Analysis of Music Magazine Questionnaire
By Jenna Grieves
Results from the QuestionnaireI asked 15 people aged between 15-21 to
complete my questionnaires. I did this because that is the age range I am targeting my music magazine at.
Once all of them were completed, I then analysed the results and have uploaded them to this powerpoint.
Gender:For my questionnaires, I
gave them to both genders because we agreed that our magazine would be aimed at both male and females.
From the results we can see that I asked more females than males, this is because there isn’t really many music magazines which appeal to females and include features that they will enjoy reading.

Age Range:For our questionnaire we were
to ask to ask people with a range of ages in between our target audience age range.
We decided that our target audience would be aged between 15-21 so we had to collect results from people aged between 15-21.
The main age range we asked was 16-20. This is because this is our age bracket and we know what people are looking for in a music magazine.

Top 5 Artists:We asked them what their
favourite artists were so that we could get an idea of what other artists would appear in the magazine so that we can link our main article to fit in with the rest of the magazine.
From the results we can see a mixture of artists but the top three were:
- Katy Perry - N-Dubz - Eminem

Pictures or Text:I asked people whether they
would prefer more pictures or text on a double page spread.
I did this because I wanted to find out whether to have more pictures or text on my double page spread.
From the results you can see that everyone voted for pictures rather than text. I think this is because people prefer to look at pictures than read long pieces of text.

Q&A’s or an ArticleI asked our target
audience whether they would prefer to read an interview with a ‘top celebrity’ in and question and answer or article form.
From the results we can see that they would prefer to read it as an article

Do you want to know about gigs:I asked the question if
they wanted to know about upcoming gigs about the artists they like.
From the results we can see that the majority of people do what to know therefore this shall appear as a regular feature in the magazine.
YesNo
Do you read music magazines:I think that this is one of
the most important questions I asked because it allowed me to find out whether anyone read music magazines.
From this I found out that only a couple of people read music magazines. This means I have to design something that will draw the target audience to read the magazine.
YesNo
If yes please state:I asked my target audience that if they answered
yes to the question ‘Do you read music magazines?’I did this because I want to know what sorts of
music they were interested in and the layouts of those magazines to see if I could make mine similar to make them buy my magazine rather than their normal ones.
The answers to that question were: - NME - Kerrang! - MOJO
Cost for the magazine:I asked my target audience
what price would be appropriate for my music magazine.
From the results we can see that £1.00 - £1.50 was the most popular. I think this is because the target audience age 15-21 does not have lots of spare money to be spending on magazines so if we keep the cost down they are more likely to buy it.
up to £1£1.00- £1.50£1.50 - £2.00£2.00 +
Free Gift:I asked people whether
they would like a free gift when they bought their music magazine.
From the results we can see that everyone I asked said yes. I think this is because everyone loves getting something free and it would make them pick my magazine over others.
YesNo
If yes what:I asked them what they would
like as a free gift with their magazine.
I gave them the options of: CD’s, Posters, Tickets and a chance to say something different.
From the results we can see that tickets proved the most popular but we know that we can’t give away free tickets every week so we would have to come up with smaller gifts that we could give away and maybe one every two months give away tickets depending on sales.

Win Exclusive Items:I asked my target
audience whether or not they would want the chance to win exclusive items such as tickets and iPods.
From the results we can see that everyone I asked wanted to have the chance to win these items.
I thought of having competitions in the form of crosswords and raffles.
YesNo
Listen to music:I asked my target
audience how they listened to music to see how music fitted in with their lives.
From the results we can see that most people own an iPod or another form or an MP3 Player.
Also one person said that they listened to music on YouTube.

Music Genres:I asked people what music
genres they liked so I knew the styles of music I should cover in my magazine.
From the results you can see that Pop and R&B came out as the top 2 most popular music genres.
People also gave other genres that weren’t included in the list and they were:
- heavy metal - rap
RockIndieDrum and BassPopR&BClassicalJazzFolkDanceOther
Music Sales:I asked people where they
bought their music from so I could include places where they can buy their music for a cheaper price than normal
This also links with the fact that people voted ‘Download Illegally’ quite a lot which shows that they don’t want to pay for their music.
The results show that a lot of people have an iTunes account so we could include ‘This Weeks Best Buy on iTunes’ every week so people can buy it if they want if we have reviewed it first

Other Comments:I left a couple of lines at the bottom of the
questionnaire for people to comment about how else I could make the magazine more appealing to them to make it stand out from the rest.
I got comments like: - bright colours - easy to read - involve the reader (surveys and reviews)
