Coordinators Report

Once again I am delighted to present Kalgoorlie-Boulder Urban Landcare Group’s Annual Report for the period of 1 July 2008 - 30 June 2009. KBULG has had a very successful and productive year having completed all projects, programs and activities effectively and efficiently. All aims, objectives and outcomes for this period have been achieved. We have continued to improve on previous projects whilst developing and implementing many new projects. Of the many achievements over the past year, working within our Junior landcare program continues to be a highlight for me. The happy smiling faces and the enthusiasm of the students at the many nightstalks, bushwalks, tree plantings and the numerous other projects and activities we have completed. The KBULG Native Plant Nursery went great guns over this period with enormous outputs compared to previous years. It is fantastic to see locally grown native plants filling up bare space in schools, homes, tree planting sites and around the City. A big thank you to everyone who has helped us at the Community Nursery over the past year, especially to Lilian, Terrence, the work for the dole team, the women from the prison and everyone whom attended our native plant group. I would like to thank all of our members and our committee, all of whom without we could not continue to achieve the results and outcomes we have been able to over the past year. I am extremely proud and honored to be working for such a successful environmental organisation and hope to continue to build on the amazing work and success achieved by the ‘Goldfields Dust Abatement Committee’

and by my predecessors Kylie Payne and Joanne Gray, all of whom laid the solid foundations for KBULG being Kalgoorlie-Boulder’s Premier Community Environmental Organisation. Thank you also to Carly Ennor, who has kept our office and myself so organised and who has done such a great job once again in putting this report together. Most of all, I cant forget our amazing core sponsors! A very big thank you to you all! The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, Barrick Kanowna, KCGM, Western Power, LandCorp, Water Corporation, Paddington Gold and Norilsk Nickel. All of our sponsors have been extremely vital in supplying support, advice, motivation, and in-kind and financial assis-tance so that we can continue creating a ‘Better Environment and Better Lifestyle for the community of Kalgoorlie-Boulder. I look forward to working with KBULG and our sponsors over the coming year in the development and implementation of new and exciting innovative programs we can deliver to our community.

Environmental & Community Achievements

MEMORABLE MOMENTS Some memorable moments for 2008/2009 were:

• The successful implementation of

KBULG’s second Zero Waste week and Zero Waste Wednesday held in November 2008. Over 1500 students participated in total. Students from St Mary’s primary school were the winners of the Zero Waste Lunch Challenge for producing only three pieces of plastic for the entire school. Zero Waste Wednesday was a joint initiative by KBULG, Barrick Kanowna with sponsorship received by the Waste Management Board of WA.

• Winning the Environmental Communi-

cation and Education category in the WA Environment Awards 2008 was a true highlight. KBULG also took out the Young Legends Award in the 2009 Keep Australia Beautiful (WA) Sustainable Cities Awards. KBULG were finalists in the WA Regional Achievement Awards in the Landcorp Environment and Sustainability category. Congratulations KBULG!

• On Saturday the 28th of March KBULG

celebrated Earth Hour at the Katunga Lookout in Karlkurla Park. Goldfields residents were bussed up to the lookout and were treated to music, stargazing, a poet’s corner, and a stew cooked in a haybox cooker.

• In May 2009 35 locals gave their time and muscle to KBULG’s Clean Up For Your Future Day at Karlkurla Park. Participants scoured the bushland and collected a skip bin full of rubbish. Awards were given to those who made the best effort as well as the best find.

MEASURABLE OUTCOMES

• Approximately 150 people planted over

4000 trees, shrubs and ground covers on annual Community Tree Planting Day in 2008.

• Over 20,000 plants were grown by the

Native Plant Group & Nursery volunteers, supplementing our plant numbers at tree planting events around town and allowing thousands of plants to be donated to local community groups, schools and the community.

• Over 100 classes enrolled in the Junior

Landcare Programme in 2009. The 2008 Landcorp/KBULG ‘Drawing Competition’ was a huge success year with 459 entries entered from Primary Schools throughout Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

KBULG Annual Report - Page 8

Page 10: Annual Report 09 reduced - kbulg.org.au · Goldfields Water Wise Garden Poster 13 ... Waterwise Garden Comp 14 Annual Tree Planting Day 15 Annual Weed Competition 16 Regeneration

• A whopping 750kg of caltrops were

gathered in the 2009 weed competition.

