Welcome to the Foyle Film Festival’s action-packed blockbuster of a Spring Programme with special events, talks, an iconic superhero or two, innovative 3D movies, children’s screenings, and some intriguing Hollywood Selfies.

The programme kicks off with an exploration of Innovation in Cinema: 3D Day on Thursday 12 March, with a series of films at Brunswick Moviebowl tracing the history of 3D cinema – including Dial M For Murder, Cave of Forgotten Dreams and Avatar, and a talk from leading film historian Professor Ian Christie. Icons: Batman, from Monday 16 to Saturday 21 March, celebrates the many manifestations of the Dark Knight, with talks and screenings, Christopher Nolan’s Batman Trilogy at Brunswick Moviebowl, comic art, animation and FabLab workshops, and a very special Batman-themed day at the Nerve Centre for children and young people including a Gotham video gaming arcade.

The Foyle Film Festival’s 10th annual Intercultural & Anti-Racism Programme takes place from Monday 23 to Saturday 28 March. As well as an extensive education programme, the schedule includes award-winning, thought-provoking films such as Dreamcatcher and Dear White People, as well as a 75th anniversary screening of Pinocchio.

Also in the last week in March, children will love screenings of Lady and the Tramp, Chicken Little and E.T., as part of the Humdinger! Children’s Story Festival, as well as a chance to see our very own The Crumblegiant animated film by Derry animator John McCloskey.

Long before “selfies” became the rage, Hollywood filmmakers have been taking long looks in the mirror and saying: “Now there’s a good subject for a movie”.

During April and May, we celebrate the Oscars® with the Hollywood Selfies Season, showcasing an eclectic range of great films that extol the wonders, and expose the horrors, of the Dream Factory that spawned them. From Sunset Boulevard to Get Shorty, we present 20 films, screening chronologically, representing some of the entertainment industry’s most amusing, astute and enduring looks inward.

Foyle Film Festival is funded by DCAL through Northern Ireland Screen and by Derry City Council

INNOVATION IN CINEMA: 3D DAY VENUE: BRUNSWICK MOVIEBOWL

Until recently 3D has been part of the lost history of cinema. After a brief period of popularity in the 1950s when Alfred Hitchcock created one of the classics of 3D cinema, the technology was written off as a gimmick. Since the triumph of Avatar, 3D has returned with a vengeance. As well as extending the boundaries of the mainstream cinema experience in blockbusters such as Gravity, 3D is also inspiring arthouse filmmakers such as Wim Wenders and Werner Herzog.

Our celebration of the history of 3D Cinema has been curated by Professor Ian Christie, one of the UK’s leading film historians.

DIAL M FOR MURDER IN STUNNING 3D@ 10AM EDUCATION SCREENING TICKET PRICE: £2

USA.1954. Director(s): Alfred Hitchcock. Cast: Ray Milland, Grace Kelly, Robert Cummings, John Williams, Anthony Dawson. Duration: 1hr.45mins. Cert: PG.

CAVE OF FORGOTTEN DREAMS @ 7.30PMTICKET PRICE: £4.50 France.2011. Director(s): Werner Herzog. Cast: Werner Herzog, Jean Clottes, Julien Money. Duration: 1hr.30mins. Cert: PG.

AVATAR @ 9.30PM TICKET PRICE: £6

USA.2009. Director(s): James Cameron. Cast: Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver. Duration: 2hrs.42mins. Cert: PG-13.

Take a trip back in time to 1954 when Alfred Hitchcock experimented with 3D in his polished adaptation of the stage thriller Dial M For Murder, now restored to its full three-dimensional glory. Seeing it as he intended is like watching the film for the first time. The depth of focus, framing of characters and objects and use of the claustrophobic sets add extra pleasure to what was already a thoroughly enjoyable “perfect crime” nail-biter. Grace Kelly reaches out into the audience for murder scissors; foreground tea tables all but clonk your knees; a tell-tale door key is brandished inches from your nose. Dial M for Murder marked the end of the brief flirtation with 3D movies of the early 1950s. Hitchcock said of 3D: “It’s a nine-day wonder, and I came in on the ninth day”.

