grader receives a Microsoft Surface Pro for home and school use. All teachers and classrooms are equipped with the same device to make every room a technology lab. The EDGE program, which was launched in 2010, has paved the way for innovations in teaching and learning at RMA that will prepare students for college and life as they will experience it in the 21st Century.

The Ann MacPherson Weaver Memorial Scholarship was established in 1986 in memory of a 1984 RMA graduate who succumbed to cancer earlier that year. This competitive scholarship is given each year to a deserving student who best represents the selection criteria and who has never attended any grade of Rocky Mount Academy. Selection criteria are based on these qualities that Ann Weaver possessed: Forceful and unselfish character, intellectual and personal vig-or, academic achievement, leadership in both school and community activities, and positive potential for enriching the environment at Rocky Mount Academy.

Rocky Mount Academy offered a trip to Europe, led by French teacher, Ms. Erin O’Brien. During Spring Break, the students visited the cities of Paris and Nice and dove into the history and culture of the country. Highlighted by visits to world-renowned locales, this trip was surely one its travelers will remember.

Rocky Mount Academy welcomed fourteen stu-dents last fall from Haidian Foreign Language School (Haiwai) in Beijing, China. Haiwai is one of the largest boarding schools in Beijing China totaling 5,000 students in Kindergarten through 12th grade. In the spring of 2017, we welcomed twenty-four into the RMA classrooms. These students quickly became immersed into the classrooms with our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders to experience our “American” culture both academ-ically and socially.

RMA students were given the opportunity to learn Mandarin, taught by the Chinese teachers accom-panying the students, as part of their classroom instruction. RMA parents included the Chinese students in activities outside of school such as birthday parties and playdates. Our students bonded with their Chinese friends and continue to communicate through email. Our Chinese part-nership has been a positive experience and will be an ongoing relationship that we consider to be unique to any school in the world!

BOOSTER CLUB PARENTS ORGANIZATIONThe PO raises funds primarily through one school-wide fundraiser and rebate programs. The funds are used for the benefit and enhancement of Rocky Mount Academy.

There are many opportunities for all parents to become involved in the activities of the PO. The PO welcomes and encourages all parents to participate as the strength of our school is built on the participation of all its members. Some of the areas to volunteer include Buddy Events, Grandparents Day, Fall Festival, and Monster Mash.

Rocky Mount Academy is registered with several rebate programs: Box Tops for Education, Labels for Education, remove--Target (RMA ID# 12692), Harris Teeter (RMA ID# 3270) , Office Depot (RMA ID# 70062315) and AmazonSmile. Help our school earn easy money and products by designating RMA to benefit each time you shop at these stores or by clipping Box Tops and Labels for Education.

For more information, please contact this year’s PO President- Kate Tharin, at [email protected]

The Booster Club’s purpose is to support all aspects of athletics at RMA through the promotion of school spirit, good sportsmanship, and volunteer commitment. The Booster Club raises money through various activities including The Eagle Pass and athletic gear sales, concessions, and sponsorship signage on the two athletic fields.

Last year, the club raised close to $44,000. These funds made it possible to purchase a new short bus, a stage for graduation and banquets, magnetic decals for the gym and concession stands, safety fencing around the softball field, a new soccer backstop net, new basketball gym safety pads, and LED lighting for the gym. The club also hosted the athletic banquet and purchased banners for our senior athletes.

All RMA parents are automatically members of the Booster Club and are invited to attend the meetings. For more information, please contact this year’s Booster Club President, Katherine Johnston, at (252) 903-3943.

The highest honor given by Rocky Mount Academy is in recognition and in honor of an individual who has made a truly tremendous impact in the life and growth of the Academy though his/her time, talents, and re-sources. This year, the honor was bestowed upon:

A planned gift is usually the most important gift an individual makes in a lifetime. Planning your estate ensures that your property will pass to those individu-als and causes for which you care most deeply. Re-membering RMA in your estate plans is a fitting testi-mony to your belief in our mission and has a profound impact by providing resources in perpetuity that con-tinue to strengthen our mission. CHARITABLE BEQUEST

The most popular gift is a simple bequest through a will. You can leave a specific asset, a set amount of money or a percentage of your estate.

CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITYTransfer assets to RMA under which the Academy agrees to pay the donor fixed payments for your life or for the life of your chosen beneficiaries.

CHARITABLE REMAINDER TRUSTAllows a donor to fund a trust with assets such as cash, stocks, or real estate and RMA will provide in-come for the donor.

LIFE INSURANCEDesignate RMA as the beneficiary of a new or exist-ing life insurance policy. Upon transfer of ownership, future premium payments are also tax deductible.

RETIREMENT ASSETSTransfer of an IRA to RMA allows the donor to avoid the income and estate taxes as opposed to family members subject to higher taxation.

REAL ESTATEReal estate such as a residence, vacation home, farm, and land can be donated to RMA, even while you con-tinue to live in or use the property. Capital gains tax might be avoided.

