First Link with the CollegeMy first direct contact with North Lindsey College was 41 years ago when I was an apprentice here at 16 years old, studying for an ordinary National Diploma in Engineering, and I have had links with the College ever since. Over the years I have studied languages here and in 1977-78 I studied here for a Diploma in Management Studies under Sheffield Polytechnic (now Sheffield Hallam University).

Current SituationI have been a Governor now for 9 years and am currently into my second year as Chair. My reason for becoming a Governor is I have benefited tremendously in my life from having had a very good education, and becoming a Governor is one way of putting something back into education and improving it for those who come after.

Personal BackgroundI have worked in the steel industry in Scunthorpe all my life and have been a director of Caparo Merchant Bar for 18 years. I am currently Managing Director, a post which I have held since 2003. I have degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Human Resource Management, and I am a Chartered Mechanical and Materials Engineer, and a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute.

My activities outside of the Steel Industry include 5 years on the Humberside Learning & Skills Council (2000-2005) and immediate past president of EEF Sheffield.

Highlights of Being a GovernorFor me the main highlight is seeing the progress that has been made, particularly over the last 5 years. The college has gone from strength to strength, as shown by the Ofsted reports and awards that it has achieved.

Personal MessageI want to stress firstly that I am proud of this College and its achievements. It really is in the premier division. It is a privilege to be Chair of the Corporation and to have had the opportunity to be a part of the successes gained. I am now looking forward to playing a part in the success that I know the College, its students and staff will have in the future.

International SuccessDuring the academic year 2007/08 the College forged ahead with its international strategy with an abundance of activity taking place. Opened in October 2007 the vision behind the creation of an International Centre was to place North Lindsey College in the international marketplace building relationships and identifying projects fostered on best practice.

One of the highlights of the year for the International Centre saw the Principal deliver two papers to a global audience at the 2008 World Congress and International Community and FET College Conference in New York, where the College was described as ‘World Class’.

Part of the College’s strategy also saw management visits to Mid-Plains Community College, Nebraska and Coastline Community College, California where relationships were fostered and initial plans were put in place for learner exchanges to follow, with six motor vehicle learners being the first to take part in a cross-Atlantic learning experience with a ten-day visit to Mid-Plains Community College, Nebraska, USA in April 2008.

Early Years Centre

Staff, students and invited guests were joined by the future generation of learners for the official opening of the extension to the Early Years Centre at North Lindsey College.

The extension represents a fantastic addition to the Maurice Taylor Building and ensures learners in this area receive the best possible provision in an attractive new building.

Principal, Professor Roger Bennett, welcomed everyone to the opening and then handed over to Di Barrett, Headteacher of Riddings Infants School, for the official ribbon cutting which saw Humpty Dumpty fall from a cleverly constructed wall of ribbon.

Di Barrett was aided in the cutting down of the wall by Sarah Reavey (aged 6) and Harry Thomas (aged 6) both pupils of Riddings Infants School.

Kingsway Airlines

Ground crew and learners welcomed the first Boeing 747 to take off from North Lindsey College, Scunthorpe, at its official opening.

Kingsway Airline crew directed passengers to the departures lounge where they were issued with boarding passes before being checked in, ready for take off.

Once seated, passengers were taken through the pre-flight safety demonstration then, whilst cruising at 35,000 feet on course for Geneva, they were served with a complimentary glass of bucks fizz to celebrate the aircrafts inaugural flight.

Bought by the College, the aircraft was dismantled before being re-assembled in one of the classrooms. Complete with overhead lockers, emergency lighting, refreshment trolley and PA system, the aircraft is the exact height and width of an in-

service aircraft to give learners the most realistic learning experience. A check-in area has also been created with a screen displaying flight information. The aircraft represents a unique resource for the College and will benefit not only travel & tourism learners but also hospitality & catering learners who will be able to practice food and drink service on board the aircraft.