Cave of Forgotten Dreams, a breathtaking 3D documentary by German director Werner Herzog, follows an exclusive expedition into the nearly inaccessible Chauvet Cave in France, home to the most ancient visual art known to have been created by man. It’s an unforgettable cinematic experience that provides a unique glimpse of the pristine artwork created by human hands over 30,000 years ago – almost twice as old as any previous discovery.

“A sacred space where the human and the mystical effortlessly intertwine, and we are in Werner Herzog’s debt for that great gift.” Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times

As well as being the most commercially successful director in the world, James Cameron is also one of the technological pioneers in modern cinema history, using new developments to translate his creative ideas onto the big screen. Avatar heralded the digital rebirth of 3D cinema – a kind of cinema promising a total spatial film experience by projecting the viewer into the filmic space. The fall from dizzying heights in the movie’s final battle signalled an unprecedented thrill in cinema, even prompting comparisons with the legendary Lumière brothers’ film Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat (1895). As well as marking the beginning of the three-dimensional age of cinema, Avatar completes the circle with its link back to early cinema.

TAXI DRIVER TICKET PRICE: £2 VENUE: NERVE CENTRE CINEMA

USA.1976. Director: Martin Scorsese. Cast: Robert De Niro, Jodie Foster, Cybill Shepherd. Duration: 1hr.53mins. Cert: 18.

Martin Scorsese’s exploration of the psychologyof the vigilante remains one of the most disturbing films of American cinema. Screenwriter Paul Schrader drew inspiration from Dostoevsky’s Notes from Underground and the diary of Arthur Bremer, the would-be assassin of presidential candidate George Wallace, to create an unnervingportrait of a paranoid Vietnam vet who transformshimself into an avenging angel. It was an attempt, Shrader said, to “exorcise the evil I felt within me”. The bloody climax of the film, resulting in Travis Bickle’s elevation to tabloid hero, offers a chilling insight into the redemptive power of violence.

A week-long celebration of Batman: Dark Knight, Caped Crusader, World’s Greatest Detective. Whatever you know him as, wherever you know him from – the blockbuster movies, TV shows, video games, cartoons, or millions of comics – Batman is proof you don’t need superpowers to be a superhero.

Nerve Centre will host a series of events exploring and celebrating the world of Batman. From film and animation screenings, workshops, competitions, to a full day of Batman-themed activities on Saturday 21 March. The action-packed Saturday will feature screenings of the best Batman movies, animations, comic art and craft workshops and the Gotham Arcade, with a selection of brilliant Batman video games on offer – you’ll not want to miss out!

THE CABINET OF DR CALIGARI WITH INTRODUCTORY TALK ON GERMAN EXPRESSIONIST CINEMA TICKET PRICE: £2 VENUE: NERVE CENTRE CINEMA USA.1920. Director(s): Robert Weine. Cast: Werner Krauss, Conrad Veidt, Friedrich Feher. Duration: 1hr.13mins. Cert: U.

In the aftermath of the First World War, German filmmakers created a nightmare world of the bizarre and the uncanny that continues to have a major influence on art and the cinema today. Echoes of The Cabinet of Dr Caligari can be detected throughout the Batman universe. The fixed grin and clown-like appearance of the central character in The Man Who Laughs (1928) was a key inspiration for the creation of the Joker. The role was

played by Conrad Veidt, the actor who played Cesare, the sleepwalker under the control of the sinister Dr Caligari. Tim Burton brought the dark shadows, twisted perspectives and macabre sensibility of German Expressionist cinema to Gotham City, while Caligari’s disturbing vision of madness and psychosis is mirrored in the haunted corridors of Arkham Asylum.

MEMENTO WITH INTRODUCTORY TALK ON CHRISTOPHER NOLAN’S VIGILANTES TICKET PRICE: £2VENUE: NERVE CENTRE CINEMA

USA.2000. Director: Christopher Nolan. Cast: Guy Pearce, Carrie-Anne Moss, Joe Pantoliano. Duration: 2hrs.6mins. Cert: 15.

