JVS. Building better lives. One job at a time.

ANNUAL REPORT 2013

“JVS has been an extraordinary partner, not only in making sure that we have training in

the heart of the city but in looking at how we can improve workforce development.”

– Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti

The 2013 calendar year was barely in the rear view mirror when President Obama took the stage for the 2014 State of the Union Address. In that memorable speech, he lauded the opportunities and resources available at America’s Job Centers (formerly called WorkSource Centers and One-Stops) and stressed the need for an overhaul of America’s training programs “to make sure they have one mission: train Americans with the skills employers need, and match them to good jobs that need to be filled right now.”

The work of JVS is an embodiment of efforts to bridge and eliminate the skills gap, to turn out well-prepared and confident employers and to match them with existing jobs. Our award-winning BankWork$ and HealthWorks programs not only prepare our trainees for first-step careers in the financial and health care industries, but they then match them up with recruiters from partnering agencies who have real jobs to fill.

Indeed, 2013 was a banner year for BankWork$ which graduated its 700th student, placed its 500th graduate in a job and, for good measure, received a formal commendation from the Los Angeles City Council. The true rewards are in hearing the stories of the people, many of whom have experienced the challenges of long-term unemployment who use these training programs as springboards to a better life. This is true also of the many people who are helped out of poverty through our very successful welfare to work programs.

We are always on the lookout for new opportunities and new partners to help our clients open the door to a new

and vibrant field.

Our affiliation with corporate sponsors, employers, community partners and our many generous donors are the primary reasons that we can make these programs available free of charge to our clients who are very much in need. A donation to JVS directly

helps a client help himself, and there is no better way to help put America back to work.

Rebranded nationally as the America’s Job Center (AJC) Network, the JVS WorkSource Centers continue to be the hub of the agency’s operations. In 2013, the AJC at Marina del Rey served 5,372 new clients and had 15,348 repeat visits. The West Hollywood AJC had 733 new clients and 4,777 repeat visits. JVS was also asked by L.A. County to

take over the operation of the Northeast San Fernando Valley AJC.

In 2013, BankWork$ placed 138 program graduates in jobs, a 53% increase over 2012. Job retention at six months – a key performance measurement for JVS as well

the employers – stood at 84%, significantly higher than what banks experience with employees hired from other sources. And to end the year on a high note, BankWork$ was recognized by The Los Angeles City Council for its stellar contribution to workforce development.

A total of 53 individuals enrolled in HealthWorks and all 53 successfully completed the training. Of the 47 who passed the State Certified Nurse Assistant certification exam, 40, or 85%, were placed into employment, an increase of 54% over 2012. A strong 93% of those new employees remained in their jobs after 90 days, a significant achievement. Additionally, JVS greatly increased its development of prospective employers of CNAs over the course of the year, yielding strong, solid engagement with residential and acute care facilities around Los Angeles County.

Of the 399 youth served by JVS Youth Programs in 2013, 97% completed work readiness training and received job search and educational support. The majority of these young people are living in poverty and facing substantial odds in today’s competitive job market, including those who have grown up in the foster care system. The program also provides summer work opportunities and additional supportive services help them achieve success by providing transportation assistance and professional clothing for interviews and the workplace.

JVS Assessment and Disability served nearly 2,600 clients, providing vocational evaluations and assistance with small business plans. In addition, 100 students

with developmental disabilities from Pathway at UCLA Extension received instruction in Career Development. The agency’s Dashew Assessment Center houses the only vocational evaluation program in Southern California

with state of the art technology for individuals who are blind and visually impaired.

Comprehensive vocational evaluation services were provided to individuals

with a wide variety of disabilities as well as participants in welfare-

to-work, refugee, and general relief programs who received assistance in setting goals to help advance their careers.

“I’ve grown so much as a person professionally and all the training I received from JVS has helped me

out the most. You made me aware of how to be a great speaker which has led to my success.

Thank you for everything.” – BankWork$ graduate Ashley

The JVS Business Development Division assisted California employers in securing Employment Training Panel (ETP) funding from the State of California in excess of $1.3 million dollars. JVS Business Development coordinates the application and implementation of these contracts and in many cases provides customized training to these businesses. All proceeds generated by this division go directly to support JVS’ humanitarian mission.

Through its Multicultural Services Department, JVS helps low income and refugeee populations to overcome multiple barriers, helping them build new careers and

achieve economic independence. The department provides an array of services ranging from job training to ESL classes, case management and follow-up support. The department served more than 9,000 clients at five offices throughout the greater Los Angeles area in 2013.

WoMentoring provided critical mentoring and guidance through mentor/mentee pairings with a total of 136 participants. The professional mentorship program works in collaboration with the WoMentoring Leadership Network (WLN) whose generous donors support our program participants. In 2013, the WLN sponsored its first major event Woman to Woman: Living Your Authentic Life.

Servicemen and women returning from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq continue to face a unique set of obstacles as they transition to civilian life and a changed working world. In 2013, 325 veterans took advantage of the specialized one-on-one case management employed by JVS Veterans First, with 237 getting placed in new jobs. Battle Buddy Groups, emphasizing peer support with the supervision of our specially trained and highly skilled staff provide a safe and supportive peer environment for veterans coping with multiple challenges. The program’s innovative partnership model was honored by the Los Angeles Business Journal at their annual Nonprofit and Corporate Citizen Awards.

“I like working with people, helping them get a job. I’m someone who likes to be involved with a charity in a hands-on way. I have five or six friends who attended the Gala and are now getting involved with JVS. That’s very good for the charity and it’s also a confirmation that I got the right place.”

