@holrmagazine

1) Why launch a media company in 2014, especially a print magazine, when the market was dominated by major publication companies, and with digital taking over?

Part intuition, strategy and luck. After years of working in the magazine and newspaper industry, I had firsthand experience of how digital was transforming all media.

My intuition was publishers invested too much, too quickly transitioning into a digital, and struggled to find a place for print, resulting in them losing audiences while damaging their brand. They failed to see digital doesn’t replace print, but complements it like never before by enabling them to deepen customer experiences, and reach new audiences.

At that time, I felt Canada had creatively, culturally and politically achieved unprecedented levels of international success and respect. We are a diverse, smart and caring nation that embodies the freedoms of self-expression. Strategically, I thought why not a Canadian media brand produced by our talented millennial pool creating content with our unique perspective for millennials everywhere. Canada’s Vice Magazine was an innovator of this in the 1990s and by 2014, it received $300 million from partnerships with A&E and Disney.

I was lucky from a timing perspective as research shows in 2015 the magazine industry started to experience an upswing, while exciting new opportunities arose from social media and

sponsored content. This is an incredible time to launch a media company because three years later there are so many examples of success, yet no company has it all figured out. HOLR Magazine has the advantage of learning from the best while being innovative to redefine the media model.

2) Tell us about this research, and how it had an impact in shaping your strategy?

Media is always evolving due to things like consumer tastes and demographics, or technology like cable, Internet and mobile. Radio formats change, TV shows are cancelled, and magazines fold – but none of the mediums are obsolete. Business models also evolve. Radio and TV leverage digital, and digital leverage video and podcasts. Radio, TV, print or digital are no longer at the hub of the wheel, but rather, each is a spoke. Today it’s a media industry with consumers at the hub of the wheel.

I believe there is a worldwide audience of millennials ready to connect with a new trustworthy brand that entertains, educates and empowers them to live happier, healthier and balanced lives. Our print magazine will be one of our biggest success factors. I mean Canada’s Marshall McLuhan, one of the pioneering media theorists coined the infamous phrase “The medium is the message” back in 1964 and it rings true today. Consumers are affected not only by the content delivered, but the medium itself.

There’s nothing like reading a quality magazine especially for fashion. I believe more people are discovering or rediscovering the enjoyment of the

physical connection and personal experience only magazines provide. Research shows that advertisers recognize this and rank it as one of the highest returns on their ad spend.

The industry is doing things with content and marketing digital-only media can’t. Can you believe that Facebook, Airbnb and Uber are launching print magazines?

3) Tell us more about the Canadian talent pool you mentioned and it’s role.

Over the last 20 years, Canadian colleges and universities have done a remarkable job in creating programs that reflect the changing dynamics in the workforce. They prepare thousands of students each year with the tools they need to pursue careers in design, writing, photography, fashion and marketing -- everything required to build media brands.

I’m amazed at how advanced, eager and fearless students are these days. Much of our talent base in Canada is comprised of alumni from these programs and so is our HOLR Magazine team of which about 80% of them are under 30 years of age.

I believe this generation is, and will continue to, redefine the world for the better, and many of them will be Canadians. As a Canadian media brand built and grown by millennials to inspire millennials, I envision HOLR Magazine playing a major role for this generation.

4) What has it been like since launching and what are the plans to make HOLR Magazine successful moving forward?

We’ve taken a ‘walk before we run approach’ with the first seven issues. With Issue 8, we elevated our design, content and collaborations, earning a level of respect that has opened up many opportunities. We’ve invested in creating a dynamic experience across our print, website and social media. We’ve come a long way and with Issue 9, we’re ready to run!

Whether it’s CNN, The New York Times, Vice, Vogue, Buzzfeed or the million other media companies, we are all competing to connect with people who will trust our brand, and want to spend time engaging with our content. We don’t have huge marketing budgets to reach massive audiences and so we have to be innovative and integrated.

We’re working with people that believe in us and care about building our brand and HOLR community. Social media plays a key role. Offline we are increasing our presence through efforts like the HOLR Partnership Program, which offers co-branded distribution at colleges, universities, fashion shows, events, salons, coffee shops and more.

We need to deepen relationships with all our contributors from staff to editorial to brands by developing amazing content that they want to share knowing that getting the word out will inspire millennials around the world.