This tale of an obsessive loner seeking vengeance after the murder of his wife first brought Christopher Nolan to international attention. In a daring new twist on the noir anti-hero, the main character Leonard Shelby has suffered severe head trauma and can no longer form new memories. The disorientation, confusion and doubt that are Leonard’s permanent state of mind are brilliantly evoked through a narrative of reverse chronology.

“Though many contemporary films jumble time and some reverse chronology, like Pulp Fiction or 2046, none does so with as many scenes as Memento. Its narrative structure forces the spectator to take a new approach to making sense of what happens.” Todd McGowan

BATMAN RETURNS TICKET PRICE: £2 VENUE: NERVE CENTRE CINEMA

USA.1992. Director(s): Tim Burton. Cast: Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito, Michelle Pfeiffer. Duration: 2hrs.6mins. Cert: 15.

In this sequel to his cinematic reboot of Batman, Tim Burton returns to the theme of the outsider he explored in his previous film, the haunting Edward Scissorhands. In fact, the Penguin and Catwoman both come across as distant cousins of the outcast Edward, twin lost souls seeking love and understanding. With their dark costumes and gothic look, all three characters are descendants of the German Expressionist cinema of the 1920s. Burton also draws on the design

aesthetic of this classic period of German cinema to craft a new vision of Gotham City.

“Production designer Bob Welch creates a comic nightmare version of Manhattan where cinematic predecessors such as Fritz Lang’s Metropolis merge with expressionism and borrowings from fascist architecture to form a threatening artificial world.” Jurgan Muller

Widely considered to be one of the greatest trilogies of all time, here is a chance to watch the acclaimed series back to back on the big screen. When Director Christopher Nolan rebooted the struggling Batman franchise back in 2005, with a much darker and more realistic tone, few would have guessed the phenomenal impact it would have on the Dark Knight, as well as reinventing the superhero genre in cinema.

ICONS: BATMAN

The critically acclaimed box office smash and BAFTA-winning movie will return for a special screening. It features a Lego incarnation of Batman that has proved so popular that he is due to star in his own big screen spin-

off. In a film full of invention and great characters, the extra-gravelly voiced, arrogant, sarcastic, too-cool-for-school Batman manages to steal every scene he is in.

THE NECESSITIES OF LIFE (CE QU’IL FAUT POUR VIVRE) VENUE: NERVE CENTRE CINEMATICKET PRICE: £2

Canada.2008. Director: Benoît Pilon. Cast: Natar Ungalaaq, Denis Bernard, Antoine Bertrand, Paul-André Brasseur. Duration: 1hr.42mins. Cert: 15. Language: French & Inuktitut with English subtitles.

The Necessities of Life is an engaging drama about an Inuit hunter and family man diagnosed with tuberculosis, and sent from his Far North home to a sanitarium in early-’50s Quebec. Separated from his wife and daughters and only partially grasping the reasons for his internment, Tiivii struggles to connect with the French-speaking “Whites” who surround him. The film’s exploration of cultural barriers and human connections may be familiar, but Pilon’s documentarian approach elevates a potentially sentimental storyline to something much more affecting.

UK/Germany/Austria/France.2009. Director: Sherry Hormann. Cast: Liya Kebede, Sally Hawkins, Timothy Spall, Juliet Stevenson, Anthony Mackie. Duration: 2hrs. Cert: 18.

Desert Flower has all the trappings of a good fairytale, especially those moments of despair so extreme that a happy ending seems almost impossible. But what makes Sherry Hormann’s film astounding is that it’s real. The autobiography-turned-biopic is based on the life of African nomad, supermodel and activist Waris Dirie. Born in Somalia, Dirie escaped marriage at 13 (she was to become the fourth wife of a 65-year-old man) by walking alone for days through the desert to find a grandmother she had never met. She then moved to London and found work as a cleaning woman at McDonald’s. While mopping the floors, she was discovered by a renowned fashion photographer who turned her into a supermodel. After finding fame, Dirie dropped a bombshell. At the age of three, she had suffered ritual female genital mutilation (FGM), a horrifying practice that meant lifelong pain for her and death for a number of her family members.

