THE LINGUIST – A LANGUAGE EXTRAVAGANZA

O n Friday 19 December2014, I took part in the English Extempore. It was a great

experience and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It taught me a skill that I will cherish all my

life,‟ thinking on my feet”. I won the 3RD PLACE and I will bag the FIRST PRIZE next

time.

O n Friday the 19th of December, our team went to participate in the

list of competitions. This experience was brilliant as I performed

my favourite act from Shakespeare‟s “Macbeth”. I dramatized the

dagger scene as it remains till date to be a well admired soliloquy! I

was given a few tips from the judge while she congratulated me for

having bagged the First Prize in “Mono acting from Shakespeare”.

Last Friday, 19th December, a few of students went to the host

school, Universal School in Ghatkopar. My classmate Khushi Dutt

and I went for a competition called "What's the Good Word" and it

basically tested our vocabulary. Over and above participating, we

left the school with more knowledge and a greater vocabulary! It was

a very exciting experience!

The first 20 minutes of our waiting time in the designated room were nerve-racking.

However, once we met the completion conductor, we were relieved, as she ensured

that this was just a collaborative learning experience; that our aim should be to learn

as much as possible and not just win. With this in our hearts, we participated in the

"What's the Good Word" event. It is astonishing how we never pay attention to

certain words and things which actually can make a lot of difference. We learnt,

rather acknowledged so many new words and phrases that we would never really use

in our speaking, though they are readily available to us and with this learning, I have

sworn to myself that I will invest my time to enrich my vocabulary!

GRADE 10

On Friday, the 19th of December, a few students from Grades 6-10 took part in

‘The Linguist – A Language Extravaganza’ at The Universal School. We

reached the school by 9:00 a.m., where we were greeted by our teacher escort

Ms. Meera Rangarajan. After registration, we headed to our assigned

classrooms eagerly awaiting our events to take place. My event – ‘Designing a

cover for a story book’ was quite different from the other inter school

competitions that I have taken part in, as there were almost no guidelines or

restrictions with regards to what we had to design! They had given us free

creative reign over our ideas! Of course, they did give us a few topics that we

had to draw inspiration. These covered a broad range of options: mythology, fantasy & fairy tales, horror

and comic book. I gravitated towards horror as I felt it was challenging, yet it was the most attention

grabbing choice on offer. My design consisted of a pair of striking eyes in the centre of the page, which was

otherwise covered in black. I wanted these eyes to exude fear, desperation and panic. At the end of the two-

hour allotted time slot, I was very happy with what I had been able to achieve. Unfortunately, my

competition was fierce and their works of art were masterpieces. As the events culminated, we headed

upstairs to the open auditorium, wherein the winter breeze amplified our nervous energy. I did not win any

prize for my efforts - nevertheless this was a really fruitful experience! I hope to participate in such

competitions in the future! NEERAJA CHEMBURKAR

GRADE 10

I enjoyed a lot going to the universal SCHOOL and attending a wonderful

competition because I was selected for English poetry recitation. I not only learnt how to

recite poems better but built a lot of confidence level. I hope to participate in such

competitions next year too!!

I thoroughly enjoyed going to the UNIVERSAL SCHOOL for the FRENCH POETRY

RECITATION. When I heard other participants recite their poems, I was quite amazed

seeing how they expressed in different ways. We had lot of fun within our RBK group. I

learnt a lot through this experience. I hope to participate in competitions like this!

GRADE 6

I enjoyed taking part in the Hindi recitation competition! The there were many

participants from different schools. They all gave extraordinary performances! This

was my very first and unique experience of representing school from my side. I ensure

next time I will win!
