wTvp Books for kidsWTVP has once again been chosen as the recipient for the Barnes & Noble Holiday Book Drive and we need your help!
The “drive” runs thru December 31 at the PEORIA Barnes & Noble store in Glen Hollow Shopping Center. To participate, simply buy a child’s book while shopping at the store and donate it back to the book drive. Pick out your favorite book, or choose something from the Book Drive display or the baskets of suggested books at the registers. Our target age is birth-8 years old, but we reach all ages with our partnerships with agencies such as Taft Homes and Boys & Girls Club. Paperback books are ideal.
WTVP collects the books on a weekly basis and then distributes them to kids throughout the com-munity—many who have no books of their own. We work with a variety of schools and agencies through story times and family events where children can come and pick out a free book to keep. Groups we work with include Children’s Home, Common Place, Crittenton Center, Friendship House, Neighborhood House, Taft Homes, Valeska Hinton and many inner city schools.
Thank you for your generous help!

As noted in previous articles, I am driving back and forth between Peoria and Urbana these days to manage the public radio and television stations in both markets. A personal benefit that accrues to me on these daily treks is a front row seat to the marvelous setting that is Central Illinois.I have had the privilege of traveling to many of the geographic wonders of the United States, from ocean front to mountain to desert, but the Illinois prairie is an exception-ally wonderful place that we mostly take for granted. I encourage you to rouse yourself before sun-up some clear, crisp morning and drive east on I-74 to witness a most beautiful sunrise over mist-covered fields. In the evening, drive west into the sunset and watch the moon and stars fill the sky where there is no light pollution, and then as you round the curve in East Peoria, marvel at the site of Peoria rising from the prairie. I guarantee these are views that you will never tire of, and that will remind you what an exceptional place this is.
You may be wondering what to do to fill the time between the prairie sun rise and sunset. Let me guide you to www.wtvp.org where you can click on the illinois adventure icon. This will take you to a fact-filled website listing historic places, museums, parks, hot spots and fun loca-tions for the entire family. The illinois adventure website includes descriptions, maps, hours and other information for
interesting destinations to make your day in Illinois something out of the ordinarary. And don’t forget to tune in to illinois adventure on Thursdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 4 p.m. on WTVP. If you have family coming over the holidays or if you’ve got time off and are looking for something special to do, let me recom-mend an adventure in Illinois and illinois adventure.
As we mark the end of another calendar year and prepare to celebrate the holidays, one common desire of people of goodwill everywhere is peace. That is our most sincere wish for you at this special time of year: PEACE!

return to Downton abbeyJanuary 5, 014 is a red letter date for millions of PBS viewers: the U.S. premiere of “Downton abbey Season 4” on Masterpiece. We hope you fans have been enjoying the encores of Seasons and as the weeks slowly march by—but now we have another special to help get you in the mood for the big premiere.
return to Downton abbey savors fond memories from the past three seasons and offers a tantalizing taste of Season 4 from the series The New York Times called “an instant classic.” Hosted by Academy Award-winning actress Susan Sarandon — a devoted fan of the series who especially admires the writing of fellow Oscar-winner Julian Fellowes — the program includes a mix of behind-the-scenes footage, interviews with creators and cast members, and video clips of favorite moments. return to Downton abbey premieres Sunday, Dec. 1 at 8 p.m. with a second chance to watch start-ing at 9:0 p.m. See listings for more opportunities.
Structured around three themes, return to Downton abbey explores “The Changing World of Downton Abbey,” “The Women of Downton Abbey,” and “Love and Other Relationships at Downton Abbey.” Cast members interviewed include Michelle Dockery, Hugh Bonn-eville, Joanne Froggatt, Elizabeth McGovern, Jim Carter, Shirley MacLaine, Sophie McShera and Laura Carmichael.