• 2008 saw 31 gardening enthusiasts

enter their garden in our annual Waterwise Garden Competition. The gardens looked fabulous and judges were very impressed.

• Updating promotional and community educational material over this time has been a key focus, the development of our ‘new look’ newsletter in 2008 has proved very effective and has received a lot of positive feedback.

• Continued distribution of the Goldfields

Waterwise Garden Poster and Local Native Plants pamphlet. The free pamphlet compliments the poster well as it provides a more detailed look at local Goldfields Waterwise Plants ranging from Mallees & Trees through to ground covers and Dwarf Shrubs. Both the poster and the pamphlet are great resources for anyone wanting to grow a Native garden.

• All outcomes were achieved within this reporting period across all projects and activities. All measurable outcomes relating to projects and activities have been enhanced from previous years.

AWARDS KBULG staff attended the WA Environment Awards in November. KBULG was announced as finalists in 2 categories and declared winners of the Education and Communication Category. The awards were a great platform to showcase the excellent work KBULG is doing, has done, and what we continue to do within the community. KBULG also won the Young Legends Award in the 2009 Sustainable Cities Awards for our Junior Landcare Program. Out of the 41 projects we were also selected as one of the 3 finalists in the overall category. KBULG were also finalists in the WA Regional Achievement Awards in the Landcorp Environment and Sustainability category.

Projects and Activities

MEMBERSHIP KBULG membership was established in 2003. In 2008/09 we had approximately 275 members. KBULG members demonstrate their commitment to Landcare in the Goldfields community. They are involved with an award winning community group, and are working to achieve a better environment for the Goldfields and the people who live here.

JUNIOR LANDCARE

KBULG’s Junior Landcare Programme continues to expand. The aim of the programme is to keep teachers and students aware of, and involved in dealing with local environmental issues. KBULG visits all Kalgoorlie-Boulder schools at the beginning of the year and talks to staff about the Junior Landcare Programme. Teachers are then encouraged to enrol their class in the programme and participate in various activities throughout the year. Enrolled Junior Landcare classes receive a Junior Landcare Poster and can receive points throughout the year for being involved in landcare activities both inside and outside the classroom. All schools and interested teachers have a comprehensive locally produced Junior Landcare Package which contains details of local environmental information and activities undertaken inside and outside the school. The package includes classroom landcare activity sheets, environmental education resources, suggested times for landcare activities such as tree planting and seed collecting, out of school activities, pre & post excursion activities and several pamphlets. KBULG regularly send updates, information and reminders via email and fax of any upcoming events. This year children in the program participated in a range of KBULG activities including tree planting, seed ball making and Bushwalks at

Karlkurla Bushland Park, planting native gardens in their school grounds, class room projects, implementing recycling, Waste Free Wednesday, Landcare Drawing Competition and Schools Tidy Day to name a few. Teachers and students were given the option to do different and extra activities as long as they follow in the environmental theme. This years Annual Junior Landcare Drawing competition was sponsored by Landcorp. Students were asked to draw pictures of what Karlkurla Park meant to them. The competition was a huge success with over 450 entries received from 6 Kalgoorlie-Boulder Primary Schools. The winners of the competition were given a voucher for a local sports store and also had their art works incorporated in to the design of the new gates of Karlkurla Bushland Park.

Smaller prize packs were presented to the best entries and runners-up from the classes that took part in the project. This years Junior Landcare Tree Planting took place at Karlkurla Bushland Park. Students participated in making Seed Balls before planting shrubs and trees to revegetate bare areas of the park. As well as learning about the environment, students also learnt about sharing, helping and mentoring as older children teamed up with younger ones. The 2008 KBULG Junior Landcare Class of the Year Award was awarded to Donna Davies pre-primary class at Kalgoorlie Primary School, with a special achievement Award given to Terri Smith and Sharon O’Halloran’s Year 4 classes at St Mary’s Primary School. The winning class was presented with the Landcare Class of the Year Shield. Dee Thompson from Barrick Kanowna presented the students with their trophy and each student received a bag of goodies. All of the winning classes demonstrated a great deal of involvement in working towards a ‘Better Environment and Better Lifestyle’ for the community of Kalgoorlie-Boulder. Through the Programme students learn to appreciate local plants and animals and are made aware of bushland management issues. They are encouraged to think about these issues and ways they can help. The Junior Landcare Program is sponsored by Barrick Kanowna, whom provides both funding and on ground support.

