ALUMNI STUDENT – CRYSTAL MAO

My name is Crystal, I am from China. I studied in MGS

for nearly one and a half year. Everything in MGS was

just amazing; we had house singing, international

BBQ, year 13 camp and so on. We could never have

these kinds of experiences in China anyway. MGS

knows how to protect and teach students well,

especially for the international students. We always

got help from the International College, teachers

would like to use all of their time to help us to know

more about local cultures or make some Kiwi friends.

The study life in MGS was free and exciting. We could

choose whatever we like to learn, and teachers

taught us more about Jesus. Sometimes I think Jesus

is not just representing a religion, it also teaches us to

love others and give our best help to others to make

the world better. The best thing I learned in MGS was

dream. MGS taught me whatever we want to do, just

go for it. Thank you for all the things MGS gave me. I

will always love your guys.

OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE

Opportunities for service are abundant at Middleton Grange School with greater responsibility available as pupils progress through the year levels. There are opportunities to be class captains, library monitors, sports helpers, house captains, buddies to new pupils, tutors for younger pupils, peer support leaders, organisers for mission fundraisers – the list is extensive!

SERVANT LEADERSHIP

At Middleton Grange School we believe in ‘servant leadership’ which means that, first and foremost, we lead others with a selfless heart. Examples are prefects, house captains, vertical group representatives, magazine journalists and international ambassadors.

COMMUNITY SERVING THE SCHOOL

Middleton Grange School’s International College has been serving international students since 1964. From the beginning homestays have been part of the plan with thousands of students placed in primarily Christian homes.

Hosting students is about inviting someone into your family, loving and caring for them and helping them to become people of strength and character. The school community has served in this capacity and continues to do so.

SERVING THE WORLD

Middleton Grange School – International College host pupils from sister schools in numerous countries on an annual basis for study tours. Pupils will experience specially designed classes, opportunity to accompany buddies to their classes and other fun activities at school. They will also experience living in a homestay and numerous activities outside of school for example horse riding, visiting a wildlife park or the International Antarctic Centre.

SERVING OUR COMMUNITY

In our Middle School, teacher and pupils decide on a community focus at the beginning of each year and plan a series of service opportunities based on this focus.

In Year 12, pupils are expected to give one hour per week towards Community Service. This can involve a wide range of activities.

To serve globally, Scripture classes raise funds throughout the year for the KIVA loans scheme, an organisation that works across five continents to provide loans to people without access to traditional banking systems.

Destinations for overseas short term mission trips in recent years have included Argentina, Fiji and India.

World Vision is a large focus for service throughout the year with many fundraisers and the Forty Hour Famine being part of this. Middleton Grange School supports numerous children in various countries.

Middleton Grange School’s International College

is such a special place for me. It is where I made my

first kiwi friends, where I learnt kiwi culture, where

I really found what I want to do in the future and

where I made special relationships and memories

with staff and friends . The memories I made at

Middleton Grange are definitely worth leaving Japan

for. I really appreciated all the support especially from

the International College Staff, there was always

someone to talk to. I have completed Bachelor of

Commerce majoring in Hotel Management at Lincoln

University and have worked in number of reputable

hotels in Christchurch and Wellington in different

roles. I am currently working in the Sales Department

at James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor.

EDUCATIONAL PATHWAYS

I am a 31 year old man living in Johannesburg, South

Africa. I am working for LG Electronics am originally

from South Korea. My job at LG Electronics South

Africa is demand planning and assisting product

management for mobile communications.

I entered Middleton Grange High school in 2002.

During the last two years of my high school, I had a

great privilege to meet up with Christ and it changed

my life. I had the best teachers who started with

prayer every first class in the morning, taught scripture

every Thursdays and spoke about Gospel in the

assembly time. The schooling at Middleton was God’s

great plan for my life. So after my high school life I

entered the University of Canterbury and majored in

Economics. With great memory of the schooling life

in Christchurch for about 7 years, I had to go back to

South Korea for the army service. During the service I

had the awesome opportunity to be dispatched as a

member of United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon

for 7 months also for the position of secretary of the

commander of the Republic of Korea battalion in

Tyre. Army service grew me a lot in terms of level of

tolerance and patience. God walked with me at every

step I moved forward. My dream is to help young and

weary see the hope that I have received.
