2.1 RiskofDamagingyourHearingTheTRAKTORAUDIO 10,incombinationwithanamplifier,headphonesorspeakers,canproducesoundsindecibelrangesthatmaycausehearingdamage.Foryourprotection,setallvolumelevelstoaminimumbeforeusingTRAKTORAUDIO 10.Graduallyraisethevolume controls while music is playing to set the desired listening level. 3 InstallationIn orderfortheTRAKTORAUDIO 10toworkproperlywithyourcomputer,thefollowingtwo programs are automatically installed on your system during the software installation process:

• TheTRAKTORAUDIO 10driver.Thishandlesthecommunicationbetweentheaudiointerface and your computer.

• The Control Panel software: • InWindows®,theControlPanelsoftwareallowsyoutoadjustperformanceset-

tings,preampsettings,toperformdiagnostics,andtoconfigurethesoundcard’sport settings.

• InMacOS® X,theperformancesettingsandpreampsettingsarecontrolledfromthesystem’sAudioMIDIsetup,locatedintheUtilitiesfolder.Theportconfigurationagain is accessed through the Control Panel software.

!%IfyouarefamiliarwiththeinstallationprocedureandthegeneralconfigurationofUSB-drivenaudiodevicesonyourcomputer,youcanskipthischapterandcontinuewithregistrationchapter10.

3.3 ConnectingtheHardwareBeforeconnectingthehardware,makesureyouhaveinstalledallsoftwarecomponentsasdescribedinchapter3.2.Onceyouhaveinstalledthesoftware:

1. Insertthefixtureofthematchingadapterplugintothecorrespondingpartonthepowersupply,thenpresstheadapterplugcarefullyagainstthepowersupplyuntilaclickconfirmstheadapterplughassnappedintoplace.

2. Connect the power supply to a power outlet.

3. Connecttheplugattheendofthepowersupply’scabletothepowersupplyconnectorontherearpanelofyourTA10.

4. ConnecttheTA10toaUSB2.0portonyourcomputerusingtheUSBcableincludedin the package.

→ Afterconnectingthesoundcardtoyourcomputer,theUSBdriverswillbeinstalledonyourcomputerautomaticallyandtheTRAKTORAUDIO 10soundcardshouldbereadytousestraightaway.Proceedwithregistrationchapter3.4.ForWindows®XP,seeseparatesectionbelow.

XPUsersOnly:CompletingtheDeviceDriverInstallationUpondetectionofthenewhardware,Windows®completesthedevicedriverinstallation:

1. Windows®XPwillidentifytheTRAKTORAUDIO 10soundcard.ChooseNo if Win-dows®asksyoutosearchtheinternetforadriver.

2. Duringdevicedriverinstallation,aWindows®messagemaycallattentiontothefactthattheTRAKTORAUDIO 10driverhasnotpassedWindows®LogoTesting.Thisisanexpectedbehavioranddoesnotindicateaproblem.Toproceed,clickContinue Anyway.

→ Yourcomputerwilldisplaya“New Hardware found”message.Subsequently,anothermes-sage reading “Your devices are ready to use” will notify you that the device driver installation was completed successfully.

▶ Afteryouhavecompletedthedriverinstallationprocedure,thedriverinstallerwillstartagain.Thisisintendedbehavior.Repeatthepreviousstepsinordertoinstallallrequired driver components.

→ Allsoftwarecomponentsarenowinstalled,andtheTRAKTORAUDIO 10shouldbereadytouse.Proceedwithregistrationchapter3.4.

3.4 RegistrationRegisteringtheTRAKTORAUDIO 10isnotmandatory.Nevertheless,registrationisrecom-mendedforsupportinquiriesorincaseoftheft.Asaregistereduser,youwillalsobenefitfrom exclusive incentives and insider specials.

4 BasicConfigurationIn orderfortheTRAKTORAUDIO 10tooperateasyourcomputer’sdefaultaudiooutputdevice,youwillneedtoselectitwithinthesystem’saudiopreferences.Findtherelevantinstructionsinchapter4.1.

