yÜÉÅ à{x ctáàÉÜ JESUS SAID: LET THE CHILDREN COME TO ME

On two consecu ve Saturdays, July 25th and August 1st, at four special liturgies, our Second Grade children came to Jesus in a very significant, life-changing way. They received the Lord Jesus in Holy Communion for the first me in their young Catholic lives. It was a day and a moment in which they came to Jesus, and he came to them, as the Bread of Life. Our young parishioners are especially thankful, as am I, for the dedica on of their teachers in the classroom, bringing to the children an understanding of the importance of Sunday Mass. In this regard, their parents are the most decisive influence upon their own children’s forma on in and deepening life-long apprecia on of the need to a end Mass at least every Sunday. Likewise, these children recently came to par cipate in the sacrament of reconcilia on. Their frui ul par cipa on presupposes a basic knowledge of the reality of personal sin and the need we all have of knowing and asking for God’s forgiveness. This was a delicate and most necessary part of their overall prepara on for this day of First Holy Communion. Again, I thank our teachers Pa Biernat, Krissy Knightly, Dina Wool, Stephanie Lucas, Jordan Skarr, Alison Chandler, Angela Dablin, Kim Cuenca, and Aida Aragones and the children’s parents for their pa ent and most helpful instruc on to them this year. Nor can we forget the assistance of our Director of Religious Educa on, Jacquie Lackaff, who tended to mul ple details throughout the school year and each special First Communion Day Mass as well. God bless you all!

The celebra on of the Eucharist tes fies to the world not only that God has visited His people, but that He has remained among His people in this Sacrament of sacraments. As Catholics, we need to live this reality. Doing so calls for words, of course, but it is crucial to our witness that we act like we deeply believe in what we say we believe. Not “act” as in pu ng on an act. Rather, we must live our Catholic faith with convic on. God’s grace is the most important ingredient, without which we can do nothing. By grace, our rela onship with God is made possible in the first place. Think of the grace first given to us in bap sm. From this beginning it must grow. Only sin can diminish its effec veness and, in the case of serious (i.e. mortal) sin, grace is effec vely driven from us. Grace is the very life of God in the soul. And God cannot dwell, in some co-exis ng way, in the soul that has yielded to even one mortal sin. That’s why serious sin is also called mortal sin. It kills the life of grace in the soul. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states: For a sin to be mortal, three condi ons must together be met: “Mortal sin is sin whose object is grave ma er and which is also commi ed with full knowledge and deliberate consent.” (#1857) Further explana on of these three condi ons is contained in paragraphs 1858-60.

STRENGTHENED BY GRACE TO SERVE OTHERS

Christ would not have given any commands at all to his followers without also providing the means to carry them out. He asked us to do nothing less than preach the Gospel to every na on. This is what the graces of Bap sm, Confirma on, the Eucharist and Penance are all for, as well as the voca onal graces specific to the du es in marriage or ordina on to the priesthood. Strengthened by the sacraments and Gospel, our parish family goes out into a needy world, o en found very close to home, yes, o en right in our own homes. This is where we fulfill our mission first and foremost. This, in turn, produces a s ll greater generosity among you, our parish family, as you give further proof of your love for Christ and one another by the many ways you volunteer to serve the parish. Sincerely,

Fr. Albert

Happy Anniversary

The St. Joseph Parish community joins with couples that are celebra ng the Sacrament of Marriage in the month of August.

Reflec on:

It is true that the founda on on which a good marriage is built upon is uncondi onal Love. However, a marriage is also based upon uncondi onal acceptance. Acceptance of each other’s faults. We are unique individuals and we must strive to be equally unique in the oneness of our marriage, to be forgiving of each other’s faults uncondi onally.

Take me alone with your spouse this week to reflect.

JOLIET, IL—It is not uncommon for father and son to share a voca on or trade. Less common, however, is for father and son to share a voca on as priests in the Catholic Church.

Fr. Peter Infanger’s route to becoming a priest was not a normal one. His wife, Michelle, died in 2013 from breast cancer. He had a career in marke ng for over 30 years and is 65 years old. He has children and grandchildren. And perhaps most unusual of all, his son, Andrew, preceded him on the path to ordina on.

Despite this extraordinary situa on, Fr. Peter felt a call to the priesthood, which he traces to a spiritual awakening in 1989, when he was 34 years old. It was the lowest point in his life, he said. He was struggling at work. Struggling in his marriage to the point that he and his wife, who had two small boys, separated for 10 months. “I was following the world’s way of doing things,” he said. “I was a superficial Catholic. I thought, if I gave God an hour on Sunday and didn't kill anyone or rob a bank, that that was all God was asking.” It was through the urging of a distant cousin, who introduced him to a God who knew him by his name and loved him uncondi onally, that Peter’s faith life started to change. He started reading the Bible, reached out to his wife and reconciled with her. He gradually reordered his priori es in life. But then his wife died suddenly, and all that they had planned for the future had disappeared. Le with a blank slate, some big ques ons popped on his radar: Why was he here on earth? Where was he going next? And what did God want from him? Then, one day, something he had never considered before appeared in the form of a ques on asked by a friend from his men’s group at church: have you thought about becoming a priest?

Peter’s youngest son, Andrew, was in the seminary at the me [he’s now a priest in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee]. Andrew told him there are only three voca ons in life: being single, being married, or having a religious voca on, such as being a priest or religious brother or sister. A er a period of discernment, he decided to pursue life as a priest and at age 59, followed in his son’s footsteps and entered the seminary. Becoming a priest in the Catholic Church requires a vow of celibacy, and so the case of a father and son both being priests is an extreme rarity and requires special circumstances. Married men are not permi ed into the priesthood, except in certain circumstances, such as a candidate who converted from another faith, or, as is the case with Father Peter, a widower.

The hardest part about the path to the priesthood, he said, was le ng go. “In the [real] world, you think it’s all on your shoulders,” he said. “In the spiritual world, we have to lay down our will and do God’s will, not my will, but thy will be done. That’s been the hardest thing to get used to.”

Appropriately on Father’s Day weekend, Fr. Andrew Infanger was in a endance for his dad’s ordina on. “To have my dad as a priest is basically just like having my dad as ‘my dad.’ It’s not too much different than before, which I suppose might not be the answer people expect,” Father Andrew said. “I think from the outsider perspec ve, people find it more interes ng than I do.” Father Andrew does note one excep on, however. “I might not go to you for Confession… unless it is an emergency. Then I’ll stop by.”

Father Peter looks forward to serving the people of the Diocese of Joliet. “I’m hoping that my life experience of being married for 34 years and having children will help me minister to families in the parish, and I know that God uses everything that we do to help further His Kingdom. I’m grateful for everything that’s happened. I’m grateful for my family, my wife, and I’m looking forward helping out and being part of [God’s] plan.”

Gospel Reading for Sunday, August 9 Ma hew 14:22-23

A er he had fed the people, Jesus made the disciples get into a boat and precede him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. A er doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When it was evening he was there alone. Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it. During the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them walking on the sea. When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. “It is a ghost,” they said, and they cried out in fear. At once Jesus spoke to them, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” Peter said to him in reply, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw how strong the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught Peter, and said to him, “O you of li le faith, why did you doubt?” A er they got into the boat, the wind died down. Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying, “Truly, you are the Son of God.”