At its inaugural event, the WoMentoring Leadership Network (WLN) took attendees around the world and into the hopes and dreams of aspiring women and their mentors. Titled “Woman to Woman: Living Your Authentic Life,” the capacity-filled event at Hillcrest Country Club brought in more than 220 WLN members, guests, friends and prospective members to hear an exciting array of speakers and panelists including Oscar-nominated producer/director Amy Ziering, bestselling author Lisa See, renowned photojournalist Dana Gluckstein and leading physicians Drs. Sarah J. Kilpatrick, Puja K. Mehta and Ilana Cass of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

At its November gala, JVS honored Marshall Geller, the Co-Founder and Managing Partner of St. Cloud Capital, with its Lifetime Achievement Award. Presenting the award was business leader, motivational speaker and best-selling author Chris Gardner. Gardner overcame homelessness and the challenges of being a single parent to chase his dream of being a stockbroker. His story was told in the box office hit,“The Pursuit of Happyness,” starring Will Smith and based on his bestselling autobiography. The senior managing director of Bear Stearns & Co. at the time, Geller gave Gardner one of his first shots at success in the world of finance. Geller has since joined the JVS Board of Directors.

With more than 30 veteran friendly employers in attendance at The EXPO Center, JVS and Salvation Army Haven partnered to address the vital issue of veteran unemployment at L.A. Cares, a community symposium designed to shine a light on the challenges and rewards of helping our heroes return to civilian life. L.A. Cares featured keynote remarks by L.A. City Director of Economic Development Jan Perry and Police Commissioner Steve Soboroff. Executives from four prominent area businesses led a panel on best practices in military hiring initiatives. They included Activision/Blizzard, VONS, ACET and Bank of America.

Nearly 500 business leaders, supporters and returning sponsors gathered to network

and celebrate the achievements of JVS at the 16th Annual Strictly Business

L.A. Luncheon. Thanks in part to the generosity of corporate sponsor The Boeing Company and JVS Champion Award honorees Roz and Jack Zukerman, JVS raised nearly

$400,000 from its annual networking and awards lunch at The Beverly Hilton. A pledge drive

held during the event brought in close to $30,000 in under 15 minutes. Fritz Coleman

of NBC4 served as event host.

“My involvement with the agency was motivated by the long term involvement of my parents, Ruth and Irving Karp. I guess you could say I’ve grown up with JVS, having attended multiple JVS events over the years, knowing many of the members of the board and learning more each year about the great services provided by the agency. Following my father’s passing, I was honored to be invited to join the Board and the Scholarship Committee, and to now co-chair the Scholarship Committee, so that I can continue the legacy of supporting a program that is very important to our family – education.”

JVS Wins National JobRaising Challenge

JVS answered the call to put America back to work in a big way.

As the top earner in the 2013 JobRaising Challenge sponsored by

the Skoll Foundation, CrowdRise and the Huffington Post, JVS

outraised nearly 70 employment -focused nonprofits across the

nation. In addition to earning the $150,000 grand prize, JVS also

won a $5,000 mini-challenge by being the nonprofit that earned the

most during the week of Jan. 28 to Feb. 4. Between prize money and

dollars raised, JVS’ total for the six week period was $409,100. An

equally exciting outcome was the gain of hundreds of new, first-time

supporters who helped us to the finish line!

JVS’ victory was featured in the Chronicle

of Philanthropy, and CEO Vivian Seigel was

interviewed by Huffington Post Founder Arianna

Huffington on HuffPost Live.

These are much more than words. I have been fortunate to witness, firsthand, the amazing impact our donors make and the transformative power their gifts have in the lives of our clients. Before I joined JVS, I had no idea of the resources and expertise it takes to assist even one person on the road to financial independence and self-sufficiency. What differentiates JVS – what I like to call the “secret sauce” - is our dedicated and professional staff who work one-on-one with our clients, assess their needs and skill levels, offer them access to our customized vocational training and education programs, coach them on revising their resume and improving their job interview techniques, and ultimately help place them in jobs that offer a future.

JVS does all of this as efficiently and effectively as possible, and our donors invest with confidence,

knowing that more than 90 cents of every dollar raised goes directly to programs

and services. I would love to have a conversation with you about how you can become more engaged in moving our mission forward. There are

many ways you can help. I invite you to join me for a personalized

tour of an America’s Job Center, or at of our program graduations,

where you can meet our clients and hear their stories. In the meantime, please

remember to share your job openings with JVS, consider donating your used vehicle or perhaps volunteer your time and expertise at a career workshop or on one of our Board committees. You can also create a legacy of hope by including JVS in your estate plan. Without donor support, it would not be possible for JVS to make such a profound difference in our community. On behalf of every person whose life has been changed for the better by your generosity, I thank you.

At its annual summer Awards Ceremony at Sinai Temple, the JVS Scholarship Committee distributed $492,000 in scholarship awards to 163 deserving Jewish students, many of whom were able to thank their donors in person. In the spirit of Tikkun Olam (“repairing the world,”) the Tzedakah Box Project entered its third year – encouraging students, alumni and guests to give back. The many donations that were collected that night resulted in $13,561 that, when paired with a donor match, will enable JVS to sponsor ten additional students. In the program’s 41 year history, JVS has awarded over 3,800 scholarships totaling nearly $6 million to date.

JVS donors gathered for a special Evening of Appreciation to unveil the newly updated JVS Donor Wall of Honor, which recognizes the individuals, corporations and foundations that have given a minimum of $25,000 cumulatively. Many of these donors have given generously to JVS for ten or more consecutive years.
