MEMOIRS
1. Rev. Johs Ercanbrack died at his residence, in Bronson, Mich.,
March 7, 1852, aged sixty-one years and eleven months.
He was converted to God in early life, and joined the M. E.
Church. He entered the Christian ministry in 1817, and continued
in the same until death.
In his various fields of labor, and in the different stations which he
occupied in the Church of God, he acquitted himself honorably and
usefully ; and his name is as ointment poured forth. Few men in
western Michigan have been more beloved than this venerable Father
in Israel. He emphatically loved to preach the gospel. He died in
peace and holy triumph. May his mantle fall on the surviving mem-
bers of the Michigan Conference.
Jodson Dwight Colliks, Superintendent of the China Mission,
was born in the town of Rose, Wayne Co., N. Y., and came to Michi-
gan when eight years of age. He was blessed with an early religious
education, which secured his youth from vicious habits, and eventua-
ted in his conversion, under the gospel ministrations of Rev. E. H.
Richer, at the age of fourteen, when he united with the M. E.
Church. Love of learning seemed to be an inherent principle of his
nature, and manifested itself in persevering, successful efforts to obtain
a sound collegiate education. He entered the Michigan University at
its first organization, in 1841, and graduated with high honor with its
first class in 1845. In college he maintained his christian integrity,
and, by his uniform piety, his well-governed life, and consistent efforts
to promote the interests of religion, commanded the respect and ex*
cited the admiration of his friends and associates. He labored
efficiently as Bible Distributor, S. S. Superintendent, Class Leader,
Exhorter, and Local Preacher. He was received on trial in the Michi-
gan Conference, in Sept. 1845, and appointed a teacher in the Wes-
leyan Seminary at Albion. At the session of Conference in 1846, he
was sent to Tompkins circuit with the expectation of receiving an
appointment as Missionary to China, which he did in the spring of
1847, when he immediately set out for the scene of his future
labors, where he arrived in August of that year. During three
years and nine months, which comprised the time of his stay in China,
he devoted himself to his work with a zeal and earnestness that knew
no limits, but his ability and strength. But his robust and vigorous
constitution yielded to the unfriendly influences of the climate, and a

severe attack of disease brought him nigh to the grave, so that when
the state of lis health permitted it, in accordance with medical advice,
he returned to his native land—to regain his health, as he fondly
hoped, for the prosecution of his work in that great empire of idola-
try, but, alas! to suffer and die. He reached Michigan in time to
visit his brethren of the Conference at the session of 1851, when the
entire change wrought.in his appearance, bis emaciated looks, and
above all the joy and tenderness with which he greeted them, melted
them to tears. For eight months he patiently suffered the will of
God, though his grief at the thought that he could no more return to
China to prosecute his missionary labors, was more painful than the
prospect of death, and, in May, 1952, at his father's house, in Lyndon,
Washtenaw Co., Mich., surrounded by his friends, and amid the sweet
associations of home, he quietly passed away from the scenes and toils
of earth to the infinite rewards and felicities of Heaven, at the early
age of twenty-eight.
Bro. Collins was a man strong both in his bodily and mental consti-
tution. His self-preparation for life's earnest work included physical
as well as intellectual training. His understanding was clear, sound,
powerful, though not rapid, in its action. His reflection and reasoning
faculties were searching and comprehensive, ever reaching after prin-
ciples and tracing out their connections. His conversational powers
eminently qualified him for imparting knowledge, indicating in their
action logical thought and accurate perceptions, rather than descriptive
fancy and rhetorical abilities. His speech was instructive rather than
amusing, his language argumentative rather than eloquent The en-
tire structure of his mind was Saxon and philosophic, positive in its
qualities and high-toned in its sentiments. His capacities, in a word,
were those of thought, of reason, of energy, of action.
Bro. Coilins' religious character was of the highest order, combining
the noblest principles with the purest affections. His was a manly,
cheerful piety, an unwavering integrity of purpose, a lofty aim and end
of action, harmonious attributes of excellence, elevated conceptions of
duty, a heart fixed upon the cross, and a life radiant with purity. His
christian love was rich in its elements, essentially missionary in its
character, intense and regular in its action; and his christian faith was
simple and majestic, allying his existence in blissful fellowship with
the infinite existence of Jehovah-Jbsus. His goodness of heart was
truly great and fruitful of all active virtues. In him was not only a
bare rational perception, but also a real consciousness of the " beauty
of holiness."
As a man, he was manly; as a christian, he was Christ-like; as a
minister, though youthful, he yet possessed elements of great ability
and usefulness, and, as a missionary, he was a model. Having a stout
physical frame, a richly-endowed, well-balanced, cultivated mind, and
a temperament susceptible of warm and high emotions yet singularly
free from rashness and excitement, had he lived to develop his mind
and character in the missionary work, he would have been a star of
the first magnitude in the dark heavens of China. Years before our
Church established her mission there, and while prosecuting his colle-
giate studies, he pursued a course of reading on China preparatory to

