EASTER MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION

During Holy Week, as we move from the struggle of Good Friday to the joy and promise of Easter Sunday, we are challenged to move beyond the shadows of indifference toward compassionate action, to proclaim by our actions that life is stronger than death. All of us in our commitment to Catholic education are encouraged to inspire our students to overcome the fear and division we experience so often in our world and to build community which celebrates the profound mystery of our faith.

Christ has died Christ is risen

Christ will come again

Together, as a Catholic community, let us join ourselves to the Risen Christ, to work for the healing and transformation of our planet earth, our society, and all relationships according to the values of the Gospel. Let us rejoice in the risen Jesus in our midst as we affirm new life and growth around us.

Special blessings are extended to you, your family, and friends during this Easter Season.

The Director of Education has been authorized to enter into an agreement with the City of Toronto Public Health Department to allow Toronto Public Health to use up to 40 schools as vaccination clinics in the event of an influenza pandemic. Physical education activities in elementary school The Board received an update on activities in elementary schools. All principals, health and physical education department heads and athletic representatives were in-serviced on physical activity action planning in the 2002-2003 school year. Since that time 112 TCDSB schools have joined the Health Action Team initiative. The team’s goal is to identify health issues impacting on students and to develop plans to address those issues through enhanced physical education opportunities and nutrition programming. Professional Learning Centres in Health and Physical Education were established in four regional schools to design and deliver a wide range of learning opportunities for TCDSB teachers in the area of Health and Physical Education. During the 2004-2005 school year, $800,000 was spent board-wide to obtain equipment and resources required for the delivery of quality programs.

Hope among other things - A mishap leads to courage David Anderson TorontObserver April 5, 2006 Dr. Rubin Carter uses career in helping wrongly accused to inspire students. Former boxer Dr. Rubin "The Hurricane" Carter wants the students he meets to get involved in their world. Carter, 69, is founder of the Association in Defence of the Wrongly Convicted (AIDWYC), a Canadian volunteer organization dedicated to preventing and rectifying wrongful convictions. In 1967, Carter was convicted and sentenced to three life terms, serving almost 20 years until he was dismissed for murders he didn't commit. He convicted of a 1966 triple murder. Carter regularly speaks out for those who have been wrongly accused. He talked to the students of St. Patrick Catholic Secondary School about the importance getting involved. "You are the future," Carter said. "You need to get involved with politics. You need to get involved with your community. You need to get involved with all classes and races." Carter says that it starts with "waking up." So he encouraged the students to get involved at their school, to take advantage of their education. "I am an eighth grade dropout. School teaches you how to think; it formulates your mind and particularly your attitude," Carter said. "So look at what you are doing today and embrace and you'll be surprise in what you get." Carter grabs schools attention The students and staff of St. Patrick Catholic Secondary School http://www.tcdsb.org responded to Carter's speech. Meron Estisanos, 17, said he motivated them. "I think he's a great inspiration," he said. "It's great someone like him overcame being prosecuted for who he was. It really moved me," Estisanos said. Principal Lorraine Travers said Carter really got to those students with his message. "To speak to the kids about his dream and that everyone has a dream. He did an excellent job," Travers said. Carter said that his ordeal and his involvement at AIDWYC have helped him to better understand his purpose in the world. "Being incarcerated for a crime you did not commit is wrong, dead wrong. Being sentenced to death for a crime you did not commit is unthinkable," Carter said. Carter feels that being part of AIDWYC has given those involved a purpose. "The people part of this organization have made a commitment to do what they can give to every human being innocent of their crimes the opportunity to get out of prison and have their crime wiped clean," he said.

community and their loved ones, particularly the following who have died recently... for these we pray:

May the angels lead them into paradise. May the martyrs come to welcome them into the
