Image AnalysisThe camerawork used at the beginning of the trailer is a wide shot. This shot is effective as it helps to introduce the character & the setting. The shot uses the rule of thirds, this makes the audience bring their attention to the character, but also acknowledge their surroundings. This is effective as it helps show the genre of this trailer: horror. This is because they can see the character within a dark setting which is conventional to this genre. By using deep focus, it enables the audience to see the depth of the setting. This would help represent the darkness that will be inflicted on the character & the danger which is coming.

Low key lighting is an essential feature within the beginning of the trailer as it firstly illustrates the genre of the film & sets the atmosphere for the trailer. This is effective as it will hook the viewer to the trailer which is what is expected of this genre. The use of 1 light in the depth of the shot is effective as you are able to see the character in the dark & lonely setting. This is effective as the audience will be sympathetic towards the character as they are alone. This wide shot is important as it first establishes the characters location. The use of the mise-en-scene such as the lake & forest is conventional to this type of genre. This is because the horror is always unexpected. The shot is effective as it enables the audience to become aware of the circumstances of the main character: being disabled. This means that the audience will therefore sympathise with this character as they know she needs help with certain things & something bad will happen to her.

The composition of the shot is important as you are able to see all of their surroundings. However, the characters are situated in the middle & are small compared to their surroundings. This image portrays the genre effectively as they are shown to be in danger & we therefore sympathise with the characters.

Page 2: Analysis 2

The camerawork used here is conventional as it uses a point of view shot. This helps show the character looking down at the television. This type of shot is conventional as we can see the character is her own surroundings & we can therefore sympathise with her as she is reminiscing on her past.

The type of mise-en-scene is conventional as for a video from the past which the character finds & looks back on. This type of mise-en-scene is expected in a horror trailer as it is normally the origin of the problems that they face in the film. The use of the black tape helps demonstrate that the film she is watching is old & has some horror behind it.In this shot the use of the mid-shot allows the audience to become aware she is lying in bed. This would immediately alarm the audience that something bad was going to occur as she is in her most vulnerable state, as being disabled. But, also that the horror returns at night to haunt the characters. The use of this shot also helps focus on the character & their facial expressions. This is conventional as you can clearly see that she is scared/ frightened which is expected from a horror trailer. This shot is effective as the audience will be able to sympathise with the character, but also make the scene tenser as we cannot see what the character is looking at.

The use of the low key lighting within the scene helps carry the horror throughout the trailer. The colour black helps connote danger & fear. This will therefore highlight the genre & heighten the terror from the audience as of something coming from the darkness.A crane shot/high angle shot used here is conventional as it shows the characters to be weak and vulnerable. This is because the camera is looking down on them & shows them to be small in their surroundings. This type of shot is conventional as it helps create the horror for the trailer as the characters are out of their depth & are in danger.

The mise-en-scene in this shot is conventional as for the lamp. This shows that the characters have gone searching for something in the darkness. But, it also helps show the characters clearly in the scene.

More low key lighting has been used here to carry the horror through the trailer & heighten the danger that the two characters are in. However, the lightening does show some connection between the characters as they are alone in the darkness. This is conventional in a horror trailer as the main character is expected to have someone there to protect them & keep them away from the danger.

Page 3: Analysis 2

The use of the mid shot within this shot helps show the main character to be relaxing in the bath. However, the composition shows someone to be sat in front of her. This type of shot is conventional as the audience are aware of what is around the characters; however, the character is not which makes this shot tense.

The position of this shot shows the other character to be a dark figure & not a visual person. This would add to the horror within the scene & would grip the audience to the trailer. You are also able to see a shadow on the woman’s face. This creates an impact on the audience as they know that they are there to get her.

By using this wide shot at the end is conventional as it shows the woman to be alone in the empty room & still laying in the bath unaware of the presence of the figure. The shot shows the door to be closing on her. This is effective as the audience will be able to sympathise with the woman, however, feel more terror & grip them to the end of the trailer. This would therefore encourage them to then watch the film due to the dramatic ending.

The use of the low key lighting within this shot is effective as it helps the trailer reach its climax. This is because the dark demonstrates danger & the woman is in danger. The lighting gets darker & darker showing the ending of the trailer and of the horror. Which is again conventional as the story ends on a cliff hanger.