FRIDAY 27 MARCH @ 1PM THE GREEN FIELDS OF FRANCE VENUE: TOWER MUSEUM TICKET PRICE: FREEINTRODUCTORY TALK FROM DONAL MCANALLEN ON ‘REDISCOVERING GAA MEMBERS WHO FOUGHT IN THE FIRST WORLD WAR’

The Green Fields of France is a poetic documentary exploring the role of Irish men who fought and died during the First World War. John Banville, Peter Fallon and Frank McGuinness lend their voices to the work of Irish poets Patrick McGill, Francis Ledwidge and Thomas Kettle, all of whom fought during the conflict. It is estimated that over 300,000 Irishmen fought during the First World War although their involvement has long been a sensitive issue. The work of poets such as Ledwidge and Kettle offers a unique insight into the mindset of men from Ireland fighting across the Western Front.

The screening will also include a talk by Donal McAnallen from the GAA’s ‘Forgotten Gaelic Volunteers’ project. He will show how the organisation’s nine month research project is aiming to identify GAA members from Ulster who died during the First World War and uncover the sometimes forgotten volunteers.

Asta stops in a small Western Australian town after her motorcycle breaks down and shacks up with Tim Curtis, the local mechanic, while fixing it. She then becomes involved in helping Curtis’ teenage daughter, Lizzie, who has been recently raped by Danny Fiske, the son of a wealthy, well-known citizen and his gang. USA.1940. Director(s): Norman Ferguson, T. Hee, Ben Sharpsteen, Hamilton Luske. Cast: Dickie Jones, Christian Rub, Mel Blanc. Duration: 1hr.28mins. Cert: U. Distributor: Park Circus.

The most magical of animated films, Pinocchio represents a high point of cinematic invention. Its impact on fantasy is huge – Steven Spielberg quotes the soaring ballad “When You Wish Upon A Star” in his dream project Close Encounters Of The Third Kind, and remade the whole movie with his robot-boy adventure A.I. Artificial Intelligence. The first animated film to win an Academy Award, Pinocchio is a parable for children, and generations have grown up remembering the words “Let your conscience be your guide” and “A lie keeps growing and growing until it’s as plain as the nose on your face”.

Winner of two Oscars ®.

SATURDAY 28 MARCH @ 8PM

I AM SLAVE VENUE: NERVE CENTRE TICKET PRICE: £2

UK.2010. Director: Gabriel Range. Cast: Wunmi Mosaku, Isaach De Bankolé, Lubna Azabal. Duration: 1hr.22mins. Cert: 15.

Based on the true story of Mende Nazer who, at 12 years old, was abducted from her Sudanese village by pro-government Arab militia and sold into slavery in Khartoum. After six years she is sent to London, where her name is changed, but her miserable life of servitude continues. Her passport is taken away and she is told that her father will die if she goes to the authorities. Fortunately she meets a sympathetic person who seems to offer her the hope of escape and reunion with her family back in Sudan. For all the film’s optimism an end title states that there are around 5,000 ‘slave’ workers currently in Britain. A largely hidden injustice that needs increased exposure in order to bring the problem into the open and, hopefully, help to eradicate.

THE CRUMBLEGIANT BY JOHN MCCLOSKEY BOOK LAUNCH AND SCREENING

‘Every day the crows would attack and scrawk. But that was ok because every day the Crumblegiant would appear and swish them all away into the white clouds… Then one day the giant never turned up…’ Follow Emily on her journey through a beautiful landscape of sheep and stars and fantastical imaginings in a gentle, thought-provoking exploration of grief and loss. John McCloskey is an award-winning illustrator and animator. The Crumblegiant began life as an animated film, which was nominated for a BAFTA in 2009, and has now been turned into an amazing limited edition book and iBook by Whittrick Press and Raw Nerve Productions.