NEWSLETTER

KBULG produced it’s quarterly community newsletter in 2008/2009. The aim of the newsletter is to inform the local community of KBULG activities and how they can be involved, and to increase community awareness of local environmental projects and issues. The revised four page, colour, centre spread in a Saturday edition of the Kalgoorlie Miner has proved extremely successful. KBULG believes the new publication is effective in reaching a wider audience and has resulted in more enquires, awareness and involvement in KBULG projects and environmental issues around town. The funky new layout and informative, motivating articles have received fantastic feedback from the community. Members can also download a copy of the newsletter from the KBULG website. MEDIA KBULG regularly has articles or segments in the local media and in 2007/2008 KBULG featured in over 80 articles in local papers! KBULG aims to inform the community of its activities through regular Media Releases and contact with; the Kalgoorlie Miner, Golden Mail, Radio West, ABC radio, GWN and WIN TV. This results in feature articles, frequent publicity on the local news & regular interviews with KBULG staff. KBULG aims to receive exposure from a variety of sources ranging from news stories through to general interest and community announcements.

This encourages participation in local landcare activities resulting in greater community involvement and awareness of KBULG’s projects and the local environment.

WEBSITE KBULG continues to update the website with information about KBULG’s recent events, upcoming activities, sponsorship info and how people can be involved with KBULG. The website allows the community and Junior Landcare students to find out more about KBULG. The ‘Downloads’ page allows people to download copies of our pamphlets, newsletters and annual reports, plus more. A new edition to the website is the online membership form which allows visitors to join KBULG directly from the site. The website can be viewed at www.kbulg.org.au DISPLAYS, EXPOS AND FESTIVALS KBULG has regular displays and promotions throughout the year. In 2008 KBULG set up display’s at Coolgardie Day, the Goldfields Spring Festival and Boulder Market Days. KBULG also set up a display for the 2008 Goldfields Mining Expo, courtesy of Western Power. Local Native Plants were made available to community members and informational pamphlets were distributed. KBULG also participated in St Barbara’s Day Festival which gave us an opportunity to wave the Landcare flag, involve Junior Landcare students and acknowledge our sponsors.

GOLDFIELDS ENVIRONMENT MONTH June is Goldfields Environment Month. Events and activities are organised through out the month by KBULG to raise awareness about the world’s most critical environmental issues and to encourage community involvement and participation in looking after the local environment To celebrate World Environment Day on June 5th, KBULG challenged local schools to “wear green and become an environment machine!” Students were asked to discard their uniforms for the day, wear green and pack a zero waste lunch. Through the challenge students learnt the importance of reducing the amount of waste going to landfill. The Goldfields-Esperance Development Commission also took part in the challenge. Participants in the day donated a gold coin to KBULG to help fund future projects within their schools.

PROMOTING LOCAL NATIVE PLANTS KBULG receives many phone calls about gar-dening with local native plants from new and existing residents. Residents are supplied with lists of native trees and shrubs suitable for planting in a Goldfields Garden plus our pamphlets and other reference material. KBULG actively maintains and provides stock lists of nurseries providing and selling local Goldfields native plants. GOLDFIELDS WATERWISE GARDEN POSTER & PAMPHLET

KBULG’s Waterwise Plants poster and Gar-dening with Local Native Plants pamphlet were completed and launched by Environ-ment Minister, Dr Judy Edwards in November 2003. These fantastic resources continue to be distributed within the community and afar. KBULG is looking at up-dating this resource in the near future.

NATIVE PLANT GUIDE The Native Plant Guide was launched late May 2003 and continues to be well received. The book quickly became one of THE books to have if you wanted to learn or identify any local plants. Even local plant ‘experts’ have copies of the book. KBULG produced the guide for local residents, school children and visitors to find out more about the native trees and shrubs of the Goldfields. The book focuses on the flora in Karlkurla Bushland Park and the Goldfields and links in with the existing signage in Kar-lkurla Park. 65 types of plants are featured in the book with a colour photo of each of the species. The book includes a description of each plant including its leaves fruit and flow-ers, the plants common, scientific and Abo-riginal name, a dial showing flowering times, a map indicating where it can be found, and interesting facts and uses of the plant. There is also a CD of KBULG’s Native Plant Guide available.