The air cabin, together with the College travel shop, will enable North Lindsey College travel & tourism learners to gain the confidence and skills they’ll need to start a career in the exciting and ever expanding fields of travel and aviation.

The aircraft also has scope to be used by the wider community including local schools, those with a fear of flying and has the potential to be used to offer the ‘First Aid in Confined Spaces’ course.

OpeningsDuring 2007/08 the College saw continued investment by extending and developing various departments around the campus enhancing enjoyable learning experiences.

Higher Education

Higher Education in Scunthorpe goes from strength to strength as North Lindsey College continues to expand its higher education provision.

The College has seen the official opening of a dedicated higher education facility and has completed the purchase of Global House – former electronics factory just metres from the College’s main site, which offers excellent accommodation in both classroom and seminar facilities as well as office space for staff.

The opening of the new HE building was attended by members of the local council and the wider business community. The official ceremony was conducted by former Chair of Governors at the College, Mr Nigel Dransfield.

During his welcome speech, College Principal Professor Roger Bennett, explained to invited guests how

the expansion was an integral part of the College’s plan to cater for an ongoing growth in the number of local people seeking higher education courses without leaving the area.

From the initial concept through to final completion, the entire project took less than two years and provides an exciting addition to the campus and an excellent resource for existing and new students.

Investing in higher education will also have wider implications for North Lincolnshire and it is hoped will help to plug the skills gap in key areas such as engineering.

College Diner!

North Lindsey College learners returned in September to find the old college diner replaced by a contemporary high street style coffee bar, expanded shop and new servery offering a range of food options from value through to premium ranges.

The College has invested a substantial amount of money in the refurbishment to ensure a state of the art eatery was provided for learners. In selecting a contractor the College was looking for a company that had a proven track record in the delivery of a diverse range of food services from learner dining facilities to corporate training events, black tie dinners and producing meals for the College nursery.

To further enhance the dining experience offered to learners, Aramark are also planning theme days, food theatre, loyalty cards and supplier promotions displayed on a top of the range plasma screen.

Nigel Dransfield, former Chairman of the Corporation officially opened the diner cutting the ribbon to allow trading to commence. Andrew Maine (Chief Executive) from Aramark also attended the opening.

The first fifty customers of the opening received a free voucher to taste the top quality products on sale.

Aramark’s key strength in winning the contract for North Lindsey College was its focus is on providing healthy options with almost all products being produced on-site supporting the government’s agenda for healthy eating. The emphasis is on locally sourced produce with Fairtrade and Rainforest Alliance products also being promoted. The diner is now offering a wider range of products and services to meet the expansion in the range of students now studying at the College.

Aramark’s vision is “to blend traditional home cooked meals with international flavoursome cuisine.”

The general perception from the learners is fantastic, they especially like the modern feel and toasting their own bread at the newly installed breakfast bar!

Travel Office

Travel & Tourism learners at North Lindsey College are set to benefit from their own working travel agents, sited on the College campus. Working in conjunction with Martins Travel and Brigg Tourist Information Centre learners will be working with the same operating systems as those used by high street travel agents.

The official opening of the travel office took place with Pamela Abbey, Manager of Brigg Tourist Information Centre coming along to cut the ribbon accompanied by Kevin Martin (of Martins Travel) who will be supplying rail tickets to the College.

The travel office will have a comprehensive source of information on flights, holidays, car hire, rail travel, accommodation and much more. The office will be open to both learners and staff of North Lindsey College as well as the general public.

First Diploma and National Diploma in Travel and Tourism learners will provide cover for the agency on a rota basis to gain experience in using the systems before entering the world of work.

Hardwicks

North Lindsey College opens a training restaurant in memory of former lecturer.

The new training restaurant has been named Hardwick’s in memory of Shirley Hardwick who was initially a student at the College in 1976 and returned in 2002 as a part time lecturer. Shirley battled with lung cancer and eventually lost her life in May 2006.

The restaurant will be used as a training facility for current students and Shirley’s family were invited to the College to celebrate the opening with a sit down lunch and flambé demonstrations.

