Dear Friends of Junior Achievement:
to borrow a line from the popular movie, Field of Dreams, “if you build it they will come,” reflects our sentiment of this exciting year. In 2015, we witnessed a dream become a reality with the construction completion and launch of Mission Fed JA Finance Park. Since then, 8,740 students and adults have had a chance to experience the Finance Park simulation to learn how to plan for career and financial success.
Here is a look at some of our accomplishments during the 2015/2016 school year:
Technology Transformation. JA is revolutionizing our programs by infusing technology and blended learning into student experiences. the Career Center in the Park is a powerful online resource where students and adults can explore and research job and career paths right here in the San Diego economy. the Jobs in the Park database holds 220 jobs, many of them linked to a real San Diego company, so students are aware and familiar with local companies and career opportunities. We are also blending technology into other programs. An example is the new JA Company Program, that allows students to plan and track results of their businesses through online shared digital files.
Turning the “F” into “A”. As you may know, California received an “F” in teaching students financial literacy. JA’s goal is for San Diego County to be the first in California to change this grade from an “F” to an “A.” We are on our way with a new partnership with San Diego unified School District. the collaboration, announced in October, brings all 7,000 10th graders in the District to JA Finance Park. this year, we also have commitments from the Carlsbad, Vista, San Marcos, Sweetwater and Grossmont Districts to enroll students in the program with the goal of reaching 14,000 students. #ImagineSD

We serve K-12 students in 38 school districts throughout San Diego. the majority of our students are from under-served backgrounds. With the popular McGrath Family JA Biztown, and the new Mission Fed JA Finance Park, we saw a 10 percent increase in the number of students we served by impacting 61,863.

The 2016 Mcgrath Family ja bizTown summer camp!
McGrath Family JA BizTown is a 10,000 square foot mini-city where over 15,000 fifth-graders each year discover how to start and run a profitable business. Students are exposed to four weeks of curriculum in the classroom learning how to be a good citizen, how a city’s economy works, how to apply for a job and how to run a successful business. they then put their knowledge into practice by visiting McGrath Family JA Biztown.
Each student works a job at one of 21 life-sized San Diego businesses. the students earn two paychecks, open a bank account, pay taxes, vote, and are challenged to earn a profit in their business. After spending the day running JA Biztown, the students go back to the classroom to analyze profit or loss.

JA BizTown Summer Camp is an exciting week full of fun activities that will jump start your child’s entrepreneurial spirit.
the camp includes “Producers Place” which encourages the campers to think outside the box and envision a new business venture including a full business plan, product and presentation. throughout the week, the campers also prepare to run the much anticipated JA Biztown on the last day of camp!
JA’s elementary school programs are the foundation of its K-12 curricula. Six sequential themes, each with five hands-on activities, as well as an after-school and capstone experience, work to change students’ lives by helping them understand business and economics.

At Mission Fed JA Finance Park Summer Camp, students use tablets and touch-screen technology to explore careers, continuing education, & personal finance. Every day is filled with teambuilding activities, resources & tools to prepare students for a successful future. the summer camp experience includes an off-site visit to Balboa Park and JA Finance Park budgeting simulation.
the middle grade programs build on concepts the students learned in Junior Achievement’s elementary school program and help teens make difficult decisions about how to best prepare for their educational and professional future. the programs supplement standard social studies curricula and develop communication skills that are essential to success in the business world.

JA Economics for Success®Building a life is a complex project, particularly for young people entering the world of work. this program shows students how to earn money, spend wisely within a budget, save and invest, use credit cautiously, and protect their personal finances.
JA It’s My Future®What does it take to be successful in today’s working world? While still in middle school, students explore potential careers, discover ways to plan for and keep a job, and prepare their personal-brand maps to the future.
JA Global Marketplace® – Blended Model Students experience the worldwide interdependence of producers, consumers, and the global workforce as they take on the role of business owners and managers. they analyze international business ethics and the culture, currency, and trade barriers of other countries.
JA AfterSchool® JA It’s My Business!®Can anyone learn to be an entrepreneur? Yes. During this program, students discover the key characteristics of successful entrepreneurs: Believe in yourself, fill a need, know your customer and product, and be creative and innovative. (Also classroom–based.)

