analysing 2 minute opening sequence - pretty little liars

2 minute opening sequence Chosen film: Pretty Little Liars is an American teen drama mystery-thriller television series loosely based on the popular series of novels written by Sara Shepard. Location/setting: The two minutes that I watched, the setting was a high school. This gives the audience a sense that everything is neutral and normal because a high school is not known to be a dangerous where people can be attacked. However, in Pretty Little Liars, you see then getting attacked and hurt. The setting of the high school makes this TV drama more realistic and interesting. Lighting: There is a difference in lighting when they were sitting in the barn at night to many years later. The lighting in the barn was dark and bloomy as they only used candles this is a spooky effect and that maybe something bad is going to happen – Alison disappearing. The lighting on the normal days (after 1 year) is bright to show how all the girls have moved on and that death is not around them no more. There are many flashbacks like when Aria remembers Alison when they were ignoring Mona and holding hands to run away from her; and when Aria sees her new English teacher she goes into a flashback to remembering when she made out with him the lighting is at a yellow and faded effect, this makes the audience know it is a happy memory of her and Alison friendship but also a shocking and awkward memory to realise its guy she made out with. When all the girls are arguing and discussing about ‘A’ the lighting is bright this could suggest that they are against the dark and badness of ‘A’ as they are trying to find out who A is and how to put a stop to A. 2 minute opening sequence

Chosen film: Pretty Little Liars is an American teen drama mystery-thriller television series loosely based on the popular series of novels written by Sara Shepard.

Location/setting:The two minutes that I watched, the setting was a high school. This gives the audience a sense that everything is neutral and normal because a high school is not known to be a dangerous where people can be attacked. However, in Pretty Little Liars, you see then getting attacked and hurt. The setting of the high school makes this TV drama more realistic and interesting.

Lighting:There is a difference in lighting when they were sitting in the barn at night to many years later.

Props:The prop used is the camera that is for filming the actual footage. This camera is used to help the audience feel like they are a part of the scene and feel like reality.

Shots:Shots used were POV, Close up, Medium shot and Aerial shot.

POV: This stands for Point Of View, which is used every time the characters look at their phone to see the messages from A. This make the audience feel as if they have been given the text and that they are a part of what is going on. For Example: when A sends a message that makes the girl think, the audience will feel worried and will make them think what the character should do.

Close up: The close up is a shot of the face. This is used when Aria looks at her phone when A texts her about the English teacher being the person she made out with. This shot showed her shock and confusedness. This makes the audience see the character up close and lets them relate to them as well.

Medium shot: This is used when the camera is on Emily when she realises they have found Alison’s body. This shot shows her facial expression and body language.

Aerial shot: This was used at the end when all the girls came out of the funeral and they got a text from A. After they read the text together there is an aerial shot to show the whole area.
