Section A
Plan of action chalked out by the IQAC in the
beginning of the year towards quality enhancement
The introduction of the Choice Based Credit Semester System (CBCSS) by the
Mahatma Gandhi University propelled its affiliated colleges towards orienting
students, faculty and ministerial staff in the direction of internalizing the system.
Therefore, the main aim of the IQAC for the academic year was to adopt new
teaching - learning and evaluation practices that would facilitate a gradual switch over
from the annual to the CBCSS. Accordingly, it was planned-
1. To encourage teachers to participate in orientation workshops organized by the
University
2. To conduct an orientation programme for all the teachers under the leadership
of Prof. A.S. Varghese, Head, Department of Physics, CMS College, who was
a key proponent of the CBCSS at the University level
3. To persuade the ministerial staff to attend orientation sessions arranged by the
M.G. University and Government Departments.
2
Section B:
1 Activities reflecting the goals and objectives of
the institution
The vision of the institution is embodied in its motto “Thy Word is Truth”. The main
objective of the institution is to impart liberal education without any discrimination.
The activities of the academic year that reflect the institutional goals are as follows:
1. Faculty members took up key positions at the University level, during the
course of redesigning the undergraduate curriculum and its periodic review
based on real time needs.
2. Students were oriented and guided well in the direction of career
opportunities.
3. In view of their holistic development, students were exposed to counseling and
value based education through tutorials, personality development sessions and
the services of in-house counselor. The chapel within the campus is open for
devotions and silent meditation.
2. New academic programmes initiated (UG and PG)
During the year under review no new academic programmes were initiated
3. Innovations in curricular design and transaction
Curriculum is provided and updated by parent University (Mahatma Gandhi
University, Kottayam, Kerala.) Faculty members use Information and Communication
Technology integrated teaching methods as well as modern audio-visual methods for
curricular transactions.
2009 –’10 is the implementation year of the Choice based Course Credit Semester
System (CBCSS), as per directive of the University. Mahatma Gandhi University
3
made use of the services and expertise of many teachers of CMS College holding key
positions in various University Boards. (The details are given in Appendix I)
Specific Involvement in the Restructuring Process
The restructuring process of a major number of Undergraduate programs in the Arts,
Science and Commerce streams of the Mahatma Gandhi University was with the
active participation of the teachers from this college. The involvement of the
institution and teachers can be seen at four levels:
Piloting
In 1998, the Department of Malayalam designed and launched, with the approval of
the University, the Model II – Malayalam Language and Literature course for
Undergraduates. With its features of being module based, semester structured and IT
oriented, it served as the sole model within the University for initiating the
restructured programmes.
Resource Personnel
Prof. A S Varghese (Dept. of Physics) was a person with key involvement in the
restructuring process. His contributions include levels such as:
Member of the Senate of M.G. University from -2005-- to ----2010
Moderator in the State level Workshop on Restructuring Undergraduate Programme,
University of Kannur.
Resource Person, Choice Based Course Credit Semester System, State Higher
Education Council, Govt. of Kerala
Resource Person, Choice Based Course- Credit Semester System for Universities in

Dr. Abraham Samuel K (Dept. of Zoology) undertook the responsibility of
preparing the syllabi for three papers in the restructured programme: General
Methodology and Perspectives; Biodiversity in modern Systematics; and
Environmental Biology, Toxicology and Disaster Management.
Dr. Miriam Mani (Dept. of Family and Community Science) was member of Core
Committee for restructuring the syllabus of Family and Community Science at the B
Sc CBCSS level, and designed syllabi for two papers – Dynamics of Extension; and
Mass Communication and Journalism.

Attendance in Workshop
A workshop on “Restructuring of Undergraduate Courses into Semester and Credit
System was conducted on 10 June 2009 for all teachers of the college. Prof. A S
Varghese, Dept. of Physics, led the sessions.
4. Inter-disciplinary programmes started
The Departments of Zoology, Botany and Chemistry initiated a Certificate course in
Apiculture, aiming at developing the same as an Add-On programme for
undergraduate students.
6
5. Examination reforms implemented
Mahatma Gandhi University conducts semester-end and year-end examinations;
examination reforms are also made by the University from time to time. In the
college, model examinations were conducted in the same pattern as that of university
examinations in order to familiarize the students with the exam pattern.
Grading system was successfully implemented for First year Undergraduate
programs. Tests for internal evaluation are conducted in a totally decentralized
method. Question setting, printing, invigilation and evaluation are all carried out by
the Departments concerned.
The Department of Botany implemented a system of Quick Review and Surprise
Tests as part of internal assessment. This was proven successful in improving the
level of student alertness in classroom learning, as a technique of formative
evaluation.
6. Candidates qualified: NET/SLET/GATE etc.
Every post-graduate Department conducts coaching for NET / GATE. Of special
mention is the Physics Gurukulam, under the initiative of Dr. Rajan K John. This is a
residential endeavor by the Department of Physics, where students are offered in-
house training free of cost, aiming at NET, SLET, GATE and JEST exams. The
following table highlights the results achieved during the year under consideration.