ForinformationonusingtheTRAKTORAUDIO 10asyourmusicsoftware’sdefaultaudiooutputdevice,seechapter4.2.

4.1 SelectingtheTRAKTORAUDIO 10asYourSystem’sDefaultAudioOutputDevice

Inthefollowingsections,youwilllearnhowtosetuptheTRAKTORAUDIO 10asyourcomputer’sdefaultaudiooutputdevice.

4.1.1 Windows®XP

1. Open Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound.

2. In the Sounds and Audio Devices Propertieswindow,selecttheAudiotab.

3. From the Default Devicedrop-downlistofoptions,selectTRAKTORAUDIO 10.

4. Click OKtoconfirmyourselectionandclosethewindow.

→ TRAKTORAUDIO 10isnowselectedasthedefaultaudiooutputdevice.

4.1.2 Windows®Vista®,Windows®7

1. Open Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound.

2. In the Soundcontrolpanel,selectthePlaybacktab.

3. ChoosefromoneofTRAKTORAUDIO 10’spairofoutputs(ChA,Out1|2orChB,Out3|4)thatyouwanttosetasdefaultbyclickingthecorrespondingentry.

4. Click Set Default.

5. Click OKtoconfirmyourselectionandclosethewindow.

→ TRAKTORAUDIO 10isnowselectedasthedefaultaudiooutputdevice.

4.1.3 MacOS® X

1. Open the System Preferences under the gray Apple Icon menu in the top left corner of your screen.

2. In the Hardwarecategory(secondrowfromtop),selectSound.

3. In the Soundcontrolpanel,selecttheOutputtab.

4. ChooseTRAKTORAUDIO 10fromthelistofavailablesoundcards.

5. Close the panel.

→ TRAKTORAUDIO 10isnowselectedasthedefaultaudiooutputdevice.

4.2 UsingtheTRAKTORAUDIO 10asanAudioOutputDevicewithMusic Software

BeforeusingtheTRAKTORAUDIO 10withmusicproductionorDJsoftware,youwillneedtosetitupasthesoftware’saudiooutputdevice.MostmusicproductionandDJprogramsprovide direct access to the soundcard properties in the audio and MIDI setup section of theirpreferencesdialog.PleaserefertothedocumentationofyourmusicproductionorDJsoftwareforinformationonhowtoconfigureaudioandMIDIinterfaces.

4.3 UsingtheTRAKTORAUDIO 10withDJSoftwareForinstructionsonhowtoutilizeTRAKTORDJsoftwareformixingpurposeswithadedi-catedhardwareaudiointerface,pleaseseethedocumentationofyourTRAKTORsoftware.

FortheTRAKTORAUDIO 10toworkinadigitalDJingcontext(withtimecodemedia),itisimportantthattheinputchannelsontherelevantportsaresetupforreceivingtimecode,i.e.,THRUmodeisdeactivatedandthechannelsaresettoPHONOorLINE,dependingonwhetheryouusetimecodevinylorCDdeckssendingtimecode.Seechapter6.1.2/6.2.1forinstructionsonhowtoconfiguretheportsettings.Seechapter7.2forinstructionsonhowtosetuptheTA10toworkwithDJsoftware.

5 The Hardware in DetailThe TRAKTORAUDIO 10isasoundcardforprocessingincomingaudioandsendingaudiotoyourcomputerandotherexternalequipment,bothinanaloganddigitalform.

GearedforDJuse,theTA10involvestheuseofturntables,CDdecksandotherlineleveldevices,andMIDIinstruments.TurntablesandCDdeckscaneitherbeusedforanalogplaybackorforusewithtimecodevinyls/CDstocontrolaudiofilesinaDJingsoftware.Withtheflexibleportconfigurationoptions,youcanevensetupacombinationofanaloganddigitalDJing.Seechapter6.1.2/6.2.1forinstructionsonhowtoconfiguretheportsettingswiththeControlPanelsoftware,whichwasinstalledduringtheTA10softwareinstallation procedure.