The iBook has a unique scrolling narrative and is narrated by well-known actor Bernard Hill, star of Lord of the Rings, Titanic and, most recently, Wolf Hall. The launch will include a screening of the original animation, a Q&A with the author, refreshments, and the opportunity to get hands on with the iBook.

SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN TICKET PRICE: £2 USA.1952. Director(s): Stanley Donen, Gene Kelly. Cast: Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor, Debbie Reynolds, Jean Hagen. Duration: 1hr.43mins. Cert: U.

Made during the McCarthyite witch-hunts of the early ‘50s, MGM’s Singin’ In The Rain plays as a Technicolor love-letter to a studio system on the verge of collapse. One of Hollywood’s greatest musicals, it is set during the transition from silent movies to the talkies, as three actors (Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor and Debbie Reynolds) attempt to save the costume drama ‘The Duelling Cavalier’ by turning it into a musical and redubbing the grating voice of the lead actress (Jean Hagen).

Nominated for two Oscars®.

WEDNESDAY 8 APRIL @ 7PM

SUNSET BOULEVARD 65TH ANNIVERSARY SCREENING TICKET PRICE: £2 USA.1950. Director: Billy Wilder. Cast: Gloria Swanson, William Holden, Erich von Stroheim, Buster Keaton. Duration: 1hr.50mins. Cert: PG.

FREE reception before tonight’s screening. All welcome.

Billy Wilder’s scabrous, cynical attack on Hollywood stars William Holden as a bankrupt screenwriter caught up in the sticky web of sleaze and insanity spun by a faded star (Gloria Swanson) of the silent film. The story, set in ‘50s Hollywood, focuses on Norma Desmond, a silent-screen goddess whose pathetic belief in her own indestructibility has turned her into a demented recluse. The crumbling Sunset Boulevard mansion where she lives with only her butler, Max, who was once her director and husband has become her self-contained world. Norma dreams of a movie comeback and she begins a relationship with Joe Gillis, a small-time writer who becomes her lover, that will culminate with murder and total madness.

Winner of three Oscars®.

During April and May, we celebrate the Oscars® with the Hollywood Selfies Season, showcasing an eclectic range of great films that extol the wonders, and expose the horrors, of the Dream Factory that spawned them. The chosen films represent some of the entertainment industry’s most amusing, astute and enduring looks inward.

STARDUST MEMORIES 35TH ANNIVERSARY SCREENING TICKET PRICE: £2 USA.1980. Director: Woody Allen. Cast: Woody Allen, Charlotte Rampling, Jessica Harper. Duration: 1hr.29mins. Cert: PG.

Woody Allen’s homage to Fellini’s 8½ plays vout much in the same way, as Allen creates yet another skewed version of himself, this time called Sandy Bates. Bates is at a film festival for a retrospective on his career, and throughout the course of the weekend he reflects on his personal life, his past films, and the future of his career.

Stardust Memories skewers with deadly accuracy not only itself and its creator, but also human relationships on all levels and celebrity culture. (Bates’ near murder by an obsessed fan eerily presaged the killing of John Lennon a short while later). The film also has one of the best soundtracks ever - not just in terms of song choices, but also in the actual placement of each song.

“It is a fairly brutal and stylized account of the miseries of a famous comedian/director, who is trying to do something different, but his grabby fans and uncomprehending studio bosses won’t let him.” Rob Gonsalves, eFilmCritic

THE BIG PICTURE TICKET PRICE: £2 USA.1989. Director: Christopher Guest. Cast: Kevin Bacon, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Martin Short, Emily Longstreth. Duration: 1hr.40mins. Cert: PG-13.

Nick Chapman graduates from film school and his short film wins a special prize. This gives him a high enough profile that he can get Hollywood to back the film he has long dreamed of making. Studio exec Allen Habel is interested, but Nick soon is seduced by Hollywood and makes one concession after another until his original movie is lost altogether. Worse, Nick is lost, too, turning on girlfriend Susan and old buddy Emmet. Will he come to his senses before everything is lost?

