V E N I C E T O R O M EAboard the 5-Star Le Lyrial

September 18–27, 2018

Featuring renowned mezzo-soprano SUSAN GRAHAM

Dear Traveler,

We invite you to join fellow Metropolitan Opera Guild members and other like-minded travelers on this splendid voyage that combines the pleasures of cruising the Adriatic, Ionian, and Tyrrhenian Seas with sublime music from one of opera’s most celebrated stars. We are privileged to have the distinguished American mezzo-soprano Susan Graham with us aboard Le Lyrial performing a memorable recital aboard ship. Also performing aboard ship will be talented artists affiliated with the Vienna State Opera, personally selected by the distinguished Director of the Vienna Opera, Dominique Meyer. These singers will offer a recital each evening of our voyage, including arias from French, Italian, and German operas.

While ashore, travelers will explore the charming whitewashed trulli houses of Alberobello; the prehistoric temples and medieval castles of Malta; the ancient ruins at Syracuse, Pompeii, and Herculaneum, and other iconic sites on our specially-crafted excursions. And aboard ship, there will be the opportunity to speak with the performing artists over meals and in casual settings, offering opportunities to get to know them as people as well as performers.

Your venue for this musical odyssey at sea is the deluxe Le Lyrial, a state-of-the-art small ship with accommodations for no more than 244 guests. Elegant, comfortable, and gracious, Le Lyrial is the perfect setting for our carefully-curated music and sightseeing programs, and ensures you’ll have a truly unparalleled travel experience.

If you wish to explore one of Europe’s most beautiful and historical regions in a style that is beyond the ordinary while enjoying extraordinary music, we hope you will join fellow opera lovers aboard Le Lyrial for this unforgettable voyage.

Sincerely,

Richard J. Miller, Jr. President, The Metropolitan Opera Guild

Special Perfoming Artist Susan GrahamSUSAN GRAHAM rose to the highest echelon of international performers within just a few years of her professional debut. Her operatic roles span four centuries, from Monteverdi’s Poppea to Sister Helen Prejean in Jake Heggie’s Dead Man Walking, which was written especially for her. This distinctly American artist has also been recognized throughout her career as one of the foremost exponents

of French vocal music. Besides performing frequently at the Metropolitan Opera for over 25 years, she is a favorite at Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Francisco Opera, Covent Garden, Paris Opera, La Scala, Vienna State Opera and the Salzburg Festival. Among the mezzo’s many honors are Musical America’s Vocalist of the Year, a Grammy Award and an Opera News Award. Gramophone magazine has dubbed her “America’s favorite mezzo.”

HostThe son of a diplomat, DOMINIQUE MEYER was born in Alsace, France, in 1955 and spent his childhood in France and Germany. In September 2010 he became Director of the Vienna State Opera. Over the course of his extensive career, he has held many posts in various cultural institutions, including general director of the Paris Opéra (Palais Garnier and Opéra Bastille) from 1989-1990; general director

of the Lausanne Opera from 1994-1999; and general and artistic director of the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris from 1999-2010. He was also president of the French Youth Orchestra, a member of the board of directors of the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra, and artistic consultant to Riccardo Muti during the founding of the Orchestra Giovanile Luigi Cherubini in Piacenza. He is currently on the board of directors of the European Music Theatre Academy of the University of Vienna as well as of the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris.
