At the end of the First World War he joined the Indian Army and was posted to the 2nd/10th Gurkhas with whom he served on the North-West Frontier. He went on to serve in Chaman, Quetta, Bombay, Delhi, Persia, Iraq. He was posted to 4 Corps at Imphal in Burma where he was seriously wounded. He was twice mentioned in dispatches and appointed CBE for his work in Burma. He was invalided out of the Army in 1947.
