Cappella PratensisJosquin des Prez paid homage to his predecessors through the use of imitation. By thesame token, subsequent composers played this game as a deliberate tribute, utilizing thesame texts, melodies, and other characteristics of his music. The acclaimed CappellaPratensis, known for their period interpretations, makes their Miller debut with a programanchored by Josquin masterpieces and exploring some of the great polyphonic works of theperiod by composers who inspired Josquin and those who were later inspired by him.

The vocal ensemble Cappella Pratensis – literally ‘Cappella des  prés’ – champions themusic of Josquin des Prez and the polyphonists of the 15th and 16th centuries. Based in theDutch city of ’s-Hertogenbosch, the group combines historically informed performancepractice with inventive programs and original interpretations based on scholarly researchand artistic insight. As in Josquin’s time, the members of Cappella Pratensis perform froma central music stand, singing from the original mensural notation scored in a largechoirbook. This approach, together with attention to such factors as the chant origins of thepolyphonic repertoire, the modal system on which it is based, the influence of solmization, and the linguistic basis, creates an intense engagement with the music.

Besides regular appearances at concert venues in the Netherlands and Belgium, CappellaPratensis has performed at leading international festivals and concert series throughoutEurope, North America and Japan. The group has been ensemble-in-residence at HarvardUniversity, the Fondation Royaumont (France), and Boston University, giving courses, presenting concerts and working with distinguished musicians. The group’s CD recordingshave met with critical acclaim and distinctions from the press (including the Diapason d’Orand the Prix Choc).

Cappella Pratensis also passes on insights into vocal polyphony and performance fromoriginal notation – both among professionals and amateurs – through masterclasses, multimedia presentations, collaboration with institutions, an annual summer course aspart of the Laus Polyphoniae festival in Antwerp, and training young singers within thegroup itself. The ensemble is a partner with the universities of Leuven and Oxford in thedigitization and valorization of all the brilliant musical sources made in the workshops ofthe early sixteenth-century music scribe Petrus Alamire.
