Description and operating instructions Industrial ETHERNET Rail Switch 2 The Rail Switches – RS2-3TX/2FX EEC – RS2-3TX/2FX-SM EEC – RS2-4TX/1FX EEC – RS2-4TX/1FX-ST EEC – RS2-4TX/1FX-SM EEC – RS2-4TX EEC in short RS2-xTX/xFX EEC, are switches especially designed for use in industrial environments. They support ETHERNET 10 MBit/s and Fast ETHERNET 100 MBit/s. The Rail Switch modules support switched ETHERNET networks in accordance with IEEE standard 802.3 using copper and fiber optic technology. The switch modules are plugged onto the standard DIN rail. The RS2-3TX/2FX… modules have three 10/100 MBit/s twisted pair ports (10/100BASE-TX, RJ45 connectors) and two 100 MBit/s fiber optic ports (100BASE-FX, Duplex SC connector). It is possible to connect up to three DTEs or other TP/TX network segments to the TP/TX ports using twisted pair cabling. Two further DTEs or optical network components can be connected to the fiber ports. Safety GuidelinesPower Supply

� Switch the basic devices on only whenthe case is closed.

z Warning!The devices may only be connectedto the supply voltage shown on thetype plate.

The devices are designed for opera-tion with a safety extra-low volta-ge.Thus, they may only be connec-ted to the supply voltage connec-tions and to the signal contact withPELV circuits or alternatively SELVcircuits with the voltage restrictionsin accordance with IEC/EN 60950.

� For the case where the module is opera-ted with external power supply: Use only asafety extra-low voltage in accordance withIEC/EN 60950 to power the system.

� First of all you connect the protectingline, before you establish the furtherconnections. When you remove connec-tions, you disconnect the protecting linelast.

� Relevant for North America:The subject unit is to be suppplied by aClass 2 power source complying with therequirements of the National ElectricalCode, table 11(b). If power is redundantsupplied (two individual power sources) thepower sources together should comply withthe requirements of the National ElectricalCode, table 11 (b).

� Relevant for North America:Power, input and output (I/O) wiring mustbe in accordance with Class I, Division 2wiring methods [Article 501-4(b) of theNational Electrical Code, NFPA 70] and inaccordance with the authority having juris-diction.

Peripheral equipment must be suitable forthe location it is used in.

Use 60/75°C or 75°C copper(CU)wire only.

Safety GuidelinesShielding Ground

Note: The shielding ground of the connec-table twisted pairs lines is connected to thefront panel as a conductor.

� Beware of possible short circuits whenconnecting a cable section with conductiveshielding braiding.

Safety Guidelines Housing

z Warning!Only technicians authorized by Hir-schmann are permitted to open thehousing.

Note: The device is grounded via the sepa-rated ground screw. It is located on the leftunder the front panel.

� Make sure that the electrical installationmeets local or nationally applicable safetyregulations.

z Warning!The ventilation slits must not becovered so as to ensure free air cir-culation.

The distance to the ventilation slotsof the housing has to be a minimumof 10 cm.

Never insert pointed objects (thinscrewdrivers, wires, etc.) into theinside of the subrack! This especial-ly applies to the area behind thesocket connectors. Failure to obser-ve this point may result in injuriescaused by electric shocks.

Note: If installed in a living area or officeenvironment, the device must be operatedexclusively in switch cabinets with fire pro-tection characteristics according to EN60950.

Note: The housing has to be mounted inupright position.

z Warning!The device may only be operated inthe listed surrounding air tempera-ture and at the listed relative air humidity (non condensing).

� The installation location is to be selec-ted so as to ensure compliance with the cli-matic limits listed in the Technical Data.

1. Functional description

The 10/100BASE-T(X) ports of a RS2-xTX/xFX EEC represent a terminal connec-tion for the connected LAN segment. Youcan connect single devices or complete net-work segments.

1.1 FRAME SWITCHING FUNCTIONSStore and ForwardAll data received by the RS2-xTX/xFX EECfrom the system bus or at the ports is stored and checked for validity. Frames > 1536 bytes as well as fragments (< 64bytes) are discarded. The RS2-xTX/xFX EECforwards the valid frames.