The books and CD’s are available from the KBULG office, tourist outlets and several other places around town and are continuing to sell well.

NATIVE PLANT GROUP The Native Plant Group was established in late 2004 by local people to learn about the unique Goldfields flora. This has catered for the people in the community wishing to learn more about Kalgoorlie’s unique flora. People can learn how to establish a garden, identify, propagate and grow the local plants. An additional benefit is we now have some extra, hard to get, plants to provide to the general community and to utilise in our community projects. The group has a once-per-year 2 hour sale to clear out the shadehouse in preparation for the next years seeding, allowing members of the public to purchase local species. The groups’ main aims are to:-

• Learn about Kalgoorlie native plants

• Share and hopefully gain knowledge on

the collection, storage, propagation and care of our local natives.

• Increase the number and variety of

local native plants grown in local gardens.

• Share any knowledge we have, &

gain openly.

Plant propagation by the volunteers was successful in the 2007/08 growing season, with thousands of seedlings available for planting in 2008/09. This enabled KBULG to donate thousands of plants to local schools and community groups. The 2008 plant sale was extremely successful with thousands of plants sold. WATERWISE GARDEN COMPETITION Each Spring KBULG organises the annual Waterwise Garden Competition sponsored by KBULG’s core sponsors. Categories for the Competition include residential, commercial / industrial and community. Winners are judged on aesthetics, water efficiency measures, colour and verge maintenance.

The 2008 Water Wise Garden Competition had 31 entries with garden styles varying greatly with native, cottage, cactus, formal and informal gardens were presented for judging.

A garden in the Residential Owner Maintained category was the highest scoring garden in the competition. The garden stood out as lovely, well presented and waterwise. The garden showcased a range of water wise plants, blending both native and exotic plants. The fully reticulated garden contained no lawn and was fully mulched. Whilst being relatively young at just 2 years old, the plants will continue to mature and develop into a beautiful garden. It showed

that a lot of thought has gone into the layout and plantings, with sculptured paths, retaining walls and a diversity that flows throughout the entire garden.

Traveling around and viewing the gardens allowed the judges to see that many Kalgoorlie-Boulder residents are making an effort to have gardens which are suitable to our semi-arid climatic conditions, but are also attractive, well-maintained and aesthetically pleasing. It was great to see that a number of residents are also maintaining their verges and reducing or removing altogether, high water use lawns and gardens.

ANNUAL TREE PLANTING DAY

Karlkurla Bushland Park was targeted for the 2008 July community tree planting day. Approximately 150 people gathered to do their part in greening the goldfields. Over 4000 trees, shrubs and ground covers were planted on the day. Community response was fantastic with the trees and shrubs planted superbly. A variety of hardy species were planted including eucalypts, westringias, and eremophilas.

The day was worthwhile for both environmental and social reasons. It was fantastic to see the Kalgoorlie-Boulder community come together to do their bit for the environment. The planted area will pro-vide a habitat for birds and wildlife, reduce the local dust problems and provide much needed shade in summer for everyone.

Community and corporate groups, mining companies, families and individuals joined together for a common cause, working for a better environment. Employees from Kanowna Belle Gold Mine were awarded the Corporate Challenge Award and the 1st Boulder Scout Group were awarded a prize for their team spirit and their amazing tree planting song. Prizes were also given to the youngest and oldest tree planters and the family with the biggest turnout.

As per previous years, these days are only made possible by the huge amount of support received from sponsors, volunteers and the community. KBULG thanks everyone who helped make the tree planting day a success.

Sponsors who helped out and made these days possible were:

• City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder for pre

paring and mulching the sites and laying all the reticulation, a huge job over many weeks.

WEED COMPETITION

Once again the Community participated in helping to tackle the huge caltrop problem in Kalgoorlie-Boulder. The City of Kalgoorlie Boulder and KBULG again organised the “Cash for Caltrop” weed competition and gave away over $1,000 in cash prizes in order to encourage community support.

Due to weather and the efficiency of the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder weed spraying programme, caltrops were a little harder to find around Kalgoorlie-Boulder than in previous years. However this did little to eter the enthusiastic participants who collected over 750 kilograms of caltrop as part of the annual competition.