Lisa Wood, Catering Manager at Elsham Hall officially cut the ribbon to open the restaurant. Lisa is a previous student at North Lindsey College and has since worked at Winteringham Fields as a Second Chef and in the catering business for eighteen years.

Shining Stars of the Education Sector

Staff from North Lindsey College were among more than 100 Further Education staff and learners from across England to be invited to attend the glittering annual QIA STAR Awards ceremony, held at Old Billingsgate in London on Monday 26th November.

The awards are designed to recognise the hard work and dedication of the ‘unsung heroes’ in education. Recognising those people who make an outstanding contribution to the quality of learning that millions of people in England receive on a daily basis.

The College submitted nominations in two out of the ten STAR Award categories: Jill Fenwick in the category of ‘Outstanding Contribution to Workforce Development’ sponsored by Construction Skills, and the Business Development Team, nominated in the category of ‘Outstanding Contribution to Engaging Employers’ sponsored by LLUK. Although the College was just pipped to the post in both categories, being shortlisted out of more than 1,300 nominations represented a huge achievement for the College.

Beacon Award for Local College

North Lindsey College was awarded the Beacon Award for College/School Partnerships, sponsored by AQA (the Assessment and Qualifications Alliance). Winners were announced by Chair of the AoC Awards, Dame Patricia Morgan-Webb, at the 12th Annual AoC Conference held at the International Convention Centre in Birmingham.

Officially opened in November 2004, the John White Skills Centre was borne out of the vision of College Principal, Professor Roger Bennett, to raise the aspirations of young people and to provide them with a seamless transition from pre to post 16 vocational education and training, in a caring and supportive learning environment. The centre has gone from strength to strength and is widely acknowledged as the leading provider of high quality 14-16 vocational curriculum in the area.

In its three years since opening, the Centre has delivered training to in excess of 700 pupils per year. Learners participate in over 30 subjects, ranging from entry level programmes to level 2 diplomas. The Centre is now in its third year

successfully supporting all 14 secondary schools within North Lincolnshire and has received many commendations for the excellent work it has done. The programmes developed are cost effective and meet the diverse needs of the students, schools, employers, local authority and the skills agenda set by the government.

The success of the provision was recognised during the Colleges Ofsted inspection in March 2007. Dissemination of the experiences gained by the College through the development of the 14-19 provision will assist other providers to establish a similar facility to support local initiatives. At the request of the LSC the Centre has already hosted three conference events on sharing best practice.

The Centre is attracting worldwide interest, in particular from the USA, and is now well positioned to deliver against the Leitch agenda as it moves towards its challenges and targets set for 2010. North Lindsey College Skills Centre is an outstanding success story, borne out of vision, collaboration, hard work and determination. This centre provides opportunities for all young people, is socially inclusive and will influence the local and sub regional economy.

AwardsThe College has had much to celebrate during 2007/08, being nominated for and receiving a number of awards right across the campus; showing the true dedication and commitment from the College and its employees.

A Royal Outing

Three North Lindsey College staff members graced the grounds of Buckingham Palace as they took up their official invitations to a Royal Garden Party.

The members of staff were unaware that they had been nominated and were absolutely thrilled to find out that they had been recognised for their contribution to further education.

Attending the Royal Garden Party was a once in a lifetime opportunity for David Simons, Head of Central Services, Janet Drinkwater, Additional Support Manager and Malcolm Mortimer, Curriculum Area Manager for Engineering, who all took it as a great honour to represent the College at Buckingham Palace.

The afternoon spent in the Palace grounds flew by with even the sunshine making an appearance during an otherwise wet and miserable day. The North Lindsey contingent spent time people watching as Her Majesty the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, and members of the Royal family, circulated among the invited guests talking to as many people as possible.

As expected, afternoon tea was fit for a Queen with an abundance of dainty cucumber sandwiches, delicious cakes, scones and jam, all ready to be enjoyed after a stroll around the beautiful gardens and time spent listening to two military bands. At a typical garden party, around 27,000 cups of tea, 20,000 sandwiches and 20,000 slices of cake are consumed requiring more than 400 waiting staff.