Multi address capabilityA RS2-xTX/xFX EEC learns all sourceaddresses per port. Only packets with– unknown addresses– addresses learnt at this port– a multi/broadcast addressin the destination address field are sent tothis port.A RS2-xTX/xFX EEC learns up to 1,000addresses. This becomes necessary if morethan one terminal device is connected toone or more ports. In this way several inde-pendent subnetworks can be connected to aRS2-xTX/xFX EEC.

Learnt addressesA RS2-xTX/xFX EEC monitors the age of thelearned addresses. The RS2-xTX/xFX EECdeletes address entries from the addresstable which exceed a certain age (300seconds).Note: Restarting deletes the learnedaddress entries.

Tagging (IEEE 802.1Q)The IEEE 802.1 Q standard designates theVLAN tag to be included in a MAC dataframe for the VLAN and prioritizing func-tions. The VLAN tag consists of 4 bytes (2bytes tag protocol identifier TPID, 2 bytestag control information TCI). It is insertedbetween the source address field and thetype field. Data packets with a VLAN tag aretransmitted unchanged by the RS2-xTX/xFXEEC.

1.2 SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS OF THE TP/TX INTERFACELink controlThe RS2-xTX/xFX EEC monitors the connec-ted TP/TX line segments for short-circuits orinterrupts using regular Idle signals inaccordance with IEEE standard 802.310/100BASE-T/TX. The RS2-xTX/xFX EECdoes not transmit any data to a TP/TX seg-ment from which it does not receive an Idlesignal.

Note: A non-occupied interface is assessedas a line interrupt. The TP/TX line to termi-nal equipment which is switched off is like-wise assessed as a line interrupt as the de-energised bus coupler cannot transmit Idlesignals.

Auto polarity exchangeIf the receive line pair is incorrectly connec-ted (RD+ and RD- switched) polarity is auto-matically reversed.

AutocrossingThe RS2-xTX/xFX EEC detects the transmitand receive pairs (MDI, MDI-X). The RS2-xTX/xFX EEC automatically con-figures its port for the correct transmit andreceive pins. Consequently it does not matter whether you connect devices using a cross-over or straight cable.

1.3 SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS OF THEF/O INTERFACELink controlThe RS2-xTX/xFX EEC monitors the connec-ted F/O line for interrupts using idle signalsduring frame pauses in accordance withIEEE standard 802.3 100BASE-FX. The RS2-xTX/xFX EEC transmits no data to a F/Oline from which it is receiving no idle signal.

Low Light DetectionIf the optical input power decreases belowthe low light threshold the transmit andreceive path will be disabled for data andthe idle signal will be transmitted.

Far-End FaultThe optical transmission distance of theRS2-xTX/xFX EEC can be monitored inreceiving direction as well as in transmitting

direction, if the other side also supports Far-End Fault. If the other side does not supportFar-End Fault, the optical transmissiondistance is monitored only in receivingdirection.Far-End Fault is sent, if the optical inputpower at the optical port has fallen underthe low light level. If Far-End Fault is re-ceived, the link stays inactive (DA/STAT LEDdark).

1.4 FURTHER FUNCTIONS AND FEATURESResetThe RS2-xTX/xFX EEC will be reset by thefollowing action:– input voltages fall below a threshold

100 Mbit/s connection (FX port)The 100 MBit/s ports of the RS2-xTX/xFX EEC,- one port on the RS2-4TX/1FX…- two ports on the RS2-3TX/2FX… supportthe IEEE 802.3 100BASE-FX FDX standard.They use a duplex SC connector or a STconnector (on RS2-4TX/1FX-ST EEC). Each100 MBit/s port allows one further DTE oran optical network component to beconnected.

5pin terminal blockThe supply voltage and the indicatorcontact are connected via a 5pin terminalblock. If the terminal block is fitted thewrong way round, the device will still workcorrectly.

z Warning!The RS2-xTX/xFX EEC equipmentsare designed for operation with asafety extra-low voltage. Thus, theymay only be connected to the sup-ply voltage connections with PELVcircuits or alternatively SELV circuitswith the voltage restrictions inaccordance with IEC/EN 60950.