Although KBULG promotes the Cash for Caltrop competition to create incentive, the major focus is on education and public awareness, and for the community to be able to recognise and remove the invasive weed.

KBULG also continues to distribute a Weeds pamph le t t o membe rs o f t he Kalgoorlie-Boulder community in our effort to educate the community about local weeds.

REGENERATION ZONE MANAGEMENT A series of fenced Regeneration Zones encompassing an area of approximately 3,500 hectares form a 'green belt' around Kalgoorlie-Boulder. These Regeneration Zones were established by KBULG’s predecessor, the Goldfields Dust Abatement Committee, with the aim of controlling the dust storms of the early 1970’s. The now developed Karlkurla Park was one of the original Regeneration Zones. The Regeneration Zones are still managed by KBULG. The Regeneration Zones are mostly remnant native bushland in close proximity to the City. KBULG encourages the community to use the zones for passive recreation. Many members of the community are keen to see these areas preserved as they enjoy their walks in the local bush close to their home. Unique flora is found in the zones including several different types of Eremophila, some of which have very restricted distribution.

Trail bikes and stolen cars are a constant problem in the Regeneration Zones. Woodcutting and rubbish dumping are also major management issues that need to be addressed. Some of the Regeneration Zones have been taken up for urban development as the City expands. However, KBULG is working with the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder and planners in recommending which areas are of the highest conservation value and should be preserved. These zones have been extensively mapped. A record of the areas where fencing has been replaced has been kept on a GIS system. We have now started to identify patterns of problem areas. In addition some new fence lines have been established, and new signs erected to replace damaged ones. All new fencing is being installed to a new standard to minimise damage to the rest of each length of fence, should damage from vandalism occur.

KARLKURLA BUSHLAND PARK Karlkurla Bushland Park was a community project, co-ordinated by KBULG and officially handed to the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder in late 2002 for management and maintenance. KBULG continues to promote the Native Plant Guide, which details the Goldfields species found in the park and produces the self guided walk pamphlets. We also regularly conduct guided bushland walks and nightstalks through the park for local Junior Landcare students, visiting Camp School students, interested groups and community members. Several Cleanup Days are held through out the year. This year a clean up was held on the 1st of March for Clean Up Australia Day. KBULG aslo co-sponsored a Clean Up For Your Future Day in May which saw lots of rubbish

collected in the park. As a result of the Soroptimists targeting the same weed each year they have significantly reduced the amount of “Paddy melon” found in the park. Both the 2008 Annual Community Tree Planting and the 2009 Junior Landcare Tree Planting took place at Karlkurla Bushland Park. As well as revegetating bare areas of the park, the tree planting sites will provide habitat for local fauna species and help to combat dust. KBULG has been involved in liaising with the planners, engineers and site managers of the Karlkurla subdivisions adjacent to the park. On-site meetings have been held with KBULG members regarding drainage, significant trees, firebreaks and rehabilitation. KBULG has also been working with council to facilitate new walking paths throughout the park. KBULG is currently working on signage for the new paths, which will hopefully be completed by the end of December.

RECYCLING

KBULG is a keen promoter of recycling in Kalgoorlie-Boulder and encourages the community to embrace the rethink, reduce and recycle philosophy.

As part of Recycling Week 2008 KBULG conducted a Zero Waste Wednesday Lunch challenge to instil waste-wise values among local students and the community. Over 1,500 students participated in the challenge and learnt how to reduce the amount of rubbish in their lunchbox.

KBULG continues to distribute the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Community Recycling Directory created in conjunction with the City of Kalgoorlie Boulder. KBULG is continuing to push for business / commercial recycling. KBULG is also involved in organising Clean Up Australia Day activities for local groups, Tidy WA in May Day, and Schools Tidy Days in Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

KBULG's vision is to work for a better environment and better lifestyle for the people of the Goldfields by encouraging communication, education and participation.

The group aims to involve the community in all its activities and is committed to working with other community groups, schools, business and government to achieve its goals. The Kalgoorlie-Boulder Urban Landcare Group, previously the Goldfields Dust Abatement Committee, has conserved and established native vegetation in the Goldfields for over 30 years. Due to past, present and future impacts and threats to the Kalgoorlie-Boulder environment, planning and promoting

our activities and the need for conservation and rehabilitation of the Goldfields environment is given high priority.