Royal garden parties have been held at Buckingham Palace since the 1860s, when Queen Victoria instituted what were known as ‘breakfasts’ (though they took place in the afternoon). Now, each and every summer, at least three garden parties are hosted by The Queen at Buckingham Palace with over 30,000 people attending in total.

Nursery of the Year

North Lindsey College’s Kingsway Children’s Centre receives the Nursery of the Year Award at the prestigious childcare awards.

North Lincolnshire Council’s Childcare Development Service and Huggies were the main sponsors of the evening to deliver the seven specially selected awards for the work carried out by local childcare specialists. The evening of celebrations was held at The Wortley House Hotel in Scunthorpe.

The children’s centres nominated for the awards were selected by parents of the children and video presentations were delivered of the youngsters at play for the selection process.

Kingsway Children’s Centre received the award for ‘Nursery of the Year’ which doubles up on the celebration from them recently being re-assessed for the Steps for Quality and successfully gaining a level 3, which will last for the next three years. The Kingsway Children’s Centre are not new to this event however and have won awards in previous years.

We have established very successful Outreach Centres on employers’ premises including Bakkavor New Primebake in Barton, TSC Foods and 2 Sisters in Scunthorpe, and Gunstones Pizza in Nottingham. There are over 2300 candidates working towards level 2, 3 and 4 programmes in a range of skill areas including Team Leading and Management, Customer Service, Business Administration, Food Manufacture, Warehousing and Storage, Health and Public Services and IT.

This has helped to raise the esteem of learners, business effectiveness and competitiveness through improved skills and it is supporting the Government’s Skill Strategy.

Helping to Raise Business EffectivenessIn addition, the College is using the Centres to deliver a range of business communication skills through ESOL and other Skills for Life programmes. These include Literacy, Numeracy and IT, improving the access for individuals to these life enhancing skills and improving business effectiveness. The success of these initiatives is measured by the response by businesses and two further companies will benefit from the initiative this year.

Greater Economic Success GroupThe College works very closely with Partners and the relationship with the Economic Development Team of North Lincolnshire Council has resulted in the establishment of a tripartite business development and support group, the “Greater Economic Success Group”.

Train to GainFollowing a very successful employer training pilot, the quality of the service delivered to Business has been recognised with the award of significant Train to Gain Provider Service contracts in Yorkshire & Humber, East and West Midlands regions and London North. A wide range of businesses including Motor Vehicle, Food Manufacturing, Engineering and the Health and Social Care Sector are able to access and engage in Level 2, 3 and 4 programmes, including business critical courses to improve their competitiveness in the marketplace.

Community and Employer PartnershipsWorking in partnership with employers and the community is very important to the College. We listen to local views in order to respond to their needs and contribute along with our partners to the development of a sound skills base for North Lincolnshire.

Extract from Ofsted Inspection report 2007– “The College is highly valued by employers …, for its flexible approach and adaptability to business needs”…. “Employer engagement and partnership working are outstanding. The college contributes significantly to meeting local and national priorities for regeneration and skills development. Training is tailored well to the specific business needs of the 1,600 employers involved with the college”.

Three surveys were carried out in 2007/08; a Teaching and Learning Survey, Parental Perception of the College and an Employer/Sponsor Evaluation. Most outcomes were very positive and any negative comments are taken forward through an action plan. Comments from all surveys are reflected in the College Self Assessment Report.

The Teaching and Learning Survey assessed to what extent the College was meeting its commitment to learners and included some questions to allow benchmarking to take place with the LSC National Survey and partner Colleges. The Survey was distributed to learners studying via all the various modes of attendance eg: Full-time, Part-time, Work Based Learning and Train to Gain.

Positive comments made by learners are displayed throughout College and notices are also displayed showing learner comments regarding any dissatisfaction they had and what has been done to improve this.