1.6 INTERFACES10/100 MBit/s connection (TP port)The 10/100 Mbit ports of the RS2-xTX/xFXEEC (8-pin shielded R45 sockets),- three ports on the RS2-3TX/2FX…- four ports on the RS2-4TX/1FX…allow DTEs or independent network seg-ments complying with the standards IEEE802.3 100BASE-TX / 10BASE-T to beconnected. These ports support autonego-tiation, the autopolarity function andautocrossing.

The socket casings are electrically connec-ted to the front panel of the RS2-xTX/xFXEEC.

– Voltage supply: Redundant voltage sup-plies are supported. Both inputs aredecoupled. There is no load distribution.With redundant supply, the power packsupplies the RS2-xTX/xFX EEC only withthe higher output voltage. The supply vol-tage is electrically isolated from the hou-sing.

– Indicator contact: The indicator contact is used to supervisethe functions of the RS2-xTX/xFX EEC andthus facilitates remote diagnosis withoutmanagement software.Contact interrupt indicates the followingby means of a potential-free indicatorcontact (relay contact, closed circuit):– the failure of at least one of the two

supply voltages (supply voltage 1 or 2 < 9.6 V).

– a permanent fault in the RS2-xTX/xFXEEC (internal voltage supply).

– the faulty link status of at least one port.The indication of the link state on theRS2-xTX/xFX EEC can be masked on aport-by-port basis using the DIP swit-ches LA1 to LA5 (LA1 to LA4 on RS2-4TX EEC).State of delivery: link test is activated.

1.7 CONTROLS5-pole DIP switch (Suppressing the link states)With a DIP switch on the front panel of theRS2-xTX/xFX EEC the indication of the linkstates by the indicator contact can be sup-pressed port by port. Using the switchesLA1 to LA5 (LA1 to LA4 on RS2-4TX EEC),the indication of the link states can be sup-pressed. Switch position „ON“: the indication of thelink state is not suppressed, that is the indi-cator contact indicates the unvalid link.State of delivery: LA1 to LA5 (LA1 to LA4 on RS2-4TX EEC) in position „ON“ (position 1).

2. Configuration

2.1 CONNECTING DTE AND OTHERNETWORK SEGMENTSIt is possible to connect up to three DTEs orother TP/TX network segments to the10/100 Mbit/s ports of the RS2-3TX/2FX…using twisted pair cabling. Two further dataterminal equipments or optical networkcomponents can be connected at 100 Mbit/sto the optical ports using fiber optic cable.It is possible to connect up to four DTEs orother TP/TX network segments to the10/100 Mbit/s ports of the RS2-4TX/1FX…using twisted pair cabling. One further dataterminal equipment or optical network com-ponent can be connected at 100 Mbit/s tothe optical port using fiber optic cable. It is possible to connect up to four DTEs orother TP/TX network segments to the10/100 Mbit/s ports of the RS2-4TX EECusing twisted pair cabling.(ref. Fig. 4).

3. Assembly, startup procedureand dismantling

3.1 UNPACKING, CHECKING� Check whether the package was deliver-ed complete (see scope of delivery).� Check the individual parts for transportdamage.

z Warning!Use only undamaged parts!

3.2 ASSEMBLYThe equipment is delivered in a ready-to-operate condition. The following procedureis appropriate for assembly:

� Pull the terminal block off the RS2-xTX/xFX EEC and wire up the supply volta-ge.� Fit the RS2-xTX/xFX EEC on a 35 mmstandard DIN rail to DIN EN 50 022.� Attach the upper snap-on slide bar ofthe RS2-xTX/xFX EEC to the standard DINrail and press it down until it locks into posi-tion.� Fit the signal lines.

Notes:– The front panel of the RS2-xTX/xFX EEC is

grounded via a separate ground connec-tion.

– Do not open the housing.

– The shielding ground of the twisted paircables is electrically connected to the frontpanel.

3.3 STARTUP PROCEDURE� You start up the RS2-xTX/xFX EEC byconnecting the supply voltage via the 5-pinterminal block.

3.4 DISMANTLING� To take the RS2-xTX/xFX EEC off theISO/DIN rail, insert a screwdriver horizontal-ly under the housing into the locking slide,pull it (without tipping the screwdriver)downwards and lift the RS2-xTX/xFX EECupwards.
