City Council President Mike Ross enters his 10th year representing one of the city’s most diverse districts, from Beacon Hill to Mission Hill, from Fenway Park to the nation’s oldest park, the Boston Common. He learned the power an individual can have on a community from his father, Stephan Ross, a Holocaust survivor who has dedicated his life to counseling Boston’s most vulnerable youth. Mike is the first Jewish president in the history of the Boston City Council. Mike knows that by bringing divergent interests to the table, Boston can work through these difficult times to emerge an even better place to live, work, study, and raise a family; a city that people of all ages and interests can enjoy, a place for businesses to flourish, and a place for government to engage its citizenry.

2009 Community Innovator AwardState Street Foundation, Inc.
George A. Russell Jr., President
Beatriz Alvarez, a Columbian immigrant and mother of two, wanted to set an example for her daughters by advancing her career and validating her foreign education credential. JVS’ Careers in Medical Office Program helped Beatriz gain valuable skills and develop a career path by providing training in customer service, medical terminology, and job search assistance. A stellar student, Beatriz graduated at the head of her class, and—with JVS’ help—secured employment at East Boston Neighborhood Health Center.
Today, Beatriz continues to receive career coaching from JVS and has enrolled in JVS’ English for College Success class, a program offered at the health center and designed to prepare students for college-level academics.
Beatriz’s hard work and determination will help her accomplish her goals of obtaining a Medical Administration degree from Bunker Hill Community College and advancing her career at the health center. Beatriz is grateful for JVS’ assistance in helping her live the American Dream of gainful employment and higher education. 2

Jacques Kitembo came to the US in 2007 as a Political Asylee. Despite having significant experience as a French teacher, the Congo native found it difficult to find employment because he was unfamiliar with the job search and interview process. Through JVS’ Refugee Services, Jacques improved his English and worked with employment specialists to create strong cover letters, practice interviews, and search for jobs. Jacques also utilized Career Moves’ services to create a professional resume.
Through JVS’ help and his own extensive networking, Jacques found immediate work and secured several part-time teaching positions at institutions including UMass Boston, Pine Manor College, and Roxbury Community College. JVS also connected Jacques to the head of Boston University’s French Department, where Jacques plans pursue his Ph.D.
Despite a very hectic schedule, Jacques remains focused on moving his career forward and reaching his goal of a full-time appointment teaching French at the university level. Jacques’ hard work has already paid off: after seven years of separation, Jacques saved enough money to fly his wife and seven daughters to the US. Today, Jacques is very happy to be reunited with his family and grateful for JVS’ services.

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center is one of the nation’s preeminent academic health centers, providing state-of-the-art clinical care, research, and teaching in affiliation with Harvard Medical School. Hosting 750,000 patient visits each year, BIDMC annual revenues are over $1.2 billion.
Tonight we honor Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center for its considerable investment in its employees. Over the past four years, BIDMC has launched five “Pipeline” Programs utilizing internal resources and community collaborations that train employees to move up to new careers in health care with more responsibility and increased pay.
During the process of assessing employees’ academic skills for pipeline programs, it became clear that many employees were not yet ready to do college-level work. BIDMC sought funding from The Boston Foundation and launched the Employee Career Initiative. This program makes available to employees one-on-one career and academic counseling, free academic assessment on site, free on-site pre-college reading, English and math courses, and free college-level science courses.
In 2008, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center became the flagship employer partner in the JVS Healthcare Training Institute. Through the Healthcare Training Institute, BIDMC is able to provide its employees with four different levels of English for Speakers of Other Languages, English pronunciation, and citizenship classes; and will soon offer GED and basic computer skills classes.
BIDMC has made a number of presentations about careers in healthcare at The Work Place, a one-stop career center that is a collaboration between JVS and the Mayor’s Office of Jobs and Community Services. BIDMC staff has worked with The Work Place to help its job seeker customers to access jobs at the hospital, and has hired JVS Careers in Medical Office skills training graduates. In addition, The BIDMC Neuropsychology Unit has referred a number of their patients with Aspergers syndrome to JVS for employment services.
JVS is pleased to recognize the strong work of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and the partnership that has helped serve hundreds of employees.

For more than 30 years, the State Street Foundation, Inc., the philanthropic grantmaking arm of State Street Corporation, has invested its resources in charitable organizations around the world where the company operates. The Foundation works to help ensure that less-advantaged citizens in its local communities are equipped with the resources they need to thrive and succeed. The State Street Foundation has made grants totaling $150 million since its inception in 1977. In the Boston area particularly, the Foundation focuses its support on workforce development and education initiatives, as well as basic needs and community improvement.
Tonight we honor the State Street Foundation and George A. Russell Jr. for their support of JVS’ Bridges to College program, which prepares graduates of JVS education and skills training programs to enroll in college-level courses. With the Foundation’s investment, JVS is creating sustainable pathways for low-income clients into advanced education, training and family-supporting careers. The Bridges to College program provides low-skilled adults with the tools necessary to transition successfully into college-level study in healthcare and other high demand, high skill industries. The pilot program launches this May, with the first cohort of 15 students enrolling in Bunker Hill Community College in the fall of 2009, well on their way of gaining new skills and securing sustainable employment.
The Foundation’s commitment to higher education enabled JVS to create a new set of services geared to helping people obtain the education they need to advance in the workplace. JVS would like to thank the State Street Foundation for its support of the Bridges to College program, which will advance the education and earning potential of many low-wage workers in Boston communities.

JVS has served the greater Boston community for over 70 years. From the European immigrants JVS was founded to assist in the 1930’s, to the thousands struggling amidst economic instability today, JVS continues to be a resource for individuals seeking education, employment, and opportunity. JVS offers individuals skills training and education to assist them in securing employment that pays family-sustaining wages, and partners with employers to provide the education and support their employees need to ascend their career ladders. JVS achieves this by providing the highest quality employment, education, training, and career-related services to those in need and working with employers to create and deliver education and training services to their workers. With a new focus on creating pathways into advanced education, JVS will ensure successful transitions to college.
On one special evening each spring, we invite you to celebrate the achievements of our outstanding corporate partners and remarkable clients who exemplify the importance of workforce investment and lifelong learning. This year, we will highlight our work in making college accessible for working adults and the importance of post-secondary education in today’s workplace.
Thank you for joining us tonight.