The Parental Perception Survey carried out resulted in very positive

feedback. The Employer Evaluation Survey was structured to gain feedback with regard to Customer Service, Course Evaluation and Course Training. Positive feedback was also gained from this survey.

The College continues to be recognised as holders of the ‘Matrix Standard’ for the quality of the information, advice and guidance given to current and prospective learners.

The Matrix Standard is awarded and assessed by The Guidance Accreditation Board (GAB).

In 2008 the Golden Jubilee Award was presented for the fifth time. It is awarded annually to a member of staff nominated by colleagues for helpfulness, enthusiasm and commitment to the College. Pete Langford, was the fifth recipient of this award.

THE COUNSELLING SERVICE staffed by a team of three qualified Counsellors offers learners a sense of belonging in a large establishment and offers support if any problems arise. The counsellors provide a comprehensive service

and act as a link with outside agencies who may also be able to assist. Both Learners and Staff are supported by this very busy team.

THE COLLEGE CHAPLAIN offers support and a listening ear to all learners, based in the Guidance & Counselling suite. A Prayer Room is available in the Lindsey Building where occasional services are held. In addition, the Chaplain organises a series of awareness and fundraising events across the year which are very well supported.

GUIDANCE SERVICES are provided in College by Connexions Advisers and the Colleges own team of Guidance Officers. The service provides information, guidance and advice on matters such as job search techniques, career choices, training opportunities and applications for further and higher education. The Colleges Guidance Team provide over one thousand one-to-one careers interviews with year 11 pupils in the local schools during the autumn term, helping them make the right choices when they leave school.

Customer Services & Support for LearnersWe consider a key element of our learners’ success is the continued information, advice, guidance and support, given by staff to our learners throughout their studies.

ENRICHMENT is an integral part of every full-time learner’s week, comprising and academic and pastoral tutorial and usually another activity to introduce breadth to the programme of study. Learners have flexible opportunities to study additional subjects and participate in sporting, social or other useful activities such as:

� 5 a side football � College football teams � Netball � College parties � Talent competition � Short courses eg first aid and survival cookery

� Road safety

KINGSWAY CHILDREN’S CENTRE is the only setting in the region to hold Investors in Children status. This has been maintained for four years and was achieved through a vigorous quality assurance scheme called “Steps to Quality” which was fully reassessed in June 2008.

Quotes identifying particular strengths include: “Quality improvement is central to all activity within the setting”“A culture of information sharing is embedded within the setting”“there is evidence of how the children influence the service provision”

A successful CPD programme has resulted in staff achieving qualifications ranging from level 3 to level 7. Staff have a firm commitment to continuous professional development and improving outcomes for children and families. There are currently 11 staff completing the Foundation Degree in Early Years and 3 graduate level staff working within the setting.

Kingsway Children’s Centre was awarded the “Nursery of the Year” at the local Child Care Awards in July 2008. This is the 5th year of being nominated by the parents and the 2nd time of winning.

Kingsway Children’s Centre continues to set the standard and benchmark for other settings to achieve.

STUDENT ADVISERS were very pro-active in assisting learners with UCAS (University applications) and a significant number of applications were made by Level 3 learners to Universities all over the country.

Teaching and LearningTeaching and learning has continued to make a positive contribution to local and regional development by sustaining delivery models that deliver a curriculum that is flexible and responsive to learner and employer need. There have been further curriculum reviews over this last year, to ensure our curriculum offer is appropriate to stakeholder need and fit for purpose.

The future of Teaching and Learning has been defined in the Strategic Plan 2007-2010. In this document, approved in 2007, we have assimilated a Teaching and Learning Strategy, which articulates the aim to be recognised as a centre of excellence in Teaching and Learning, raising learner aspirations and developing the vocational and lifelong learning skills of our learners.

The College is making a substantial investment in its staff through the training opportunities available, to ensure they have the appropriate skills required in an ever changing and challenging environment.

