About the Author
Introduction
Did you know that: “North America Internet Users account for only 11.4% of the total Internet
Population?” – According to internetworldstats.com, June 2012.
An Internet story with a happy ending
10 years ago while I was enjoying my summer holidays in Santorin – Greece and between the sun,
the sand and the sea I decided to get actively involved with the Internet and explore the possibilities
this new area or better era could offer to young and enthusiastic IT professionals. For sure it was an
exciting experience much more than it is now, but besides excitement I was also looking for ways to
create a sustainable income on-line.
What I wanted was a job where I could work on-line, from home, do whatever I wanted without
having a boss or a timetable and make enough money to make a living! Everybody with whom I
discussed my dream called me crazy but after 2006 (this was the point where I realized the potential
of Google AdSense) my dream started becoming real and a few years later I have finally managed to
turn my dream into a fulfilled goal.
It was not easy, in fact it was a journey filled with more failures than successes. Many times I deleted
everything and started from the beginning either because what I was doing did not generate any
outcome or because Google was destroying my efforts. Despite my academic background it took me
many years to understand how search engines work, what the real Internet Marketing is and how to
build a successful web site without taking any risks.
The problem with working online is that there is too much and too conflicting information on what
works and what does not work in the Internet and if you don’t know from where to start and who to
trust, you will get lost in a vicious circle without exit. It happened to me as well and I know the
disappointment of seeing the endless hours spend in front of your computer producing zero return.
At those times I was anxiously looking for someone to tell me what I was doing wrong and what I
should do to get traffic and make something out of my online work.
Unfortunately for me I had to learn the hard way by trial and error but fortunately you do not have
to go this path. The objective of this book is to explain everything you need to know about creating a
successful web site or blog. Unlike other books or products, I won’t bother you with theories,
imaginary web sites or fake scenarios but will show you REAL case studies, REAL examples from REAL
web sites I have created over the years that generate both traffic and money.
You have already made the first step and your Internet success is only 8 chapters away!

It is real. Everything I explain is from REAL examples

It’s not too good to be true. I am not promising results with no work but I’m promising great
results with a lot of work.
It’s for you. I have been in your shoes for many years, I know your questions, your difficulties, I
know what you are doing wrong and I am here to give you answers.
Chapter 1 – The caloriesecrets.net case study
The whole book is evolving around caloriesecrets.net. Despite the fact that in some cases I also
demonstrate examples from other web sites (mine or client web sites) the focus is on
caloriesecrets.net
Brief History
Caloriesecrets.net launched in April 2012 in the very competitive niche of weight loss, dieting and
fitness. My experience with the particular niche goes back to 2008 and I can re-assure you that it is
one of the most complicated and saturated areas on the web today. Despite the difficulties, I
decided to start a new web site and follow my already established Internet Marketing strategy to
prove once more that my methods are safe and above all they work.
One year after the initial launch I can say that the results are over and above my initial expectations.
Traffic is growing steadily and has passed the 150,000 monthly unique visits, the social acceptance of
the site is increasing day by day and the number of loyal readers is at surprisingly high levels.
What is worth mentioning is that 60% of the traffic is coming from search engines with Google to
bring in around 3000 unique visits per day.
In terms of content, caloriesecrets.net has 170 published articles and around 5000 incoming links (all
of them are natural links – I am NOT using any link building tools and this book is not about
generating artificial links to gain rankings and traffic).
The web site is based on the Wordpress platform, is wearing the Thesis theme and it is monetized
using Google Adsense. Currently it is hosted on a VPS (Virtual Private Server).
The android application that accompanies the web site has more than 150,000 downloads. You can
download it for free here.
How is the case study related to this book?
As I have said above this book will explain step-by-step how caloriesecrets.net was developed from
Day 1, what tools and techniques I have used so that after one year it attracts more than 150,000
unique visits per month and more than 3000+ organic visits per day in one of the most competitive
niches.
Learning Objectives Achieved
If you have a solid and proven Internet Marketing plan and the right tools you can make
both traffic and money on the Internet even in a difficult year as 2013.
Chapter 2 – Lifecycle of a web property
Introduction
Did you know that: “The total number of web searches per month in the U.S only is estimated to
11 Billion!” – According to Gallup, June 2012.
Whenever I create a new web site or blog I always follow the same path or lifecycle. It is important
to have a plan before getting into the implementation stage since a good plan will bring faster
results. Nevertheless, if you already have a web site or blog up and running you can still use the
below framework to improve your web site, fix any issues and plan your future steps.
Planning a new web site
Before the implementation
Decide on the domain name to use. As a rule of thumb, avoid keyword stuffed domains i.e.
howtoloseweight.com but try to find a domain that is catchy and if possible no more than 2 words.
Prefer to go with a .com or .net extension.
Think and have clear in your mind the purpose of your new web site or blog. “I want to create a
new web site, get high rankings and make money with AdSense” is NOT a valid goal! How do you
plan to distinguish your web site from the rest? Is it the quality of your content? Are you going to
offer any free services? Spend a few days searching the net, analysing your to-be competitors and
decide what will make your web site stand out of the crowd.
In the case of caloriesecrets.net I have used what I think it’s a catchy domain, it’s not keyword stuffed
but one can tell immediately from the domain name what the web site is all about.
The site’s purpose was to provide top quality content from experts and offer several free services to
our readers. In particular there is a free calorie counter application, a free diet plan (written by a
team of nutritionist specifically for caloriesecrets) and a free BMR calculator that is easy to use.
All content is based on research evidence and as I already said it is written by certified dieticians or
fitness experts (with the exception of a couple of articles I have personally written from my
experience so many years in this niche).
So, how is caloriesecrets different from other similar web sites? Top quality content, free tools and
services, available in other markets besides the web (mobile markets).
Implementation Stage
Setup Web site -Register domain, install Wordpress (or other blogging software)
Define the structure of the web site (categories, essential pages etc.)
SEO your home page and setup (set url structure etc.)
Do keyword research and decide on what to write about
Start promoting your content
Install and configure Google Analytics and webmaster tools
Socialize your web site (create your Facebook page, twitter, Google+, Pinterest etc.)
Try to find alternative traffic sources (besides search engine traffic)
I will go deeper into each and every stage besides the first part (Setup Web site). I assume that you
already have or can setup a website or blog. If this is not the case you can do a bit of research in
Google and find a number of how-to articles that can teach you exactly that. It is not very difficult to
do and even a novice or beginner Internet user can do it.
Learning Objectives Achieved
What is important at this stage is to spend some time to do your planning (if it’s a new web
site) or to re-evaluate your web site’s purpose if it already exists. Try to think out-of-the-box
and don’t assume that you will have to do everything yourself. As we will see in Chapter 4
there are ways to outsource work you cannot do either because you don’t have the
necessary skills or because someone else will do it better than you.