ThefollowingarethekeyfeaturesoftheTRAKTORAUDIO 10:

• soundconversion(fromanalogtodigitalandviceversa)

• playback/monitoring(fromaninputdeviceorcomputertoheadphones/speakers)

5.1 Front Panel

5.1ThefrontpaneloftheTRAKTORAUDIO 10.

• (1)MICandMAININ/OUT: • Ontheleftsideofthefrontpanel,thereisa1/4”MICinputsocket,typicallyutilized

byadynamicmicrophonewitha1/4”jack.NotethatusingtheMICINinputdis-ablestheMAININinput,andviceversa,soyoucannotusebothatthesametime.

• The GAINknob controls the gain level of the MIC IN. • The MAININ/OUT inputandoutputchannelsnexttotheGAINknobareunbalanced

!%Whenconvertingaudioinformationtodigitalandviceversa,theaudiodriverneedstostorethedatainbufferpackages(audiobuffers),whicharethensenttoandprocessedbytheCPU.Thehigherthebuffersize,thelongerittakesforasignaltofinallyarriveattheoutputasaudio.Youmightexperiencethisasadelaybetweenthetimeyouhitakey on your computer or controller and when you actually hear the sound. This delay is calledlatency.Aruleofthumb:loweringbuffersizeresultsinlowerlatency.However,therearemorefactorstolatencythanbuffersizealone(e.g.,CPUspeedandRAMsize).Startoffwithahigherbuffersizesettingandgraduallydecreasethevalueuntilyoufindtheperfectbalancebetweenaudioqualityandsystemperformance.Ifyouexperiencecracklingattheaudiooutput,thechosenbuffersizeisverylikelytoolowforyourcom-puter’sCPUtohandleconsideringthatalowerbuffersizecauseshigherCPUload.

Device Monitor Section

• Format:Chooseasampleratethatiscompatiblewithyourmusicapplicationandsuitedtoyourcomputingpower.Ahighersamplerateimprovestheaudioqualitybutalsocauses higher CPU load.

!%Thesampleratedefineshowmanysamplesareplayed/recordedperonesecondofsound.Ahighersamplerateresultsinhigheraudioquality;however,44100 Hz(asusedforrecordingaudioCDs)isacommonsettingandabsolutelysufficientformosttasks.IfyourfinaldestinationisCD,usethissettingoramultipleofit(88200 Hz).Forabet-terunderstanding:48000 HzisusedbyDATrecordersandforDVD(films)recording.96000 HzandhigherratesaretypicalforDVD,HDDVD,andBlu-rayDiscaudiorecord-ing. There you willfindthehelperapplicationControlPanel.MakesurethatthedeviceisconnectedtothecomputerandopentheControlPanel.Ifallthemenusandoptionsaregrayedout(e.g.,therearenosampleratevaluestochoosefrom)theremustbesomethingwrongwiththeconnection. If the TRAKTOR AUDIO 10 Driver entry in the Native Instruments folder of the StartMenuismissing,thedriverismostprobablynotinstalled.

• Ifthedriverisnotinstalled,youcaninstallitasdescribedinchapter2.

• Ifthedriverisnotrecognized,checkyourUSB2.0connectionasdescribedinchapter8.3.

• AsanyotherUSBdevice,thedriverinstallsexactlyforoneUSBport.IfyouconnecttheTRAKTORAUDIO 10toanotherport,astandardWindows®dialogopensinwhichyou can install the driver to that port. 10.1 About Latency and BuffersWhenconvertingaudioinformationtodigitalandviceversa,theaudiodriverneedstostorethedatainbufferpackages(audiobuffers)whicharethensenttoandprocessedbytheCPUofyourcomputer.Thehigherthebuffersize,thelongerittakesforasignaltofinallyarriveattheoutputasaudio.Youmightexperiencethisaslateresponsebetweenhittingakey on a controller which controls music software on your computer and hearing the sound attheoutput.Fortunately,withtoday’scomputersandlow-latencysoundcarddrivers,thisdelayisusuallyverylow(e.g.,threemillisecondsisaboutthesamedelaycausedbyfingerssnappingonemeterawayfromyourears).LatencymustbekeptatminimuminordertomakesoftwareinstrumentsandDJapplicationsplayable.