The Staff Development Unit has played a key role in improving teaching and learning across the College. It enables all new teaching staff without teacher training, to achieve professional qualifications and it supports staff across College via mentoring and the work of Advanced Practitioners. It also offers established staff

a wide range of development opportunities to maintain and share best practice in Teaching and Learning.

Whilst the Ofsted inspection of March 2007 commented on the good and improving teaching within the College, 2007 - 2008 saw further improvements in teaching standards across the College.

Continuing Professional Development this year has focused on training to enhance the quality of teaching and learning, assessor and verifier up-grades and teaching qualifications. A comprehensive range of Toolkit sessions have been held with over 151 sessions being delivered, attracting staff from all areas of the College. The Toolkit programme is designed to meet the needs of teachers and celebrate and disseminate best practice across the College. Difficulties still persist when trying to replace staff in specialist areas and it has been necessary to appoint staff who do not hold teacher qualifications.

New staff therefore complete the required teaching qualifications before being responsible for any learners and then work towards a further qualification within a defined period.

2007/08 has seen a 5% improvement in success rates (7% if short courses are included). This represents an exceptional 18% improvement since 2004/05. Further improved quality assurance etc... in terms of success rates.

During 2007-08 we have continued to invest in the infrastructure of the College. Through our planned maintenance programme we have undertaken a number of significant enhancements to our resources for learners and staff. The investment will continue into 2008-09.

The major project embarked upon during 2008 has been the purchase and refurbishment of Global House to provide the following provision:

� The development of sections of the existing building to form workshops, classrooms and staff rooms for Carpentry & Joinery, Brickwork and Plumbing.

� The conversion of the front section of the existing building to form classrooms and staff accommodation for Higher Education.

Other development and maintenance work included:

� Conversion of the redundant Café area within the John Oddell Building to form a new Beauty Salon and adjacent classroom facility

� Upgrading the lighting within the Kingsway Centre with an energy efficient system

� Installing a Building Energy Management system within six buildings

� External decoration to the Lindsey Building and the Resource Centre

� Decoration of classrooms and corridors

� Re-carpeting of classrooms and corridors

Throughout 2007/08 there has been continued investment in ICT services and equipment.

Over two hundred and seventy computers and associated equipment (printers etc.) were purchased to ensure up-to-date facilities were maintained for both staff and learners. Two ‘laptop trolleys’ (16 laptops each) were

also purchased, providing mobile IT facilities for use across the campus. These proved very successful with both learners and staff.

The campus network was extended to include two new buildings (Nigel Dransfield and Global House) which were also fully equipped with new IT equipment. Additionally work was carried out to improve network speed and resilience.

Investment in software has continued with a new HR system being purchased and an electronic registers system being developed and implemented. The latter has proven particularly successful in allowing management to quickly identify and act on areas of poor attendance. Learners have also acknowledged the usefulness of being able to access their electronic attendance records.

The college website (www.northlindsey.ac.uk) was also re-designed to give a more modern look and make accessing information easier for potential learners.

Our Resources

The annual awards ceremony held in June saw hundreds of North Lindsey College learners collect certificates and trophies in recognition of their achievements.

A fantastic line-up of special guests presented the awards including Nigel Adkins (Scunthorpe United Manager, David Barrett (Head of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Hull), Hayley Stapelton (Lecturer in Engineering) and Jan Fennell ‘Dog Listener’ and author.

Since completing their courses, many learners have progressed either into employment, onto higher education at North Lindsey College or onto universities across the UK, studying for both HNDs and degrees in their future profession.

Over 120 special awards were given out to nominated learners who demonstrated outstanding achievement, with each award winner receiving a trophy and special certificate of recognition from the College.

The Golden Jubilee Award was presented for the fifth time to the learner who demonstrated the very highest level of commitment and was an inspiration to others, which this year was Jonathan Backhouse, NC Mechanical Engineering learner. Jonathan has gained employment in his chosen career as a maintenance fitter. Jonathan has since enrolled on the HNC at North Lindsey College whilst in employment.

