You will need a guided notes worksheet today.

When you are seated and quiet, I will select a student volunteer to help

distribute the paper.

This paper must be turned into the bin when you leave class today.

一 Bell Ringer

Rights vs. Responsibilities

二 CAN I?

DURING TODAY’S CLASS, WE WILL DISTINGUISH BETWEEN AN

OBLIGATION AND A RESPONSIBILITY.

WE WILL ALSO MAKE OUR OWN COUNTRIES BASED ON THE

RIGHTS WE FIND MOST IMPORTANT.

Please take notes by filling in the blanks on your guided worksheet.

RIGHTSDefinition:

Things that you are allowed to do because of nature or because of law

Because of

NATURE? Because of

LAW? What are you

talking about,

man?

Ok, ok… Here we go…

“Because of Nature”A long time ago a man named John Locke

said that every human pursues three things:

life (survival), liberty (freedom),

and property (owning things to help us

survive).

Mr. Locke called these NATURAL RIGHTS.

Ok, ok… Here we go…

“Because of Law”Just as all people have natural

rights, there are also rights that are created by the laws. For example, Congress can pass a law that gives people

new rights!

GOT IT! THANKS!

TYPES OF RIGHTS

Personal Rights

allow people to live how they want as long as it doesn’t get in the way of other people’s

rights.

Political Rights

allow people to participate in the

political process. We need participation to

have democracy.

People put rights into all kinds of categories, but here are the two main groups with some examples.

TYPES OF RIGHTS

Personal Rightso Freedom of Speech

People can say what they think!o Freedom from

DiscriminationPeople must be treated equally!

o Right to own Property

Political Rightso Right to Assemble

People can print the facts they want!

o Right to Equal Protection Under Law

Aren’t there more?

Yes! It’s your turn to sort the rights!

PERSONAL OR POLITICAL?

Freedom of Religion

People can believe what they want! Hint: Would this impact people

participating in the political process OR would it have a bigger impact

on people living their lives the way they want?

DO I HAVE RIGHTS?As a student, you have rights, but your

rights are limited to protect you and your peers.

For example, you can’t say whatever you want in a speech at a school event. Your school can require

you to be respectful and appropriate.

When you are an adult, you have more freedom to do and say what you want.

Does this seem fair to you? Give a thumbs up or down!

Why might it be important for students to have limited rights in school? Give ONE reason it might be

important.

Blaaaah blah blahhh blah…

WHAT DO ALL THESE RIGHTS MEAN FOR ME?

With rights, or freedoms, come…

RESPONSIBILITY!!! There you go again!

Explain yourself!

RESPONSIBILITIES

Definition:

The expectation that you will take care of

certain things or perform duties

Oh! Stuff we’re supposed to do!

TYPES OF RESPONSIBILITY

Personal DutiesThings you have to do!

o Jury Dutyo Pay Taxeso Obey Lawso Register for Selective

Service o Get an Education

Social ResponsibilitiesThings you should do!

o Stay Informedo Tolerate Otherso Protect Public Safetyo Register to Voteo Speak Your Mind

Just like rights, there are different kinds of responsibilities.

We must pay taxes and

should register to vote!

Yes! As a student, your list of responsibilities might look a little

different.

Your list may not include voting, but it probably includes

respecting authority.

I’m a student… Do I have

responsibilities??

YES!Is voting a right? Is voting also a responsibility?

Do they ever overlap?

YES!What if you yelled “FIRE!”

in a crowded movie theater? What

RIGHT might be involved?

What RESPONSIBILITY

might be involved?

Do they ever conflict?

In the crowded movie theater scenario, which is more

important:

The right? Or the responsibility? The responsibility. Even though you have a right to

free speech, you have the responsibility to protect the

public safety. It would be seriously unsafe to yell “FIRE!” in

a crowded movie theater…

LET’S RECAP… THUMBS UP OR DOWN?

As we click through each slide, give a thumbs up if a statement is true or a

thumbs down if a statement is false.

LET’S RECAP… THUMBS UP OR DOWN?

Rights are things that you are allowed to do because of science or because you

want to.

LET’S RECAP… THUMBS UP OR DOWN?

John Locke describes natural rights as the pursuit of life, liberty,

and property.

LET’S RECAP… THUMBS UP OR DOWN?

The Constitution lays out rights for citizens of the United States in the Bill

of Rights.

LET’S RECAP… THUMBS UP OR DOWN?

There are two main categories of rights: Personal Rights and

Private Rights.

LET’S RECAP… THUMBS UP OR DOWN?

Students and adults have the same rights.

LET’S RECAP… THUMBS UP OR DOWN?

While we have many rights, that also means

that we have many responsibilities.

LET’S RECAP… THUMBS UP OR DOWN?

There are two main categories of

responsibilities: Personal Duties and Private Rights.

LET’S RECAP… THUMBS UP OR DOWN?

Rights and responsibilities

sometimes overlap and sometimes

conflict.

Great Job!

Thanks for helping us

understand our

RIGHTS and

RESPONSIBILITIES!

三 CAN I CREATE A COUNTRY?

三 CAN I CREA

TE A COUNTRY

?

Using your pencil, sketch a quick flag on in the flag box of your paper. We

will use the back to make a bigger, more detailed flag.

Next, write a motto for your country. A motto is a short phrase that sums

up your ideals and beliefs.

For example, the motto of the USA is since 1956 is IN GOD WE TRUST. It is also the motto of the state of Florida

and the country of Nicaragua.

Texas’s motto is FRIENDSHIP. Wyoming’s motto is EQUAL RIGHTS.

In the box, there are five rights listed and five responsibilities listed. Sort the rights from responsibilities and write them into the scrolls at the bottom of the page.

When you get to the last line on the rights scroll, you need to make your own right up.

When you get to the last line on the responsibilities scroll, you need to make up your own responsibility.

三 CAN I CREA

TE A COUNTRY

?

Finally, use the crayons and colored pencils from the front table to create a flag for your country on the back of your worksheet.

Whatever you do not have completed will be home prep due on the next school day.
