Todevelop,forandinpartnershipwiththeWalloonRegionauthorities,agriculturalmonitoringtools applicable to production aswell as to environmental protection (agri-environmentalmeasures).
Severalapplicationsweredevelopedthankstothecombinedexpertiseofthevariousteams,optimisingatbestthespatialinformationsuppliedbythethreeparticularlypertinentinfor-mationsources:- The IntegratedAdministrationandControl System (IACS) that hasbeenoperational in acartographicversionsince1997attheDirectorate-GeneralforAgriculture.Thissystempro-videsannualyupdatedinformationontheshape,locationandlandoccupationofalmostallagriculturalparcelsintheWalloonRegion.-Theyieldforecastingtool(B-CGMS)developedonthebasisoftheEuropeanyieldforecastingsystemthatusesspatialagrimeteorologicalobservations(meteorological,pedological,phe-nologicaldata).Thisprovidesaseriesofbiophysicalvariablesthatcanbeusefulinmonitoringthestateofagriculture(biomass,grainyields,leafareaindex,waterstress,etc.).-Remotesensing.Theagriculturalparcelwaschosenasthereferencespatialunitforthedevelopmentofthevariousapplications.
Theprojectproducedaseriesofindicatorsofdirectusetotheauthoritiesforthepurposesofcontrol,supportandoverallmonitoring,including:- Theoptimallocalizationofgrassyheadlandsalongsidecropparcels.- Yieldforecasting.- Farmcropdiversity(croprotation).- Assessmentofcropsuccessionquality.- Areaofarablelandleftfallowinwinter.- Riskoferosion.- Monitoringofcropparcelsize.- Waterstressmonitoring.- Monitoringofgrassyheadlandsalongsidecropparcels.- Monitoringofplantcoverofagriculturalplotsinwinter.- Monitoringofnitrogenousfertilizationofmaize.- Identificationofelementsoftheagri-ecologicalnetwork.- Optimallocalizationofextensivefieldbordersonpermanentpastures.- Monitoringofextensivefieldbordersonpermanentpastures.- Parceldistributiononfarms.
In2006theWalloonRegionbegantheoperationalimplementationofsomeoftheseindica-tors.

The world of agriculture todayAgriculture inWallonia is evolving along the same lines as elsewhere in Europe. Besideproductionactivities,theneedtomanageruralareasandmaintainthequalityoftheenviron-mentisgivingrisetoawholestringofnewactivities.Attheadministrativelevel,itisthere-gionalauthoritiesthathavehadfullresponsibilityfortheseactivitiessince2002,actingastheinterfacebetweenthefarmersandtheconstantlyupdatedEuropeandirectives.Thisinterfaceroleextendsbeyondthecomplexorganisationrequiredtodistributefarmingsubsidiesandincludesmanagementofthevariousagri-environmentalinterests,suchasthepreservationofecosystems,maintenanceoflandscapediversity,conservationofthelocalruralheritageandsustainableagriculture.
Geomatics Geomaticsisextremelyusefulforsuchlarge-scaleplanning.Itservesasanaidindevelopingthetoolsneededforsupervision,monitoringanddecision-making.Drawingontheexpertiseoffourresearchcentres,theSAGRIWATELprojectintegratedremotesensingalongsideotherinformationsystemswiththeaimofdevelopingapplicationsofpracticaluseinthefield.Theseapplicationsgiveaccesstovaluable informationontheagri-environmentalpracticesthatfarmerscanadopt,suchastheoptimallocationoffieldborders,thecropsuccessionandrotation,possibleuseofvegetationcoverinwinter,orthecorrectquantitiesofnitrogenousfertilizertobeusedinmaizefields.Inreturn,thecompilationofthesematerialdatacanalsoservetousefullysupporttheagriculturalworldinabroaderframe.