Building Success at North Lindsey College

The achievement of College bricklayer, Daniel Steeper, was recognised at an informal presentation attended by his employer and parents.

For the last 31 years the Guild of Bricklayers have held an annual competition encouraging young bricklayers to put their skills to the test in a gruelling competition.

Founded in 1932 the Guild of Bricklayers was established with the aim of promoting and maintaining the highest standards of craftsmanship in brickwork.

After six hours of intense competition, Daniel walked away with the bronze medal for his handy trowel work at the final held at Blackpool and the Fylde College. Curriculum Area Manager for Construction at North Lindsey College, Julian Walden commented on how difficult these competitions are and how different they are to working on site “for full marks the final construction has to match the drawing to the exact millimetre with points being deducted for each deviation from the design.”

Winning the bronze medal was a fantastic achievement for Daniel and reflects the hard work he has put into his course and the support that he has received from both his tutor and his employer Graham Godson. Daniel Steeper is the first learner from North Lindsey College to go through to the finals of this prestigious competition.

Local Sports Enthusiast Accepted at Top University!

North Lindsey College learner Sarah Sundaram secures a place at the prestigious Loughborough University!

Loughborough is the country’s premier University for sports development, research and education, and has an unparalleled record of sporting excellence. Sarah will be studying on the Sport and Exercise Science for three years with possible aspirations of being a physiotherapist.

Studying on the BTEC National Diploma in Sport at North Lindsey College, Sarah has excelled on her course and combines her studies with work, being involved with in the community, especially at the Appleby Frodingham Cricket Club where Sarah is a member and plays for the second and third team. Sarah has recently gained her Community Sports Leadership Award as part of her vocational qualification dedicating voluntary hours to the cricket club, which is Sarah’s favourite sport.

Sarah has also recently won an award for ‘Step into Sport’ at a local awards ceremony held for dedicated sporting volunteers.

Sarah Sundaram commented, “I have had an amazing experience at North Lindsey College and all the staff have been really helpful. Loughborough University has a reputation of being really hard to get accepted into and I’m delighted that I am going to study there.”

Student Governor Receives “Outstanding” Status from Lincoln University!

North Lindsey College learner receives special award at Lincoln University Graduation Ceremony 2008.

Deborah Barnard (aged 44) collected her B(sc) Honours Degree Certificate at Lincoln Cathedral, but to her surprise she was also awarded the Faculty Prize for Outstanding Achievement in the Department of Computing and Informatics. Only three awards are given out at this ceremony so Deborah, supported by her family and friends, felt truly honoured to receive the award.

Learning was never the planned intention for Deborah who has had to overcome many personal difficulties including being involved in a serious car accident. The accident was fourteen years ago and left Deborah with considerable health issues and necessitating a wheelchair. Despite the accident, Deborah has never allowed this challenge to interrupt her lifestyle or learning, becoming an inspiration at the College and a familiar face to staff and students alike.

Deborah decided to put a positive spin to the car accident and decided to pursue the education she desired. Starting out in September 1999, Deborah enrolled on a CLAIT course at North Lindsey College and has continued with her studies progressing course by course. Deborah has undertaken a range of courses and has most recently completed her Honours Degree of Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems. Deborah is also qualified as a Youth Worker and has just completed her 7303 Introduction to Teaching in Lifelong Learning, combining her hard-work and determination to better herself whilst juggling her role of being a compassionate mother and caring for her disabled son who is now aged 19.

Whilst dedicating her time and commitment to North Lindsey College, Deborah also signed up to be a Student Governor which involves being a full member of the Corporation and having the same status and responsibilities as all other Governors. Being a Student Governor has helped Deborah gain some knowledge of the education system and she now has aspirations to teach.

Financial ReviewDuring 2007-08 the College has been able to further consolidate its financial position and build on its previous year’s financial performance. Tight financial controls imposed by managers have enabled the College to operate within budgets and confirm its continued status as a category A (Outstanding) College.