Sherlock Holmes returnsSherlock fans already have their calendars marked for Jan. 19, 014—the premiere date for Series 3 of the smash hit BBC drama starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman airing on Masterpiece Mystery! But you don’t have to wait that long for more on your favorite detective.
How Sherlock changed the world, a two-hour special airing Tuesday, Dec. 17 at 8 p.m., un-covers the truth behind the fiction of the legendary literary creation, Sherlock Holmes. Sherlock was a scientist who used chemistry, fingerprints and bloodstains to catch an offender in an era when eyewitness reports and “smok-ing gun” evidence were needed to convict criminals, and police incompetence meant that Jack the Ripper stalked the streets freely. In many ways, Sherlock Holmes was the grandfather of forensic science and the modern detective can be seen as a direct extension of Conan Doyle’s literary genius.
Through the use of compelling ar-chival material and dramatic recon-struction, the special tells the true stories of the scientists, detectives and even criminals who were in-spired or influenced by the legend of Holmes. The program explores real crimes that were solved thanks to a piece of equipment Holmes used, a technique he popularized or invented, or even his method of reasoning. The special will also show how the scientific techniques Holmes introduced to the world have evolved into the stunning CSI-style forensic labs of Scotland Yard and the FBI.

call the Midwife Holiday SpecialWTVP will unwrap a special treat for viewers this holiday with a new call the Midwife Holiday Special. Premiering Sunday, Dec. 9 at 6:0 p.m., the special will pave the way for a third season of the hit drama call the Midwife which returns this spring.
In 1958 East End London, the holi-days are not just about the opening of presents, but also about the closing of deep wounds. Although the weather is unseasonably mild for this time of year, the lives of the midwives are any-thing but calm. Jenny’s relationship with Alec continues to blossom and Shelagh’s (formerly Sister Bernadette) quiet wedding to Dr. Turner is underway. When a thousand-pound explosive is discovered, the district is evacuated and the Nonnatus House team is quick to take charge to ensure that the community is safe and warm. Always one to keep spirits high, Chummy decides to forge ahead with the Cubs Christmas party. However, just when the community’s holiday spirit is renewed, Poplar faces an outbreak of polio, with the repercus-sions of the illness affecting the nurses and nuns more than they could have ever imagined.
Based on the best-selling memoirs of Jennifer Worth, call the Midwife is a moving and intimate story of mid-wifery in London’s East End in the 1950s. Season 3 takes viewers back to East London, now in 1959 and the eve of the Swinging Sixties. The winds of change are sweeping through the country and the residents of Non-natus House face some momentous changes of their own.