PLANNED GIVING OPPORTUNITIES AT RMA

If you have established a planned gift of which we are not aware, or need additional information about making a planned gift, please contact Katherine Bryant, Director of Development, at (252) 443-4126 or [email protected].

Endowed funds are designed to ensure that money is available in perpetuity to provide RMA students with a comprehensive, balanced, active education. Each year a portion of the accrued interest is used to support programs and initiatives that further RMA’s mission. Gifts to the endowment help to secure the school’s long-term financial stability—and to fund current priorities through ongoing interest generated by the endowment.

You can choose to name a new fund in honor or in memory of a beloved family member or faculty member, creating an enduring legacy.

By establishing an endowed fund or contributing to an existing fund, you can support Rocky Mount Academy in several ways:

- A scholarship fund helps to make an RMA education possible for deserving students.

- An endowed fund can be designated to support a department, technology, athletics, the library, or faculty enrichment.

ONGOING SUPPORT FOR FACULTY, STUDENTS, & PROGRAMS In 2013, Rocky Mount Academy received one of the largest single gifts ever made

to the institution. A challenge gift of $250,000 was made from the family of one of the school’s founders to establish an endowment to honor the legacy and contri-bution of the founders of Rocky Mount Academy. Since matching donations have been secured, we are well on our way to our initial goal of 1.5 million dollars. We are pleased to announce that in August of 2016, we received a second $250,000 gift for the Founders Endowment to be used to match the next $250,000 in gifts.

Total reflects donations and 5 year pledge commitments.

THE FOUNDERS ENDOWMENT

Does tuition cover the full cost of educating a student? As with most independent schools, RMA’s tuition does not cover the total expense of educating our students. Annual Giving contributions are critical to help the Academy close the gap between revenues and operating expenses.

Who should participate? We ask all members of our community—parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty, staff, special friends, lo-cal and national businesses involved with RMA, and foundations—to contribute as generously as possible.

When should I make a gift?Your support is welcome at any time, however, the best time to participate is early in the school year. RMA’s annual campaign starts in August with various appeals and personal solicitations occurring through-out the year. You can pledge an amount and fulfill it by June 30, the end of our fiscal year.

Can I designate my gift? You can choose to make an unrestricted contribu-tion to be used by the Academy for needs we deem most pressing or designate your gift to a particular program, scholarship, or facility that appeals to you.

Are annual giving donations tax deductible?Yes, to the fullest extent of the law. Each donor re-ceives a thank you letter and gift confirmation that serves as a receipt for tax purposes.

How to participate?Check payable to Rocky Mount Academy

Credit or Debit Card

Monthly bank draft

Stocks, bonds, and securities

Secure online gift at www.rmacademy.com/giving

WHAT IS ANNUAL GIVING?Annual giving is Rocky Mount Academy’s ongoing fundraising campaign that directly benefits our students and faculty during each academic year.

What does my gift support?

Innovative and challenging academic, athletic, and arts programs.

Recruitment and retention of highly talented faculty by offering competitive salaries/benefits.

Small class sizes to give faculty the opportunity to give individual attention.

Art supplies, books, and resource materials for the media center.

Professional development opportunities for our dedicated faculty and staff

Enhanced facility upgrades and annual maintenance.

Student scholarships and financial aid.

From July 1, 2017 – June 30, 2018, we ask everyone to help us raise funds for the Academy’s operating expenses and special purposes.

2013Alexandra Thompson Alexandra Thompson, ‘13, recently graduated with a degree in Business Administration, specifically Entrepreneurship, as well as a minor in Latin American Studies and Sport and Entertainment Management. During her sophomore year at USC, she was chosen as a finalist in the entrepreneurship competition The Proving Ground, which is similar to the show Shark Tank. She is Currently working for the SC Department of Commerce’s recycling campaign, Your Bottle Means Jobs, as the marketing intern. Your Bottle Means Jobs is a recycling campaign, an initiative of the Carolinas Plastics Recycling Council, the SC Department of Commerce, the NC Division of Environmental Assistance and Customer Service, and the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control. The YBMJ campaign is focused on increasing the rate of plastic bottle recycling in the Carolinas on the basis that recycling is not only beneficial for the environment, but also the economy. The Carolinas have over 3,500 jobs and more than $240 million in capital investments affiliated with plastic bottle recycling. They have calculated that if every household in the Carolinas recycled 2 more plastic bottles each week, the plastics recycling industry here could create 300 jobs all up and down the value chain. While Carolina households now throw away about 70% of their recyclables, the Carolinas’ plastics recycling industry struggles to collect supply and even imports “trash” (bales of bottles) from Canada and Latin America. If you would like to become involved or know more about the campaign, please contact Alexandra Thompson at [email protected] or (803) 262 0848. Their website is www.yourbottlemeansjobs.com and you can find them on Facebook (/SCDOC.
