Cincinnati Public Schools opened its second new high school building and its eighth new elementary building in January 2007, adding two more exciting, modern learning centers that welcome students and the community.

Shroder High School’s new building sits impressively on a grassy campus on Duck Creek Road in Madisonville, tucked among corporate offi ces near Interstate 71. The new home of the Ethel M. Taylor Academy in Millvale, at the corner of Beekman and Fricke streets, stands out among neighborhood houses on a site three blocks from its former building (then called Millvale School).

Both are eye-catching examples of 21st-century schoolhouses, with technology-ready classrooms, energy-effi cient systems, abundant natural light and welcoming common areas designed for student and community use.

These distinctive new buildings are part of CPS’ $1-billion Facilities Master Plan, designed to replace or fully renovate the district’s

deteriorating, outdated buildings by about 2011. The fi rst new building — the new home of Rockdale Academy in Avondale — opened in January 2005 and led a surge of new buildings opening to students since then.

The result are schools with benefi ts for students that weren’t found in many of the older buildings, such as large classrooms, full-service gymnasiums, rooms designed for art and music instruction, computer labs and quality outdoor recreation areas.

“This building sends the message as soon as someone walks in that education is important here and taken seriously,” said Robert Longworth, Taylor’s principal.

Shroder’s new building has “opened up so many new options for the Shroder community,” said Principal Yenetta Harper.

“We love everything about our new building. We are enjoying all the latest technology, with our teachers making use of it to enhance instruction,” she said.

Ethel M. Taylor Academy: Gaining a new building and a new name, the former Millvale School opened January 3 inside an $11.2-million, 66,301-square-foot building for preschool to eighth grade.

1.Taylor Academy’s main entrance welcomes students and the community to a building that serves as a neighborhood landmark and anchor.

3. Three separate

play areas for different age groups

offer students

secure places for

outdoor recreation;

the old building

had no play-grounds.

2. Cubbyholes to hold students’ belong-ings line classroom walls.

4. Classrooms feature televisions linked to classroom computers and white marking boards instead of chalkboards. Classrooms are grouped around extended-learning areas offering teachers space for such things as team teaching and tutoring.

5. Principal Robert Longworth stands in Taylor Academy’s sunlight-filled stairwell.

Shroder High School: Now on an 8.8-acre campus in Madisonville, the new Shroder welcomed students on January 3 into a $15.6-million, 102,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art building.

1. Shroder High School’s peaked roofs, canopied entrance and brick towers lend the building a collegiate look.

7. Taylor’s front office is a welcoming, functional space.

6. Classrooms are technology-ready to support computers for students’ use.

8 . A performance stage fills one end of Taylor’s “cafetorium,” a combination cafeteria and auditorium.

2. Principal Yenetta Harper welcomes Shroder’s students on the first day in the new building.

3. Shroder’s lunchroom, with a stage at one end, does double duty as a performing-arts arena.

4. A view inside the 35-foot-tall, octagon-shaped tower that forms Shroder’s central lobby.

5. Comfortable chairs and walls of books create an inviting library atmosphere for Shroder’s students.

7. Shroder’s gymnasium is a point of pride for students, providing much-desired space for extracurricular activities.

8. Science lessons are hands-on in Shroder’s several classroom labs.

6. Recessed lighting brightens Shroder’s hallways.