celebrate with wTvpIt truly is the most wonderful time of the year, when artist and artisan, newsman and newsmaker, singer and songwriter celebrate the holiday season with PBS. Check the listings for dates and times and enjoy a little holiday cheer with WTVP!
This year, Tony-winner Alfie Boe and veteran news anchor Tom Brokaw — along with “Hal” Halvorsen, the “candy bomber” who dropped chocolates into post-war Berlin in 1948 — join the Mormon Tabernacle Choir for an inspirational concert at Temple Square. Harking back to WWI, PBS presents Silent night, a poignant opera based on the Christmas Eve truce of 1914, when French, German and Scottish soldiers laid down their arms for one evening of peace.
For family viewing, PBS offers a most unusual stocking-stuffer — a comedy with a nose-clenching twist starring Downton Abbey’s Hugh Bonneville as the eponymous Mr. Stink. For the youngest viewers, PBS KIDS rings in the holiday season with
an encore presentation of last year’s block-buster hit The cat in the Hat knows a lot about christmas!, a special week of holiday-themed programming Dec. 9-13, new holiday episodes and specials from Daniel Tiger’s neighborhood, Sesame Street and wild kratts, as well as classic favorites including curious George: a very Monkey christmas, arthur’s perfect christmas and Shalom Sesame.
Traveling to Norway, the renowned a cappella singers of St. Olaf College fill the apse and nave of Trondheim’s historic Nidaros Cathedral
with the sounds of Christmas. Back in the US, renowned American mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves hosts an evening of traditional carols and classical masterworks sung by the Belmont University choir, while craft in america embraces familiar and new winter celebrations as part of the American experience with the handmade.
As the year winds down, live from lincoln center looks forward to 2014 with the New York Philharmonic’s gala opening concert, featuring cellist Yo-Yo Ma. On New Year’s Day, Great performances continues the cherished tradition of greet-ing the new year with the Vienna Philharmonic at the city’s opulent Musikverein. Beloved stage and screen star Julie Andrews returns as host.
Dear Santa,Ever year good little boys and girls throughout the
land write letters to you asking for the trains, dol-lies, and toys that will bring them joy and happiness throughout the coming year. Now I know I’ve gained a little weight over the last year and my face is as red as your suit, so that may be why the staff at WTVP has
been sending their wish lists to me. Just in case they were meant for you, I am forwarding the list on the chance that
you or some of your generous elves in Central Illinois can help grant their requests.
Todd would like a new wireless microphone system ($1,600) to prevent interference during productions.
Alex would like a new driver’s seat ($2,000) to save his back during those long drives in the satellite truck.
Tracy would like some more light grid extenders ($170 each) to help provide better lighting during studio productions.
Billy would like a new computer ($4,000) for editing video.
Jimmy W. would like to replace the old van with a more reliable one ($31,000) for traveling around the state for Illinois Adventure. Maybe if your sleigh is only used one night per year…!
Jenni would like 2 credit card virtual terminals ($350 each) and web module software ($14,000).
Lulu would like 20 phone operator headsets ($1,000), and art hangers, both for Auction ($1,000).
Barb would like a paper cutter ($250) and a folding machine ($1,200).
Kathy would like some easels of varying heights ($30 to $150 each).
Angie would like new table cloths and skirting ($500), and if you find a van for Jimmy, she’d like one, too.
Mark would like Filemaker Pro upgrade software ($2,400 for 10 users).
Jed would like a new PC for Master Control ($1,000)
Ben would like more digital storage for programs ($1,200 each, and as many as you can provide).
Linda would like more money in any amount to acquire new British comedies, mysteries, and other exciting new programs.
Jackie would like a new program display system in Master Control ($28,000).
Stacey would like more hours in the day for writing and editing, and a lot more new books to share with needy kids throughout Central Illinois.
You should know, Santa that none of these requests are for personal items, but these good little boys and girls only want to improve the technical quality, programming and services for all the WTVP viewers.
And as to whether we all believe in you, let’s just say that we believe there is a little Santa in all of us.
Thanks, Santa. Chet Tomczyk

students and subject matter—science. She has been working with WTVP for the past three years as our ambassador extraordinaire for PBS LearningMedia, helping us firmly establish the service and generate excitement amongst her fellow educators. In the past year alone, she has led numerous teacher workshops, gotten State Superintendent of Education Dr. Chris Koch to endorse the service, and put its inspirations into play herself by bringing three schools together to launch a weather balloon to the edge of the atmosphere—creating a hands-on learning experience for the kids and new programming for WTVP. Now, she can add a new accolade to her resume: WTVP’s Louise Alloy Volunteer of the Year for 2013.
WTVP was pleased to celebrate the contributions of all our dedicated volunteers at our 27th annual Volunteer Recognition Event held Oct. 30 at the WTVP Studio. In addition to Emily, the following people were also honored:
Nelvie Anderson and Frank Thomas received the Bourland Award for their long-stand-ing and influential volunteer contributions.
Sandy Gasparovich and Connie Tomczyk were named to the Volunteer Honor Roll by their peers.
Kim Ascherl, Emily Dawson, Jerry Herbstreith, Lee Maki, Cathy Barry, Bonnie Trow-bridge and Judy Planck received service awards for working 100+ hours this past year.
And Roxy Baker, Jon Cecil, Jan Cecil, Jo Cramer, Connie Eldert, Sandy Gasparovich, Laura Garfinkel, Carol Gray, Yvonne Herbstreith, Beth Maki, Don Mitchell, Linda Mitchell, Mike Perricone, Kitty Robinson, Sheila Schumm, Larry Sprague, Nancy Sprague, Nancy Stach, Karl Stach, Don Stedman, Frank Thomas, Connie Tomczyk, Bev Wehr, Chip Ascherl, Cindy Brucker, Steve Knobeloch, Marcia Lough, and Cindy Wegner received service awards for working between 47 and 99 hours this past year.