“The strength of The Big Picture is its forays into the possibilities of the cinema… It’s the work of a filmmaker with an exhaustive knowledge of movie history and a wanton desire to languish in it.” Greg DeLiso, Smug Film

WEDNESDAY 15 APRIL @ 7PM

THE STUNT MAN TICKET PRICE: £2 USA.1980. Director: Richard Rush. Cast: Peter O’Toole, Steve Railsback, Barbara Hershey. Duration: 2hrs.11mins. Cert: 15.

The Stunt Man is told from the perspective of Cameron (Steve Railsback), a Vietnam vet on the run from the law. He stumbles onto the set of a WWI movie and accidentally kills a stunt driver. The director of the movie is the eccentric and megalomaniacal Eli Cross (Peter O’Toole, in one of his best ever performances), who takes Cameron under his wing and protects him from John Law, as long as he keeps his mouth shut about the accident.

Cameron practices to be a stunt artist and takes the place of the man he killed. But as the movie shoot becomes more elaborate and dangerous, he falls in love with the leading lady (Barbara Hershey) and starts to suspect that Eli is trying to capture his death on film.

Winner of three Oscars®.

A subtle and probing journey into the darkness of “writer’s block”, Barton Fink delves into what lurks below people’s perceived character. The elation of overnight success often changes the recipient in surprising ways, although in the case of Barton Fink (John Turturro) all he’d like to do is escape the limelight and return to his muse. However, Hollywood beckons with some obscenely large paychecks, providing an alternative to the common folk who are Fink’s inspiration. He acquiesces but

compromises by booking into an offbeat hotel, hoping to maintain some contact with ordinary people in the largely alien Los Angeles.

ED WOOD TICKET PRICE: £2 USA.1994. Director: Tim Burton. Cast: Johnny Depp, Martin Landau, Sarah Jessica Parker, Patricia Arquette, Bill Murray. Duration: 2hrs.7mins. Cert: 15.

The significance of Ed Wood, both man and movie, on the career of Tim Burton cannot be emphasised enough. Here Burton regurgitates and pays homage to the influences of his youth, just as he would continue to do with Mars Attacks! and Sleepy Hollow. Everything is just right, from the decision to shoot in black and white, the performances of Johnny Depp (as Ed) and Martin Landau (as Bela Lugosi), the re-creation of 1950’s Hollywood and the evocative score by Howard Shore (Lord of the Rings). The plot struck a poignant familiar chord with Burton, who saw the relationship between Ed and Lugosi mirroring his own with Vincent Price. Most importantly Burton responded to the story of the struggling, misunderstood artist.

THE PLAYER TICKET PRICE: £2 USA.1992. Director: Robert Altman. Cast: Tim Robbins, Greta Scacchi, Fred Ward, Peter Gallagher, Vincent D’Onofrio, Whoopi Goldberg. Duration: 2hrs.4mins. Cert: 15.

Egocentric movie studio executive Griffin Mill’s (Tim Robbins) life is starting to seem like a movie in itself. Word around Hollywood is that he is about to be replaced by young hotshot Larry Levy (Peter Gallagher), and to make matters worse, Griffin has just accidentally murdered innocent screenwriter David Kahane (Vincent D’Onofrio) after accusing Kahane of sending him malicious postcards, and the police are on to him. Aside from all of this, Griffin has to survive in the shallow yet glamorous world of Hollywood, in which stars hag out on every corner and movies are made as long as the pitch can be condensed to 25 words or less, and the endings are happy.

Nominated for three Oscars®.

The biography of Charlie Chaplin, filmmaker extraordinaire. From his formative years in England to his highest successes in America, Charlie’s life, work and loves are followed. He was perfectly willing to spend hours or days on one shot or gag until he had it exactly right. He won his fame by reinventing himself as a universal character: before Batman, before Mickey

Mouse, there was the Little Tramp, an everyman whose lack of name and address allowed him to go anywhere and do anything, as long as it was funny or brought a tear. While his screen characters were extremely hilarious, the man behind “The Little Tramp” was constantly haunted by a sense of loss.