a whole life of missiouary labor among its benighted millions, and his
mind had no rest until it was actually surrounded by their darkness
and misery. No temporary impulse led him thither, no transient fer-
vid feelings urged him to a life of toil in that distant land, but a per-
manent conviction of duty possessed his mind, one great idea of su- •
preme service to Christ controlled his whole existence, and carried all
his thoughts, all his affections, all his impulses, to that extensive terri-
tory of heathenism, and his martyr-like attachments to his work were
only loosened by death—to be transferred from the cross to a crown of
righteousness. In the very embraces of death, when Heaven was
opening its glories upon his mind, his heart was with his brethren in
that vast field of missions—he preferred to die where he so earnestly
desired to live. As a missionary, then, we embalm and cherish his
memory in our holiest recollections of human character and excellence.
While the truth and love of Christ dwell within us, in our heart of
hearts we will remember tijee, Judson Dwight Collins. Thy name
shall not perish, and thy beloved China shall be redeemed! Thanks
to the Infinite for the legacy of thy character and example to the
Michigan Conference.

arising therefrom, shall annually be expended for the support of a Pro-

4. Resolved, That each and every minister of this Conference is
hereby constituted an agent to solicit donations to said fund, and is
earnestly requested to co-operate in this enterprise, with the committee

field, were appointed.]
6. Resolved, That the above enterprise is affectionately and most
earnestly recommended to the favorable consideration of the members
of our church, and they are hereby urgently solicited to contribute to

SABBATH SCHOOLS.
1. Resolved, That Sabbath Sc hools, when properly conducted, are
among the first instrumentalities for diffusing a knowledge of the
Holy Scriptures, and accomplishing the great ends of the Christian
ministry.
2. Resolved, That whenever at all practicable, it is highly desira-

minds of superintendents and teachers.
5. Resolved, That we do, as a Conference, and will, as individu-

Note.—It will be seen from the foregoing table, that several charges have not made
any report at all, and many more are very defective. Why is this ? Are there no
schools in the former, and are there no libraries in others, &a. 1 Or is it because
those who have had charge of them, hare not informed themselves in regard to them t
According to the resolutions adopted by the Conference, theso schools are regarded as
a great means for the renovation of the world. Whore can a minister accomplish
more good, with tho same expenditure of timo and labor, than in connection with a
Sabbath School? How can he hotter sccuro for himself a warm place in the affec-
tions of his people, than in his attention to their children in tho Sabbath School!
Surely, brethren, wo ought to giro sufficient attention to this matter, to secure, at
least, a full and accurate report each yoar. One other thing is manifest, and calls for
our careful attention—that is, the smallness of the reported number of conversions.
Why is this 1 Do not superintendents, teachers, and ministers labor for this direct
object 7
The amount contributed for tho Union is too small; besides, many charges have
done nothing at all. Cow.