Mission Fed JA Finance Park is the first program of its kind in San Diego! Offically
opened in fall 2015, JA Finance Park utilizes the most current technology to teach teens how to make intelligent financial and career decisions that will last a lifetime.
When students come to the Park, they receive a “life situation” and income based upon a real San Diego job they chose in the classroom. Students then have to create a monthly budget and pay for the needs and wants for their avatar family. they have to buy a home, purchase a car, shop for groceries, make investments and save for the future. At the end of the day, students have to meet a monthly budget. they will also have the opportunity to visit our on-site career center to explore real-life job opportunities in San Diego.
As high school students begin to position themselves for their future, there are many unanswered questions about what lies ahead. Junior Achievement’s high school programs help students make informed, intelligent decisions about their future, and foster skills that will be highly useful in the business world.

shadowthe JA Job Shadow gives thousands of student’s meaningful workplace experience from some of the greatest minds and companies in San Diego. While spending a day at a business, students learn dressing and speaking professionally, being on time and working as a team, are just as important as a strong academic foundation.
We are grateful to our board companies, industry leaders, community partners, nonprofits, community colleges and school districts, who have opened their doors to a record-breaking 5,055 high school students this year. 58 companies provided multiple work-based learning opportunities to JA students. these companies represent the following key industries in the regional economy:

The City of Carlsbad, Junior Achievement and Carlsbad elementary schools have joined together to introduce local government to more than 16,700 third-grade students through the award-winning CityStuff program.
100 San Diego Boy Scouts earned their Personal Management Merit Badge by learning the concepts of planning for their financial future through budgeting and investing.
the California Center on Economic Education (CCEE) & Junior Achievement partner to provide a financial literacy workshop for teachers, including personal financial guidance, as well as classroom-ready curriculum developed by CCEE and JA’s Mission Fed JA Finance Park experience!
On October 1, 2015 Junior Achievement of San Diego launched a new experiential learning program, Mission Fed JA Finance Park! Students learn how to create a budget, save for the future, plan for their career, and spend wisely!

JA EDuCAtIOn PROGRAMS
ja company Programthe JA Company Program, a hallmark of JA dating back to 1919, allows students to start and manage their own business. By organizing and operating an actual business enterprise, students not only experience how business functions, but also learn financial responsibility, work-readiness skills and entrepreneurship.
In May, 2016 students were selected as one of 15 finalist teams to compete at the Junior Achievement national Student Leadership Summit (nSLS) in Washington, D.C. the students traveled to the nation’s capital for the three-day event, and competed with teen entrepreneurs from across the united States.
the San Diego students represented San Dieguito High School Academy in Encinitas and founded MyKikback.com, an online event-planning website that simplifies the party-planning experience. the company hopes to work with clients to create a fun, relaxing party setting so their clients do not have to spend a lot of time, money and stress in the planning.

Junior Achievement’s San Diego Business Hall of Fame honors business leaders who have moved San Diego forward. to be inducted as a Hall of Fame Lifetime Laureate, an individual’s record of achievement must demonstrate: business excellence, courageous thinking and actions, vision and innovation, and inspiring leadership. Most importantly, Laureates are outstanding role models for our youth. the 28th Annual San Diego Business Hall of Fame presented by the Jack in the Box Foundation, took place on September 27, 2016. All proceeds from the event support Junior Achievement’s Kindergarten through 12th grade programs.

golf classicOn September 15, 2016, the 4th Annual Junior Achievement Golf Classic presented by San Diego Fluid System technologies raised essential dollars to support JA programs. Over 100 golfers enjoyed the private, tom Fazio-designed golf course, a 7,160-yard, par 72 championship masterpiece at the Grand Golf Club. the golf participants received an all-inclusive round of golf with a complimentary caddie for each foursome, a travis Mathew shopping experience, hole-in-one contests, and awards reception.

this also includes our Annual Bowl-A-Thon & Casino Night!
JA Bowl-A-Thon is a fun event and is one of JA’s biggest fundraisers! thousands of participants from more than 50 companies bowl each year and individually fundraise to help provide JA programs to local students across San Diego County. this year’s theme, ‘Bowl-a-thon Strikes Back,’ offered a great opportunity for teams to dress as their favorite Star Wars characters. We congratulate SDG&E/Sempra for raising the most funds at the 2016 “May the Force Bowl With You” event.

JA Casino Night is an annual event open to all! It’s a fun night of games, food, and drink, all while benefitting San Diego County students. A minimal entrance fee provides guests with $200 of play money with opportunities to win great prizes! Games include Blackjack, Craps, Poker, and the crowd favorite – the Bingo Lounge. Funds raised from the 2016 JA Casino night provided an opportunity to nearly 200 additional San Diego County students to receive JA programs.