BOOGIE NIGHTS TICKET PRICE: £2 USA.1997. Director: Paul Thomas Anderson. Cast: Mark Wahlberg, Julianne Moore, Burt Reynolds. Duration: 2hrs.35mins. Cert:18.

Charting the rise and fall of well-endowed teenage ingénu Dirk Diggler (Wahlberg), from dishwasher to subcultural skin flick superstar, and back to washed-out junkie, the film is less a cautionary tale than a freewheeling, talent-showcasing homage to the glitter, tack and kitsch excesses of the drug-fuelled late ‘70s and the hangover ‘80s.

Nominated for three Oscars®.

1950’s Los Angeles is the seedy backdrop for this intricate noir-ish tale of police corruption and Hollywood sleaze. Three very different cops are all after the truth, each in their own style: Ed Exley, the golden boy of the police force, willing to do almost anything to get ahead, except sell out; Bud White, ready to break the rules to seek justice, but barely able to keep his raging violence under control; and Jack Vincennes, always looking for celebrity and a quick buck until his conscience drives him to join Exley and White down the one-way path to find the truth behind the dark world of L.A. crime.

Looking after Whale is his loyal housekeeper Hannah (Redgrave). His solitary existence is then disrupted by two events: a visit from a curious film student who wants to find out more about the golden age of Hollywood; and the arrival of Clayton Boone (Brendan Fraser), the new gardener.

As Whale discovers the new employee, he is extremely interested in the young man, while Boone is also curious about Whale. The two men forge an unlikely friendship that will prove to test the boundaries and limits of any relationship.

“McKellen gives the performance of his film career as the gay British director James Whale - the man who made Frankenstein - and Brendan Fraser excels as Clayton Boone, the straight gardener who encourages Whale as a painter by posing nude.” Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

WAG THE DOG TICKET PRICE: £2 USA.1997. Director: Barry Levinson. Cast: Dustin Hoffman, Robert DeNiro, Anne Heche, Denis Leary, Willie Nelson, Kirsten Dunst. Duration: 1hr.37mins. Cert: 15.

Hoffman displays his suave cynicism as a hot shot Hollywood producer who is called upon by Robert DeNiro’s omnipotent Presidential spin-doctor to squelch a potentially ugly public relations backlash on the eve of re-election. It turns out that the President got caught in a girl scout’s panties and now with his popularity falling, his shoe-in, second term is in jeopardy. To divert the public’s attention and to angle the President back into the White House, DeNiro and Hoffman hatch a plot to stage a fake war with Albania. “Change the story, change the lead” is the motto. After all politics is show business anyway - right?

Nominated for two Oscars®.

As Charlie struggles to adapt Orlean’s best-selling book “The Orchid Thief”, he writes himself into his own movie. The various stories crash into one another exploding into a wildly imaginative film. MAPS TO THE STARS TICKET PRICE: £2 Canada/USA/Germany/France.2014. Director: David Cronenberg. Cast: Julianne Moore, Mia Wasilkowska, Robert Pattinson, John Cusack, Evan Bird, Olivia Williams. Duration: 1hr.51mins. Cert: 18.

The Weiss family is the archetypical Hollywood dynasty: father Stafford is an analyst and coach, who has made a fortune with his self-help manuals; mother Cristina mostly looks after the career of their son Benjie, 13, a child star. One of Stafford’s clients, Havana, is an actress who dreams of shooting a remake of the movie that made her mother, Clarice, a star in the ‘60s. Clarice is dead now and visions of her come to haunt Havana at night... Adding to the toxic mix, Benjie has just come off a rehab program he joined when he was nine and his sister, Agatha, has recently been released from a sanatorium where she was treated for criminal pyromania and befriended limo driver Jerome who is also an aspiring actor.

Nominated for a Golden Globe.

“It seems strange that it’s taken David Cronenberg this long to shoot a movie in Los Angeles - or, for that matter, America… Maps To The Stars not only lands him in the heart of Hollywood, it sees him drive a great big stake through it.
